We stopped here for a late lunch after visiting the Desert Caballeros Museum, and enjoyed sandwiches on homemade bread, home made ice cream, and serenade by local guitarist who sounded a lot like Johnny Cash. He was joined later by another guitarist. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

We always stop here for ice cream driving between Las Vegas and the Phoenix area. Our favorite is the Hassayampa Mud - named for the local river. Fun, quirky, old place with lots of room to sit down and take a break from the drive.

We make regular runs between California and Phoenix, and have discovered this to be THE place to get our ice cream fix en route. They produce a great quality product with some interesting flavors; their milkshakes are especially creamy. Happened to try the chicken salad sandwich special on this most recent run, and it was excellent - they use a quality whole grain bread and the tasty result was big enough to serve two.

We were heading home from a couple of days in Sedona and our last stop was a late lunch in Wickenburg. Because of the good reviews, we headed straight to Chaparral. Hot dog was about what you'd expect. "Jail Tree" sandwich was a sort of Philly cheesesteak that didn't quite make it. Ok in it's own right, but not as good as a real cheesesteak.

The ice cream was fine - not exceptional (if you've lived on a dairy farm and made it yourself, like I have). For a definite regional flavor, have the prickly pear ice cream. Made from the red fruits, it has a berry-like flavor - maybe between a strawberry and a raspberry. At any rate, very refreshing.

Ironically, if you are there on a hot summer day, take a light jacket in with you. They have evaporative cooling, which means the fan blows all the time, and they don't regulate the temperature. We couldn't see anywhere to sit to get away from the "breeze" - a napkin set open on the table blows away. By the time we had something cold to drink and ate our ice cream, we were so cold that it was a relief to get outside.

I've said before - but it still holds true - if you like ice cream, or cookies, or salads .. this is THE place to go. The hot chocolate is the best I've ever had anywhere in the world, as is the ice cream - where you can choose from many great fkavors. All the food is homemade and made with natural ingredients, and the staff is extremely friendly.
Work by local artists is also sold at the Chaparral, and there's a small gift area.
Over lunch time there is life music to entertain the guess.
There's also free wifi.
