Traditional Homes - SWOTHA
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 12, 2013

We really enjoyed our stay at Traditional Homes. The quality of the linens and big comfy bed were certainly appreciated following our travels round Nepal. The rooms are somehow modern and traditional at the same time, and feel light and airy. There is some noise early in the morning, but in a good way, you hear the neighbours waking up, and hear the sound of the temple bells being rung. The attached cafe has the best breakfast too, and is worth visiting for lunch and dinner as the food is prepared with the same care and attention you see in the guesthouse, and has the same comfortable feeling. Patan is a much more relaxed place to stay than the chaos of Thamel and it is really nice to hang out on the Durbar square at dusk and watch the world go by. If you are staying for more than one day, say so when you purchase your Durbar Square ticket to get it validated.

It was an honor to be able to stay at Traditional Homes Swotha and was, by far, the best hotel we stayed at in all of Nepal or India (and frankly, the best hotel outside of Europe or America I've at which ever stayed, in the 25 countries I've traveled through in the past 10 years). If you have an opportunity to stay here, by all means, DO.

The cleanliness is impeccable, the staff are the friendliest, the food is INCREDIBLE (try the cheesecake!). It was such a welcome respite from the normal dreary, slightly dingy hotels we had become accustomed to on our travels throughout India and Nepal. While Traditional Homes Swotha is a bit more expensive than the average hotel, it's well worth the splurge. The decor is absolutely stunning and very tasteful. It's also only a few short steps from Durbar Square in Patan, which is a magical area (sidenote: if you're wondering whether you should find a hotel in Kathmandu vs. Patan, stay in Patan at THS, it'll be much more enjoyable!).

Furthermore, Traditional Homes Swotha embraces the philosophy of locally-sourced, sustainable foods products (soap, shampoo, etc). If there's a way to make a hotel more environmentally friendly, THS has thought of it.

We thank the hotel and its staff so much for making our experience in Kathmandu (and of course Patan!) infinitely more enjoyable than it would have been elsewhere! I can't wait to come back soon!

Room Tip: There are two varieties of rooms, traditional and attic. The latter is more expensive, but perhaps...

Very good hotel in a traditional style, very friendly and helpfull people and VERY good cook!

It's just a little bit "down"about the cellings if you're tall as my husband, but really a good place where you could eat a really valuable breackfast and even taste indian wines and cocktails !!

Room Tip: If you're taller than 6 feet, choose the attic room, the only one with a high celling....

We loved Traditional Homes SWOTHA so much we returned at the end of our trip to stay again! The staff are wonderful, the rooms are beautiful, the food is delicious and the location is perfect if you're looking for a quiet place very close to historical monuments and a great shopping district. We highly recommend this accommodation!

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice but the attic room is definitely worth the extra dollars if you want to treat...

This hotel is so beautiful we did not want to leave our room even though the amazing Patan Durbar square is crawling distance from here. The staff are excellent, the rooms immaculate and very comfortable. They went out of their way to make up an extra bed for our daughter while we grabbed a bite to eat. The beautiful architectural details make each window, doorway or balcony a delight.

Room Tip: If you are tall you may want to specify one of the rooms with a higher ceiling as the structure in t...

A beautifully restored property complete with clean, spacious, comfortable rooms located just a stone's throw away from Patan's historical Durbar Square. After a 10 day trek, the warm comfortable welcome and excellent food of Traditional Homes Swota made for the perfect end to our stay in Nepal. A far more tranquil experience than you'll find on the busy streets of central Kathmandu, yet still well located for enjoying all the sights of the valley.

Imagine yourself in crowded Kathmandu, so much to see, to hear, to feel, to taste, to experience...., there where you cross Durbar Square and when you go the right into an alley, you will meet... Swotha. So quiet and almost noiseless. It is a traditional home as promissed and the staff is really helpfull and friendly. We stayed for a week to explore the surroundings of Kathmandu and this B&B was the best base we could have imagined.
The only minor critiquel point is the barking dog at night.
