“Excellent location, beautiful roof terrace with Golden Temple views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2013

We stayed just one night at Hira Guest House but we were fascinated by its location next to Golden Temple and just few steps from Patan Durbar Square as well as by the house itself and its welcoming and helpfull staff.
It´s an old Newari building with low ceilings as it was already mentioned, but the rooms were reallly nice decorated, quite spacious for two of us and really clean. We enjoyed our breakfast at the roof terrace enjoying the food and the morning prayers in nearby Golden Temple.
At the check-in we got everything explained by the manager -the history of the building, the service and the things to do and to see nearby. In the evening we enjoyed his company while drinking our beers at roof terrace and it was interresting to learn this way more about the country and its people.
We would deffinitelly stay here again.

My husband and I stayed five nights at Hira Guest House, and found it a gem. The location on a tiny street by the Golden Temple and close to Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is excellent. We can only agree with the other positive reviews: staff is very helpful and friendly, rooms are beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean, the breakfast buffet is good and the two roof terraces overlooking the Golden Temple are terrific.

My girlfriend and I were recommended this guest house when the hotel we wished to stay in was fully booked. It was quite easy to find. If you go out the back of the Durbar square and see a shop called The Melting Pot (nice shop, merchandise and owner also). Turn left and head on straight. Straight over the little crossroads and then it's a little way on your right. We were greatly received by the manager here. Who explained all about the building and the comforts etc that out stay would include. The roof top terrace is a treat. With comfy chairs and a great view of the Golden Temple. The coffee is superb. As this is a traditional house. The ceilings are quite low on the first three floors. So be prepared to stoop unless you go to the top floor where the restaurant and roof top area is. The rooms are spacious and well presented. With very comfy large doubles. Plenty of storage and nice seating. Which is welcome after walking hunched over. There is hot water 24/7 in the large bathroom. Shower is good. Breakfast is served between 6 and 9am. Is quite basic. But Kim makes some mean toast and fried eggs. I'd give a score of 5 all round if it wasn't for the fact that the ceilings are low and it is a bit dusty in places. But they are a new business and are always welcome for their guests to make suggestions and help them improved. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Hira Guest House is an excellent choice for a base of operations while you're touring Kathmandu. The guest house itself is very central to the old city, a few minutes away from historic and ancient buildings and roads, and actually right next door to the Buddhist Golden Temple. Taxi's are fairly cheap in Kathmandu and there was usually one a few meters down the street, I probably road in 20+ during my two week stay.

The rooms are nice, very well cleaned and maintained. The building itself is very old world Nepal and the height of the rooms proves it. Some rooms are larger than others, though I think each is more than large enough for a party of two.

On the top floor there's a common area where breakfast is served every morning. The breakfast is simple and filling: toast, eggs, coffee and juice. The interior of the common area is nice, but the real gem of the location is the outside terrance. Overlooking the Golden Temple and a sizeable rooftop area of Kathmandu, this gorgeous little spot is open all day, and it's a great place to relax for a bit while coming back from a trip or waiting for friends.

The staff were friendly and very helpful. They had no problem flagging down a taxi for me, or bringing me an extra milk tea when required.

I'd recommend Hira to anyone looking to really experience Nepal, the people and the culture. You won't find a place to stay more ingrained in Kathmandu while keeping some of the comforts of the Western world.

Firstly, Hira guest house is in probably the nicest and most boutique area of Nepal (Patan) . When we arrived we were wowed by the rooms and the lovely big double bed! The rooms have been perfectly furnished and are a blend of traditional Nepali style with a modern contemporary feel. As it is a traditional building the ceiling height is low and you do bang your head a few times, this can be forgiven due to the charm of the place. The rooms were spotless and this continued throughout our stay when the rooms had been made up. The building is next door to a temple and a few nestling pigeons which did affect my sleep but the monks were there two hundred years before me so I forgave that! My partner slept fine so maybe only light sleepers could be affected. However the best thing about Hira guest house are the staff. They made us feel so welcome, Aman
and Esther were the perfect hosts and we became freinds rather than just guests before we left. The housekeeping lady is also lovely and really friendly. When we stayed it was Dasan and the town was basically shut and we had nowhere to eat, Esther and Aman invited us to share dinner with them which was so nice. It was one of the best evenings in our whole trip. We can not thank them enough for making our stay at Hira guest house perfect.

The Hira Guest House is a Gem. It was a big part of why my Nepal visit was so magical.

The Bells and morning chants/prayers remind you that you have a front row seat in the daily life of a 12th Century Buddhist Temple and you get all the best of Nepal in Patan without the Kathmandu crowds and traffic.

Interior decor is extremely clean and the staff (thanks Esther and Aman) are friendly and helpful. English language use is not a problem and the owners are brothers from Canada. As mentioned in other reviews, part of the profits from the Guest House go to helping Orphans - you may ask to visit the Orphanage and maybe make a donation? I did…

Although Patan is 20 minutes from downtown Kathmandu, it is one of the Three and dare I say the nicest of the UNESCO listed Durbar Squares. You also get to avoid the congestion and busyness of the main Squares and yet enjoy the walkability and proximity to the Golden Temple and rest of Patan's Durbar Square. You will not be disappointed.

Some might find the beds too firm, but that was okay for me. Ceilings (as mentioned) are a little low, I believe Room 6 has the tallest ceilings. But I defy you to find authentic accommodations without low ceilings - the people were shorter centuries ago.

Breakfast is well done with good western selection (eggs/meat/toast/cereal) all held on the Rooftop deck or inside area on top floor with awesome view of Golden Temple's inner courtyard (yes that is how close you are).

If you are seeking cleanliness and convenience in a truly authentic Nepalese experience, you cannot go far wrong with Hira Guest House. I stayed for 4 nights, but this would also be a convenient location to stay for one or more nights on the way out or back from Everest or other tours of Nepal. Pricing varies during high/low season so make sure to check around. Hira was good value...Good luck and happy travels!

When we arrived, there's a little hiccup in my booking that made my room was not ready, and I was a bit cranky. The manager quickly solved the problem, took us to another four-storeys building in the back of an alley that belongs to them as well, and housed us in the second floor - a lovely "suite" with a very quiet surrounding to get the perfect rest, yet just a mere minute walk to Golden Temple and Durbar Square. We love the heavy wood flooring, and we definitely were crazy about staying in a true Newari house - though it means low ceilings. Heating and plumbing may not be perfect, yet all the flaws are made tolerable with the beyond five-stars hospitality exercised by the whole friendly staff. In the morning we had breakfast on the rooftop terrace of the main house, right next to the golden pagoda of The Golden Temple, accompanied with the sound of morning rituals. A beautiful stay. And the fact that our stay also means giving back to the community through Mercy Works foundation in Nepal made our experience even more lovely.
