“Step back in time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2014

This train ride is for anyone to enjoy stepping back in time. The area you travel thru for about an hour is very pretty. They have entertainers that play music as they walk thru the train cars. When you get to the Grand Canyon you have a bus waiting to take you to the outlooks. Lunch was a buffet at the Maswick lodge. It was good food but not exceptional. Price was right , so not complaining. Would have liked more time at the depot in the Grand Canyon to look at that hotel area.

“Wholesome Family Entertainment”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2014

We stayed two nights at the Grand Canyon Railway hotel and traveled to the Grand Canyon and back in one day via the Grand Canyon Railway. Prior to boarding there is an outdoor Wild West show that is funny and entertaining. We traveled in Coach Class and found it to be a good view and comfortable. I wouldn't advise to pay more to travel in the higher priced cars as the view would not be any better, and there is not really much to see during the trip. On the way back we did get to see a group of elk which was pretty awesome. The Wild West Cowboys also "rob" the train on the way back which was great fun for the children on board. There were singers with instruments that played in our car both on the way to the Canyon and back for about 20 minutes each way. We were in the back of the car and didn't feel like we really got to be part of it, so I would advise to ask for a seat closer to the front of the car. In addition, some of the windows are not totally clear due to a little part of metal being there. That was our case in row 18, so ask for a row that has a totally clear view window wise. We did get to move on the way because there were extra seats, but on the way back it was full because some people that had stayed overnight the previous day traveled back. None of the lodging that I saw at the Grand Canyon appealed o me, and there is really very little to do there. The Passenger Assistant on our train was named Kathy with a K, and she was very nice and helpful to all. She gave a great deal of information on the way to the Grand Canyon including providing a map that we marked as she advised us of places to go and see while there. She also gave extra help to those on the train with special needs as to how they could ride a tram due to being limited physically. While at the Grand Canyon you are on your own and given instructions on where to meet back and what time to be there. We were dropped at a nice location, and the view was stunning, however the weather was horrible and we didn't enjoy the experience much. That is of course no fault of the Grand Canyon Railway as none of us can control mother nature. We spent a lot of time just sitting inside as did many other passengers due to the weather conditions. It was about 15 degrees and the wind was blowing 50-60 mph. On the way back it rained and sleeted. There are a lot of places to eat and shop where we were dropped off at. The majority was the usual tourist stuff, such as T-shirts and hats, however there was one place called the Hopi House that had beautiful turquoise jewelry. All of the items for sale were expensive. I did see some people who took fruit and water with them. On the train there is a café car, but I didn't go to it. On the way back Kathy K worked very hard to keep everyone entertained with games and jokes. Overall it was a nice experience, but a rather pricey one. I think it is a good alternative to driving to the Grand Canyon as when were there we saw that cars were backed up waiting to get in, and once in they were struggling to find parking spots in the location that we were at. We did tip the Cowboys when we were "robbed", and also tipped Kathy K. as she worked very hard and did a great job. I would recommend the train again, but I wasn't impressed with the Grand Canyon Railway hotel. I didn't see anything in the area that was better though. The hotel is located within walking distance of historic Route 66, and has some fun historic sites and good places to eat. The buffet at the Grand Railway Hotel is good and cost 10.50 for breakfast. Spencer's within the hotel was awful. We received bad service and my food was burned. I told the bartender and so did my husband, but she just ignored both of us. I was tired and hungry, so I just filled up on the complimentary chips and salsa and decided that I would send an e-mail to the manager after I returned home. I would not recommend Spencer's at all. It has a very pretty old bar in it which is why we went there in the first place, but it is understaffed and overpriced as well as the poor service I already mentioned.

“Great Train Ride”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2014

Relaxing Train Ride to the Grand Canyon - our hostess gave us interesting facts along the way along with entertainment from the singers and Sheriff. Snacks & beverages both ways. If you're doing the one day trip you don't have a lot of time to see the Canyon but it is a great trip nonetheless. A very enjoyable day.

“More than a train ride”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2014

The organisation of this experience was second to none from the shoot out at the Wild West to the the service from our train compartment hostess. The journey passes quickly as the buffet food was consumed and coffee drank. Musical entertainment was provided on the way there and back, and even more entertaining was the robbery on the way back.
The arrival and departure times at the Grand Canyon only gave time for a short walk and a taster of the Grand Canyon but the train is a round trip and accommodation for 2 or 3 nights could be arranged giving time for a more adequate walk into the Grand Canyon.
Overall this was a very full excellent day with exercise, entertainment and great views.

“Unbelievably Awesome!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2014

We cannot tell you how impressed we were with every detail of this trip. From check in to check out everyone we encountered was extremely professional and helpful. Excellent for ALL Ages! Check in once and your luggage is in your room at the Grand Canyon and then back at the hotel. The train was first class service all the way. The buffet was amazing per my teenage daughter. The servers, staff, actors, tour guides and housekeepers were all focused on customer service. This is a must for any one of any age. As the four of us paid less than $1600 for three nights and four meals not to mention the amenities on the train and the bus tour and access to the Grand Canyon. It was a five star experience all around. We will do it again with extended family soon.
