Just back from a great holiday at valparai. We decided on valparai after lot of thought process on where to go for our anniversary.
The main reason we were a little skeptical was the distance from bangalore but the drive was worth it.
We left bangalore around 5:30 am and reached pollachi by 12:30 pm.
Sujatha, our host followed up with us through out to ensure we did not miss our route.
We stopped at pollachi for lunch and left for valparai around 1:30 pm.
The distance is around 65kms and we stopped enroute at Aliyar dam. Nothing much to do there. The view is amazing but need not spend lot of time there.

We did lot of photo stops on our way to valparai and reach by 4:30 pm.
As soon as we reached the place we had our snacks and tea and settled down in our room.
Rest of the evening was spent admiring the beauty of the location.
As it was our anniv they had made a beautiful arrangement of candles and flowers with a cake.
They also made our dinner into special candle light dinner.

Next day early morning Muruguan (assigned to help us out while we were there) took us out for bird watching. we missed the malabar hornbill just by few mins.
We did manage to glimpse woodpecker, kingfisher, shrek and few other birds.
Back in the bunglow we had our breakfast which was a simple and delicious affair.
We freshened up and left for Nirar dam. Drive is very scenic and the dam location is also amazing.

Next day we left for athirapally again with Murugan and we got a packed lunch. drive was totally unique experience. We reached athirapally by 12:30 pm and it started raining heavily.
But still we managed to see the falls and had our lunch on the way back in the middle of the forest with Murugan taking up the role of butler. serving us a delicious lunch of lemon rice, curd rice, potato porial and kesari.

Do not miss the nigh safari as well, it will be your own vehicle but that adds to the excitement as you will be driving.

Murugan is very knowledgeable about local flora and fauna and a great companion to have with all his exciting stories of sightings.

Hospitality is at its best, food is very homely and tasty and rest of the staff are always pleasant and smiling.

Rooms are very bug and spacious. only thing i would have added is a bit of comfortable seating inside the room apart from just the bed. specially for those who would just like to laze around.

all in all a great vacation. Pics to follow soon

After hearing a lot from my friends about this place called "Valparai", I finally decided to go there. I just relied on Trip advisor’s reviews in selecting Sinna Dorai's Bungalow. The booking was smooth and locating the place was easy, Thanks to Sujatha for keeping touch regularly and guiding me to this place. As soon as we reached the Bungalow, I understood I didn’t make any mistake in choosing this place. Spacious clean rooms, misty surroundings and excellent service makes this place the best of the ones I have been to till date. One would take at least half a day to go thru every room and take a look the surroundings. I was spellbound by the service provided. I enjoyed being pampered and treated with utmost class. The food was fabulous. Be it the Italian soups or the south Indian varieties, they are simply mouthwatering. Special mention about the chef and his expertise in cooking various dishes right from soups to deserts. The table for every meal was set with perfection and with different crockery set every meal. I cannot restrain myself from appreciating Sujatha for maintaining the Bungalow exceptionally well and training the staff to give guests a complete colonial treatment. The location of the bungalow is very good. We have stayed for 2 nights and we didn’t want to move out of the bungalow premises except for a walk/trek in the adjacent tea estate. I would recommend people not to plan to go to any sightseeing nearby as this place is meant to relax by just enjoying the bungalow. Awesome place I would definitely want to visit again.

Room Tip: If preferring privacy, one can book the rooms situated below the main bangalow. But one needs to get...

After contemplating for two years, we finally visited this misty beautiful little tea town called Valparai. We drove up the hill and braved the 40 hair bend drives telephonically guided by Sujatha of Sinna dorai bungalows. When we finally reached the bungalow we slowly started falling in love with this place.
The bungalow is beautifully restored to the highest standards with classic touch. It is situated on top of the hill so the view is spectacular. Surrounded by beautiful garden of flowers and trees. The cottages are extremely comfortable with most modern facilities. It took me one full day to go thru every room of the bungalow to admire the beautiful paintings, restored furnitures, trophies etc. The library is stocked with pre-independence books, news papers and periodicals.
While sipping a hot cuppa and snacks during the lovely monsoon afternoon, I totally enjoyed reading and resting there, it was a bliss. The food was very fresh and hygenic, generally south-indian with many varieties. The table for every meal was set with perfection and with different crockery set every meal.
The staff in the bungalow are very well trained, extremely professional. Sujatha the caretaker/ manager - was very helpful, a pleasing personality. We had a marvelous three days trekking around, even had an encounter with a bison while trekking a hill, resting in beautiful hill side, just enjoying the bungalow.
When you go to Valparai and stay in this bungalow my advice is to just enjoy the surrounding, the bungalow and the weather. Do not go 'sight seeing' to the near by waterfalls etc which will kill your one full day. Just relax and enjoy the beautiful place and people !

It is not an easy place to get to, but totally worth the effort. We booked well before and correspondence with Sujatha was always prompt and courteous. She arranged for a driver to pick us up from Coimbatore and again take us through to Tirapur a few days later. On arrival we were offered iced tea, and soon after had a delicious cup of English style tea with home made biscuits. The property itself is breathtaking, and the accommodation and meals totally indulgent without being showy. The bungalows are beautifully equipped and spacious. The living areas of the main house are fascinating, and I enjoyed getting a feel for what it might have been like living there. All of the staff are simply efficient and friendly. I had my washing dried for me! The feel is one of peace and tranquility, and two days there does not do it justice. You really should relax there and unwind properly. Sujatha arranged for a visit to a tea factory, and the night safari was on offer as well. Food was plentiful and varied and delicious. The views of the tea plantations and the villages in the valleys both in the day and at night are splendid.

After lot of research we decided to go to Valparai for the weekend and stay in one of the tea estate bungalows, called up Wood Brair, Stanmore & Sinna Dorai’s, made calls to all three and unfortunately all three was full. On Friday afternoon again tried Sinna Dorai’s after reading the reviews and spoke with Ms Sujataha who said she will re-confirm all bookings and call me back in case of any cancellations, within 15 minutes gets a call saying one room is available, books the same immediately. I was slightly sceptical and miffed since the only thing Sujataha asked was my name, no. Of pax, children’s age and what time we will reach. In the evening called back and re-checked whether they accept credit/debit cards and the same was confirmed.

We started from Cochin at 6am passing through the Athirally-Vazhachal-Malakapara-Sholayar route. 90% of this route runs through thick jungle where there are lot of elephants as evident from the dung on the road, but one need to be careful for drunken drivers more than elephants as this is where the unruly crowd comes for merry making and on weekends you can pass many on the road.

Our stay at Sinnadorai's Bungalow which was simply an "out of the world experience". The location of Sinnadorai's Bungalow on top of a hill and the property itself is extremely beautiful and very well maintained.

To top it, the people here take extremely good care of the guests, it's really a family feeling being here and we loved every moment of it
We were welcomed by Sujatha and her staff with refreshing lemon tea. The bungalow was awesome with a large sit out all along the front of the building. The bungalow was originally the Assistant Manager's residence (in the estates, Assistant Manager is known as Sinnadorai). The building is surrounded by a beautiful lawn and garden with roses and other flowers. Inside the building - ceilings panelled with polished wood and superb cement flooring with red oxide.
The property and estate is owned by Parry Agro (Muruguppa Group). The building was renovated to restore it to its original beauty keeping some key elements and materials intact which is a great achievement. The lounge got new wooden flooring but the rest of the wooden panelling on ceilings, the wooden pillars in the sit out, etc are original from the British era when the bungalow was built. The Bungalow also houses a huge kitchen, dining, a library and two Bed rooms that are given out. There is a conference room attached to the main building - we were told that it was earlier a large car garage !
There are two other buildings in the campus each with two adjacent Bed rooms accessible separately from outside. These are also given out, so they have a total of 6 rooms. Each room is named after a famous planter of these estates - Col. Brock & Tyler in the main building, Maj. Wells & Sullivan in the second building and Marsh in the third building. These Bed rooms are huge with a fireplace, dressing room and large attached toilet ensuring that here is enough privacy for each family staying in the rooms.
The artefacts adorning the floors and walls of the rooms were beautiful including paintings, pictures, pots, mirrors, ceramic ware, etc and many of them were antiques like clocks, typewriter, wooden furniture, a Murphy radio, ceramic water filter to name a few. The library is very well stocked with books about tea, planting, history of the planters, rainforests, Valparai, etc. There are no TV's in the rooms ! Carry a book which yo can read whil enjoying the beauty and tranquillity, connect back with nature and get much needed rest away from the humdrum of city life so this makes lot of sense. But they do have a TV and Tata Sky HD in the conference room. There are board games like Scrabble, Snakes & Ladders and Chess in the sit out attached to main Bungalow.
Overall, the place has been renovated and interiors done up very thoughtfully with a great eye for detail !
After check-in we were introduced to the staff who take care of the place. Most of these folks were earlier employed in the tea estates (the ladies were tea pickers) and have been re-trained for the hospitality business. The staff here are very dedicated to their jobs and take care of the guests like their own family. This is a quality that comes down all the way from the Manager Sujatha, Assistant Manager Rajeev, Housekeeping staff Uma and Panchavarnam. (to name a few). The room had a lovely fireplace, a dressing room and a toilet. The vistas outside were simply breathtaking and a treat to watch sitting on the cast iron park benches, each placed facing different directions for superlative views of the surroundings.
This place was so beautiful we really did not want to go out the whole day. We went for a small trek accompanied by the gardener to the tea estate, it was decided to go for a drive after 10pm in our vehicle accompanied as the chances of seeing Bison & bear is very high. This was cancelled in the late evening after dinner as elephants were reported to be seen in the area. Food is excellent, extremely tasty for Indian Palate.
Second day we went to Valparai town to buy tea, mangoes, carrots & Tomatoes which you get fresh and there is nothing else to buy from this place. TMD is the best outlet selling tea according to Rajeev. On route we were able to see a gang of Lion Tailed Macaques.

There was only one sour incident, While booking I had checked and it was confirmed that they accept CC/debit cards, I rechecked this after reaching the property, next day before lunch I had informed Rajeev that I would like to make the settlement and was told that it takes only 5 minutes and he will call me after lunch, before going to Valapari I had again checked whether credit card was accepted and was told not to worry so I did not take extra cash. Just after we returned from Valparai and before lunch Rajeev suddenly was in a hurry to settle the bills and took me to his office behind the kitchen, all of a sudden it was informed that the card swiping machine is not working, the line is cut because “Bisons might have trampled on ground causing damage’ . As i was short of a few thousand rupees I took Rajeev again to Valparai town which is 12 Kms away in my car, there are 3 ATM’s, 2 were not working and there was a queue of 12 people in front of the 3rd one, it took 30 minutes to get the cash, bill was also in a different format than the agreed rates and had no seal or signature, I noticed that our name and address details are not entered in the guest check-in register also, decided not to argue as to not spoil the trip. Other than the unruly and unprofessional was in which Rajeev handled our check-out it was one of the best trips we had.

Room Tip: Carry enough cash as credit card/debit card swiping machine may not work suddenly and the town is 12...

Sinna Dorai.is a beautiful Bungalow with well laid out and manicured lawns, benches at vantage points, a plethora of flora and fauna and a terrific view of the tea gardens and the Anamalais. It is designed to take you back, down the years to the days of the Raj, complete with fireplaces in each room, antique typewriters and leather bound books embossed in gold.
Sujata and her team of Panchavarnam, Uma, Chinna Murugan, Peria Murugan and Ashirvadham are very solicitous, cheerful and caring. Chinna Murugan took us on this awesome walk up the hills to a Picnic Spot from where we saw the breath taking expanse of the Anamalais. He cheerfully pointed out rare herbs , plants and trees and thoughtfully carried umbrellas and water! Peria Murugan showed us wild bison from the grounds of the bungalow, in the dead of the night and patiently explained big and small details about the wildlife surrounding the area.
The food is tasty and laid out at the appointed times. The management discourages and even disallows room service
However,(some) children may be bored at Sinna Dorai's Bungalow. Firstly, there are no televisions in the rooms. Secondly, there is no play area though there are tables laid out with ludo, scrabble and chess. Lastly, there are really no "places to see" in Valparai and nights can get a tad lonely. But if it is boarding, lodging and ambience alone, Sinna Dorai measures up well!

Room Tip: You can request for a room in the main bungalow if you have senior citizens with you. Though the roo...
