I live in the area and sometimes I get tired of desert country, and this is a nice green getaway with a tiny lake, birds, palm trees, and hiking trails.

Cardinals, phainopeplas, black phoebes, palm trees, paths along the Hassayampa surroundings, uphill to a great overlook, wonderful dispalys in the headquarters (once an old dude ranch).

What a treat to get off Hwy60 on a hot afternoon and refresh ourselves in this lovely oasis of greenery, with its helpful and enthusiastic staff. It was our first experience of nature in SouthWest USA, so everything was very strange. It was hot and dry (the 'river' was only a tiny trickle) but the beautiful trees and shrubs gave us some shade and the flowers were astonishing. We didn't do too well on the birds - lots of songs and calls but they were mostly skulking in the shade - but this was partly because alas we didn't have time to sit around. The trails we took were easy to follow (though some parts were very sandy) and one led out on to an open dry hillside (full of flowers and lizards) with views down on the canopy. A must for any nature-lover heading for Wickenburg and beyond!

The trails were short and we were able to walk them all in a few hours. There's alot of opportunity to see a lot of birds in a small area. It did get warm even for the end of March and I thought they would be open earlier for that reason
