We decided to check out White Tank Mountain Regional Park for the photo opportunities. We were not disappointed. We were staying at a hotel off the 101 and we took Exit 9 (Olive Rd) and followed the signs that pointed to the park. A word of advice, those signs only appear for so long and we literally drove until we got to the mountain and the park entrance. Since I didn't see signs telling me to turn elsewhere I went with it and we made it. There is a per car fee for entering the park and you are handed a map as you enter. There are several areas to pull over, get out and use a picnic table or grill station. There are modern facilities at most of these areas and the water out of the fountains was better than in the city. The trails are fairly well marked with distances and details. We took Black Rock and Waterfall Trails and were not disappointed with the scenery and the quiet of being away from the city. My fiance wanted to get some landscape photos and he found plenty to shoot. We could have easily spent over 4 hours wandering the park and didn't because of other plans but it has definitely made our list of things to revisit next time we are in Arizona. We stopped in at the Nature Center on the way out and it has a modest gift shop, vending machines, restrooms and of course park volunteers with info as needed and maps and other details.

An interesting note on the drive to the park, we passed cotton fields and flower fields (think nursery owned flower fields) and I thought that would be interesting if someone didn't know about the agriculture of Arizona to see these fields and understand it's more than sand.

When we left the park we took a different route. We were going on to Avondale for our other plans and we took Olive Rd to Dysart, Dysart to McDowell and that leads to the I-10. With the valley being a basic grid it is easy to get around.

Also of note, we had good reception on our phones while in the park. We also noticed on the maps we received there were more competitive trails for the experienced hiker. By no means did we cover this park adequately but like I said, it is on our list for a return visit. Can't wait!

I've been visiting/living in the west side of the Valley of the Sun since 1988 and visits, hikes and picnics to the White Tank park have always been enjoyable and should be on any visitor's list.
