“Fantastic rooms, but the real stand out is the FOOD!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

Amazing place! The rooms were sleek and minimalist, with beautiful beams on the (low) ceilings and other woodwork which gave the room character. Attention was paid to even the small details like the tiny, handmade soap and books on Nepalese history next to the bed. Piping hot shower! The owner is exceptionally friendly and also runs the small but impressive cafe below. NOT the traditional fare which is found everywhere else and is often geared to tourists. The menu is limited but every dish is delicious (we ate there practically every meal because we wanted to try everything!). Ingredients are locally sourced and you can actually get a decent wine. This restaurant would not be out of place in NYC...it is definitely up to that standard. Even if you don't stay here, you should eat here.

Our Nepali friend walked into Swotha and immediately said it was very authentic. This boutique hotel is such a gem in Patan City. Located 2 minutes from Patan Durbar Square, it is down a quiet alley so you don't get the honks and traffic noise. The rooms are cold in November but very cosy and spacious. Beams hang very low so the tall ones beware. The bed is comfy and the sheets are amazingly soft. Because it relies on Solar heated hot water, the shower trickles and is very cold especially in the mornings so often we didn't bath until late in the day. But other than that the stay was amazing. Not the cheapest place to stay but the experience is well worth it. Food here is great as well.

I totally agree with all the other comments about SWOTHA, the simple, stylish decor, the gentle welcoming staff and the great food. We stayed in the top floor room, which had a low but panoramic view of patan. This was a lovely tranquil place until the poor animal chained to the fence opposite started to bark. This we found very distressing, as he was clearly badly treated and was in an environment unsuitable for such an animal. I understand this is not the western world and animals are not used for love and companionship, however I believe this needs to be addressed. Sorry Camille, it was clear this also upsets you too.

We are sincerely sorry if Pintu (the name of this dear Dog) disturbed your stay at Traditional Homes- Swotha. He is indeed a bit noisy but has made a lot of progress recently. Since we addressed the issue with our neighbour and did a little bit of 'dog pedagogy' they do not chain him anymore and play with it... thus making him much quieter and happier.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in Asia,
Warm regards,
Camille

We could not recommend Swotha more highly. We had planned to stay in Patan, and thanks to Swotha, had the most wonderful stay. The building, room, location and friendly staff were all instrumental in making this part of our trip a highlight. Each morning we really looked forward to a lovely breakfast in the sunny dining room - and the coffee was excellent too!
Nothing was too much trouble for Camille and the team. Lucinda R

The superb reviews of Traditional Homes Swotha are spot on. Authentic Newari architecture, warm staff, and lovely accommodations created the Nepal experience we dreamed of. We stayed at Swotha for ten days in October for our son's wedding. Originally choosen because of it's proximity to the brides family's home in Patan, it was our good fortune to choose a local treasure. The architecture, decor, thoughtful amenities, beautiful beams and reclaimed woods, and luxurious bedding are extraordinary. Our room was second floor, with an airy view, and huge porch overlooking trees and a garden.
Swotha is in the center of a historical district in Patan Kathmandu, with Durbar Square less than a block away. We always slept with windows open and soft breeze fluttering. The mornings came with total silence, then birds chirping, a soft bell and prayer/chant from Durbar square, and the city slowly became alive. Our room was very quiet, no common walls and no overhead noise. The neighborhood is safe with friendly people and authentic Nepali charm. And the food! Breakfast was terrific with the breakfast area doubling as a cafe/bistro, serving western meals with beer, wine, cocktails. The pasta tagliatelle was excellent and difficult to explain how the best cheesecake we've ever had in the world was in Kathmandu, Nepal. Camille, the proprietor, is a charmer and goes beyond expectations to please. She's quietly available, and with her warm, bubbly personality she and Jimmy are your new best friends in Nepal. She went out of her way to provide us the best experience including walking blocks to find us a tour guide at a good price.
Her staff is the same, friendly, helpful thoughtful always striving to please. When we asked for a softer mattress it was waiting, bed made when we returned from an outing. When I laughed about my inability to drape a wedding sari on myself, one of the staff unexpectedly brought her mother over to help.
We walked everywhere, meandered about the quiet neighborhoods, and even walked into the downtown area of Kathmandu from Swotha.
As a warning, many visitors to Kathmandu choose the Thamel district unknowingly as that is where most of the tourist hotels are located. Fortunately we were warned against staying there. Thamel is a seedy part of Kathmandu, with drugs, crime and chaos. We happened to drive through Thamel quite by accident and grateful we were warned.

Traditional Homes Swotha is like staying in your chic friend's home in Nepal. When we return it is the only place we would consider. We'll never forget your lovely B&B Camille. Thank you so much.

Room Tip: We're age 60+ years and appreciated the first floor room with huge porch. The fourth floor studio...

My husband and I are our 2 kids stayed at SWOTHA in October as we attended a friend's wedding in KTM. Our trip included 4 countries and seven different hotels. My 10-year old son still says "My favorite place we stayed on the whole trip was SWOTHA!" The staff is amazing. Camille, Ram, Ram and Saroj made us feel like members of the family during our week there. Camille helped us navigate the city, advised us on what was reasonable to pay for taxi rides, and shared her favorite eating and shopping spots with us. The food at the cafe is fantastic. Breakfast is generous and delicious. The dinners include homemade pasta and "the best cheesecake in KTM!" The guesthouse is located 1/2 block from Durbar Square which is part of the Unesco KTM Momument World Heritage site. It's just an amazing area. If you have questions, email Camille and she'll get back to you. If you're tall, try to get the attic room. We wouldn't have traded our experience at SWOTHA for anything! (We miss you guys!)

Room Tip: The guesthouse is an actual Newari home, so the ceilings are kind of low. If you are tall, book the...

This hotel was beautifully decorated. As a traveler, I appreciate the attempt in saving an old building close to a historic area. This kind of action helps the growth and maintenance of any historic area. The location is great to the Patan Durbar square. One thing that was unexpected, was the help the owner Camille has provided us. Our hotel in our next destination in Chitwan cancelled our reservation less than 36 hours before our arrival to Chitwan. We got the cancallation email while getting ready to fly to Kathmandu. There was just not enough time to try to rebook a place in Chitwan and it was high season also. Right before we got on the plane to Kathmandu, our of desperation I emailed Camille the owner to see if she could help us. She did more than help us. She found out the reason why the hotel in Chitwan cancelled on us, and she called many other hotels around Chitwan to see if they have available rooms for us. She provided us wonderful help. It is more than any traveler can ask for. I urge fellow travelers to consider staying in this hotel for it offers authenicity, attempts to save an old beautiful building from falling into ruin and truly cares for its travelers.
