“pet "friendly"??”
Reviewed April 13, 2009

After reading reviews here on Trip Advisor, we decided to take a chance on the Red Feather, as we were traveling with our pet. As noted by others, the breakfast is pretty minimal, and we ended up at the Mc Donalds across the street, which was just about the slowest fast food restaurant we've ever been in...wonder what they do in summer when it is really busy. The rooms are also minimal, no hair dryer or coffee maker let alone a fridge. As noted by others, the pet fee was $10 per day, which is pretty standard. I considered the $50.00 deposit as a "zinger" to a captive tourist audience. At check-in, my husband was handed a slip of paper declaring, " Do not leave unattended pets in your room. Our housekeepers will not service your room if your pet is unattended. If your pet is found unattended and/or is disturbing other guests you will automatically forfeit your deposit, in addition to providing possible monetary compensation for guests that were disturbed by your pet." How friendly is that?? They should advertise as pet tolerant, perhaps, but friendly? No.The desk clerk told my husband, "Most people" walk their dogs at the canyon rim. This did indeed appear to be true as we saw many people there with dogs. Our pet, however, is a CAT, who would most decidedly not like to be walked anywhere. The clerk then suggested that we board the cat at the kennel in the park, at, of course, an additional $11 per day. ($13 for overnight) Upon arrival at our room, we beheld a ripped carpet at the entrance. My husband immediately called the desk to inform them that it was in that condition and we were not to be held responsible. She told him that she knew it was ripped!? How is that possible in a motel of this size? I guess as a pet owner one should expect to be stuck in a previously damaged room. When we left the next morning to sight-see, there was a man, possibly the pet inspector, in the room next to us, staring at us as we left, perhaps to insure that we did not leave the cat unattended, which we did not. That was creepy. When we checked out after the second night, the "inspection" was made promptly and we received a receipt showing the credited deposit. This winter we made an extended trip through the southeast and southwest, from Florida through Utah, staying in 11 motels and 2 condos, all of which billed themselves as pet friendly. The condos, of course, required deposits and cleaning fees, but the Red Feather was the only motel to require a deposit ,and the only one to not allow the pet to remain in the room alone. We were there on a weekend, so perhaps paid a higher price, $120 per night, including pet fee. Would I recommend this motel?? Without a pet, definitely not. With a pet, sadly, this is probably the most economical option.

For its location (Grand Canyon) and compared to similar hotels, it was pretty good. It was annoying that the breakfast room was packed solid, but hey - they had a breakfast room. Pool and hot tub, as well as guest rooms were clean and tidy. I found the staff to be friendly, but not willing to go out of their way.

My wife, dog and I stayed at the Red Feather while visiting the Grand Canyon’s South Rim last weekend. There are two parts – a hotel (interior hallways, lobby) and a motel (exterior entrances). The former is non-smoking and no-pets; we stayed in the latter which will be the focus of my review, although there is overlap – e.g. breakfast, check-in/out, pool. The motel was far from scenic but the rooms were fairly good sized, plenty of parking. There are two levels, but we did not hear any of the other guests when inside our room, despite the fact that the Red Feather was filled to capacity. There were two queen beds, sink outside of the bathroom. The toilet/shower room was tiny but functioned fine. Bathroom fan worked well. Drying line in tub if you need to do any laundry. They provided bath and body works shampoo, soap and conditioner. Brink lotion – it is really dry up at 7000 ft (the elevation of the property). No hair dryer. Large flat screen TV with HBO. The wireless internet worked even in the motel with decent speed for the type of property. The heat worked well but if you leave it on all night, you’ll cook. We did not try the restaurant. The continental breakfast left room to be desired – white toast, bagels, and English muffins, packaged danish, juice and coffee (no milk, cereal, waffles, eggs). There were decent Dannon yogurts. If you stay in the hotel, you do not want a guestroom near the breakfast room because it gets LOUD in there – the breakfast room, oddly, is located in a large guestroom not in the lobby – glad I didn’t have to sleep near it. Check in and out were easy. Note: there is a $10 pet fee and a $50 pet deposit. They do a pet inspection upon departure (took 3 min from phoning the desk until completion). It was no hassle as our large dog was fine – they must have been burned by people’s pets destroying rooms in the past. The “pet walk” is like a large litterbox for dogs, although they provide pet waste bags. There are plenty of other areas to walk the dog down the street. We at the We Cook Pizza down the street – it was fine, nothing special, but edible. There was a place called Mexican Food across the street that was also fine. The whole town is basically 3-4 motels, gift shops, and a couple eating establishments. However, the National Park is less than 2 miles up the road and dogs cannot stay in park hotels (dogs can go on the trails above the Grand Canyon’s rim). We paid $213 total for 2 nights including tax and dog fee with AAA rate in the motel. I’d go back again – no problems.

lots of parking, quick check-in, quiet building, except for heater switching on/off all night.
No fan in bathroom. Clean room. no restaraunt. Guests look to be families and hikers.

We almost canceled our reservation after reading all of the bad reviews, but were pleasantly surprised by the Red Feather Lodge. It's not a five star destination resort, but served very well for our two days at the canyon last Fall.
We stayed in room 4144, located in the older motel building, it was little small but clean specially for being a room that allowed pets. You couldn't beat the location. We were only a few minutes drive from the park entrance and within walking distance to many restaurants. Watch out fot the McDonald's across the highway however. They were very overpriced.
It's also a great place if you're bringing your pet. Our pug Cosmo enjoyed the walking area provided out back and pets are allowed in the park on paved trails above the rim. We also enjoyed the continental breakfast which had plenty to choose from. For the price and the location we felt the lodge was a good value.
The staff was friendly and when checking out from a pet friendly room they have to see the room first but it took only about 5 minutes.

This place has problems. Staff not friendly at all. They advertise that they are "pet friendly" but when you get there they basicly threaten you with their pet policy that you have to sign. You have to promise not to ever leave your dog alone in the room, which is virtually impossible when you are on vacation at the grand canyon. They make you paranoid and threaten to take away the $50 deposit.
The shower was weak, bathroom incredibly small, breakfast was very meager (barely edible), ice machine was a LONG walk away. Custodians were noisy during the morning. TV didn't always work and HBO channels never came in. Location is great but overall the place was dumpy and nothing special. Would NOT stay here again. In this economy why stay somewhere where the staff is not grateful/happy to have you?

  • Liked — location was close to grand canyon
  • Disliked — breakfast was gross, unfriendly staff, dumpy room
