“Good coffee shop with a Western feel”
Reviewed April 2, 2012

If you're the kind of person who likes to hang around a coffee all day on your laptop or reading a book, this is the place for you. Free wifi and good good food. As with many coffee shops around Kathmandu, you can't get soy milk here so if you're lactose you'll have to stick to the espresso. As for veggoes, there isn't a huge cheese-free selection but the veg sandwich comes as a tripple-decker and is both filling and tasty. Soma is definitely a local (expat) staple and most people use it as a main landmark in the area - so even if you don't like coffee, it'll help to know where it is.

“Great little spot for reading newspapers and books ...”
Reviewed March 27, 2012

Cafe Soma is a short but dusty stroll from the humanitarian aid hub (the UN compound, German-Aid, etc.). Deffo worth a ramble as you pass a couple of quirky and wonderful shops along the way (one is a great little stationary store with a good collection of pens, notebooks, etc. - plus a couple of quirky items.

Cafe Soma itself is a fairly large and airy space with a table full of newspapers and magazines, plus a fair collection of fliers. They also have an enormous wall of books for sale, each one wrapped in plastic (I suspect to prevent casual browsers getting a free read over lunch!).

The fare is mostly of the tea/coffee & cakes variety and is excellent. They do put a lunch on, but I never partook. The cakes are great tough - we often ended-up bringing some home (they box and bag out-sales very nicely). One evening we brought home some lemon sponge thingys, which were just crying-out for a good dollop of custard!

I have to tell you that their call did not go unheard. Delicious.

The loo is outside and ok (by Nepalese standards).

A nice feature is the front porch, with attractively laid tables and comfy chairs.

Another plus is that they tend to open quite late, in a city that shuts down pretty early in general.

The staff are great - friendly and helpful, as the Nepalese tend to be. I am given to understand that the place is owned by an ex-pat - certainly it is geared to European tastes.

I would highly recommend this cafe to anybody visiting Nepal -- and I'd wager that it is a place you will return to over and over. We did.
