This hotel is comparable to a Comfort Inn Suites, with the added ambience of a classic, wood-adorned turn-of-the-century bar, Spencers.

If you're planning to take the railway, why not spend the extra money for the Luxury "Parlor" class car, and instead stay in a nearby Motel 6. You can always stop by the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel for a drink, or to peruse the railway station and grounds without staying at the hotel.

The value of the Grand Canyon Railway is in its proximity to the train, and not for its modest amenities.

We arrived around 3pm and we parked our car outside the front entrance as there was not one available car parking space available. When we informed the reception they said wait till the train gets back from the Canyon, that's fine but what do we do until then? Booking in was a bit of a wait and we were given a room that was in a quiet section. Came out of reception and parked the car at the end of the line but it had no parking bay allocated. I was not going to pull the suitcases to the hotel from a half mile away! When we found our room the corridor was being painted and the fumes were too much. So back to reception which had an enourmous queue but the lady recognised us and to be fair gave us another room right away. The room was big and better than we expected, good air conditioning and room to walk around the room. Max and Thelma's food was good and had choices. The breakfast buffet was fresh and cooked well. Not much to do at night as the lobby was always crowded and the bar too expensive. It is OK to stay for the convenience of the train trip but take a book as there's not much else to do.

Okay, I don't understand the negative reviews. We booked 2 rooms, one for my husband and myself and one for my son, his pregnant wife and 3 grandkids. We all loved the hotel, loved the buffet and found Max and Thelma's to have a good assortment. The prime rib was very good along with straight horseradish and also mild horseradish. We had many choices for the kids too which they loved. We also had steamed veggies and green beans, mashed potatoes, pastas and salad bar with soup choices. They also had the best fresh fruit which was perfect in ripeness. Desserts were good too. I had carrot cake. The little ones had puddings and the grown children loved the cobbler with the delicious berries. Our package was very nice, plus you were right at the train depot and never had to worry about anything. Our room was clean too, not dirty like others said and we slept quite well. The maids redid the room the next a.m. with fresh toiletries too and clean towels which were very thick and very large. It was a great experience not like the one I had dreaded after reading the blogs. PLEASE go and see for yourself. You can't expect 5 star stuff at a ma and pop place and but you can certainly find the food really enjoyable. The train was great too, but book the air conditioned cars! Happy trails to all of you and please go and see for yourself! WE all had fun and hope to go back.

The Canyon Railway Hotel has the charm of a small family-owned motel from the 40s/50s, and is very clean and well run. Updated fixtures, paint, and ceiling fans show the owners care about the property - BUT - when we stayed there (mid June) we were told at check in that the A/C didn't work and to 'open the windows and let the fresh mountain air cool the room'. The room finally cooled down about 1am (ventilation was one window in the front of the room. The room and beds were small (remember the 50s? Queen and King beds hadn't become popular yet) but there was a small fridge and a microwave (nice!). My advice: make sure ALL advertised items in the room are functioning when you make the reservation. Also, bring your own normal necessities like tissues, blow dryer, and shampoo.

  • Liked — Reasonable price (for the Grand Canyon area); nice staff
  • Disliked — AC didn't work, nor did the wireless internet

My family booked a night at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel and a trip on the train for the following day. The hotel was easy to find. It is a large two story complex in Williams with a beautiful view of some pine covered mountains. I had higher expectations for the hotel than what we got. We paid $500 for 2 adults and 1 child for one night at the hotel, buffet dinner and breakfast, and RT in an antique railcar. Although we had a wonderful time, I didn't feel it was worth $500. The room was equal to an older Motel6 or Red Roof Inn. Not bad- but not above average. The buffets were ok. The night we were there the buffet had roast beef, roast pork, and fried catfish. The train ride was nice. It was relaxing and my kids really enjoyed it. The on-board entertainment was fun. Remember to bring some $1's to tip them. I did make a mistake of assuming the Club Car would have air conditioning. The ride out was fine, but the ride back was a little warm. The did hand out wet paper towels to help cool us off.

In all, I would book the train trip again, but I think I would skip the hotel stay and meals.

We have just returned from the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel where we had gone on the Canyon Limited Plus package. We were all very impressed with the friendliness of the staff from the hotel staff to the gift shop, restaurant and railway staff. They were always ready to assist and never uttered a cross word. The whole trip fell into place beautifully. The rooms were spacious and clean and comfortable. We are ready to go back again including our 18 year old daughter!!!!!

  • Liked — The convenience to the railroad and the atmosphere- gunfight was great - people friendly
  • Disliked — inconvenience in getting to the pool from the romms starting with 1300's

My husband and I booked a 1-night stay with the rail trip up to the canyon. Finding the property was difficult, and we found that we couldn't get a king-size bed upon arrival because all the rooms had two standard full-size beds. The furnishings need to be upgraded in the bedroom, and the bathrooms are incredibly out-dated. The lobby fireplace was under repair and so the sitting area just off the lobby looked an utter mess. The hotel was having a "Thomas the Train" event and was busy making sure that only people who paid for that event could get into the area, but the problem was, people who wanted to get on the train, or get to the restaurant were blocked from a direct route because of it. More planning for that kind of event needs to be done and they need to consider not inconveniencing their OTHER guests. They have a guaranteed customer base that comes through their rooms, and they need to re-invest in some serious upgrades.

  • Liked — Only the Train Ride itself
  • Disliked — The bedroom, the bathroom, the location, the atmosphere and the complete lack of hospitality
