“Great private bungalows”
Reviewed January 17, 2014 via mobile

The bungalows offer privacy, an ocean view, a quiet location right up the hill from the beach (5 minute walk) and a fully equipped cooking area that even has firewood and a grill! Ayangue is one of the few places on the coast where you can swim in a calm bay. The prices are unbeatable and the sweet, helpful caretaker, Jose, does a wonderful job.

Trying to research coastal travel in Ecuador can be a challenge. There are many nice areas, but they aren't necessarily places you want to stay unless you have specific business or activity there. Ayangue is one of these places - which is probably why you will find very little information about it.
The lodge itself is up on a hill, (maybe a 5minute walk to the beach) - many locals seemed unfamiliar with it (by name anyway) as the taxi driver had to ask quite a few people where it was before being able to find it - and Ayangue itself is very small.
The owner's brother was looking after La Rica Ruca when we arrived. He was very nice and accommodating. He took us to the beach and helped us order lunch and then left us to have a beer on the main street. He checked in on us in the evening to see if needed anything and offered assistance to find activities we were interested in - trekking, snorkelling, or fishing for example.
Like many places in coastal Ecuador there are a lot of dogs and roosters and they bark and crow all night long-so be prepared to lose sleep. Our "bungalow" had a set of bunkbeds and twin bed that my husband and I shared. There is a bathroom, sink and shower in the bungalow - but we only had water on the first day, which was unpleasant due to not realizing we could not flush or wash our hands until after using the toilet.
The hammock out front, was nice for relaxing and reading - but very dirty. The place smelled very musty and took quite a bit of getting used to - it was better with the windows opened up but due to the enormous amount of bugs biting us we tried to keep them closed and still woke up with insect bites all over our bodies.
I acknowledge that for someone who enjoys roughing, speaks fluent Spanish and is familiar with Ecuador - La Rica Ruca would maybe be a good option. But I am not any of these things and I had a terrible time in Ayangue and wouldn't advise going there.
