“Surprisingly nice stay”
Reviewed June 19, 2014 via mobile

Look this is Tusayan, a few miles from the Grand Canyon. The only reason this town is here is because of the tourists visiting the National Park. Everything is expensive! If you have to shop at the General Store you might need to call your banker for a loan! You would be better off, both financially and satisfaction, when it comes to food and lodging to bring an RV or motorhome and cook all your own meals. But if that is not an option, then the Best Western Premier is a great choice. This is not what I had as an image for a Best Western, maybe the "Premier" label implies a different level. The entry lobby is nice. Two restaurants off the lobby, the gift shop and the front desk. Plenty of room. We had the two queen bed room and it was nice and much larger than a normal room size. The mechanical unit fan did not turn off, so at night we just turned the whole unit off. The breakfast buffet is much better than your normal continental breakfast of pre-made pastries and cereal. Hot french toast, fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs (powered) and sausage. Coffee, tea and milk along with a good selection of bread for toast. It is the same breakfast selection every day, but still good for the 4 days we stayed here. The restaurant on the main floor and the bar on the lower floor have the same menu; food is good $9 to $13 a plate. The lounge is great and the Coronado room is fine dining with seafood and steak, pricy so we didn't go; but others give it good reviews. The pool is fine. Not very big and it isn't heated. But after a day at the Grand Canyon a dip in a cold pool is just what is needed. Be careful though, you are at 6500 feet in elevation and laying by the pool in the afternoon is a recipe for a quick sunburn. Indoor hot tub and fitness center are fine and well maintained. The staff was courteous, seemed like all were from Jamaica; they had that really cool accent. Very friendly when I asked for extra coffee cups in the morning. I would stay here again; just watch out for the elk as they like to roam the parking lot at night.

We traveled with our granddaughters to the Grand Canyon, and this was our home base. We found all staff members to be friendly, helpful and engaged. Our room was perfect: good size and comfortable with a view of the pool. Yes, the pool is a modest size, but, my goodness, you're within shouting distance of the Grand Canyon! The breakfast was beyond any we have had anywhere - ever, and the staff worked tirelessly to keep selections plentiful and the tables clean and available for new arrivals. We had one meal at the hotel's newly opened cafe (2nd day of operation) and found the meal to be average and a little disappointing given our complete satisfaction with everything else. Our comments were taken to heart by management, and we feel confident that improvement is on its way. All in all a great experience for us all!

I'll start by saying that the lobby is quite nice and makes a nice first impression. We didn't have any problems checking in. We had arrived around dinner. There are two different restaurants in the hotel: a nice restaurant on the lobby level and a sports bar downstairs. We have a 5 yo and after traveling in the car all day, we didn't feel that she would be able to sit still for very long so we headed downstairs. There is a game room/arcade with a 6 lane bowling alley across from the bar. The service in the bar was horrible. There was an NBA finals game on and one of the servers was more interested in watching the game than doing her job. The food was unremarkable. The rooms are spread out in several different buildings. It wasn't a problem, but I can see that it would be if it was raining. We stayed in just a regular room with 2 Queen beds. We had a problem with our A/C the first night. The unit kept cutting on and off all night and it would get quite warm in the room before the unit would come on again. We reported it the next morning and the maintenance dept came quickly and changed the filter. They do have a nice breakfast buffet in the morning. The room is very large and we never had any kind of wait. We never made use of the pool, so I cannot comment on that. To be honest, I never even saw it so it must be on a different side of the hotel. One of the good things about the hotel is that you can catch the shuttle right in front of the hotel that takes you to the National Park. I think it was about a 10 minute ride. The shuttle also stops at the Grand Hotel and Big E Steakhouse. We also used the bowling alley which the kids gave a big thumbs up too. Seems like it was about $20 for the 4 of us to bowl one game, which included shoe rental. Gift shop did have a nice selection of stuff which was priced about the same as everywhere else. Maybe if we hadn't had such poor service the first night, I would have given this hotel a "4" rating. But we stayed at other Best Westerns on our trip which were much better.

Dear wareagletraveler,
Thank you for posting your review of our property.

We appreciate that you selected our hotel for your family for your recent trip to the Grand Canyon. We do sincerely apologize that the server in the Saguaro Bar and Grill was not attentive to your needs during your dinner on your first night. We strive to ensure that we are always providing excellent customer service and we apologize that this was not the case in this instance. We have passed along your comments to our Food and Beverage Director.

We are glad that you found your room to be quite large and that our maintenance staff were able to quickly check on the air conditioning in your room when you reported it as an issue.

I see that your family chose to take the shuttle bus from our hotel to the Grand Canyon. As you mention they pick up at various places including right in front of our hotel and take you to the park. They schedule pickups every 20 minutes which makes it very convenient for guests.

Again, thank you for staying with us. We do hope that you will come back again soon.

Best regards,
Heather

At arrival, the only person that seemed happy to have me as a guest was the bellman, who offered me and others cold glasses of water while we stood in the long line to check in.
The hotel was large and broken into satellite areas bit easy to find the right series of rooms driving around the parking lot.
Our room seems to have been setup originally as an accessible room but converted to standard rooms since all of the sinks were down at my knees.
The door to our room had a 1/4" gap which allowed a heavy draft and bugs get through, but after I called the front desk a maintenance person came quickly and added a seal which fixed this.
The HD TV stations were pitiful, only getting a signal for 2 out of the advertised 10 stations. All other std stations were quite fuzzy.
Breakfast was very good, and included in the rate. Wifi was generally good as well.
Access to the park was very convenient, and there is a shuttle right in front of the hotel.
The pool was nice but quite small. Also if you want sun you must go before about 4pm because the pool is tucked behind the building and trees.
The rooms were quite large which was nice since I had my wife and two kids. We also did laundry here...that was nice to have. Detergent and softener is sold in the laundry rooms.
The fun center could use a few more updated video games but the fact that this hotel had a fun center was neat.
Overall it was a decent stay

If you are visiting the Grand Canyon, there are roughly 10 hotels between what is inside the South Rim side of the park and Tusayan, which is the little village about a mile from the main (South Entrance) gate. This area is very remote, and the next nearest option is about 40 miles away in Williams. The laws of supply and demand apply in a big way.

There were several buildings as part of this hotel. There is a main building with parking all around it. The front desk experience was slow and frustrating - it took about 15-20 minutes to get checked in and we were only #5 on line. The room was spacious enough and clean. Yes, it could have used some updates, but this is the desert, not mid-town Manhattan. There were a few options within the hotel for dinner. We chose the Saguaro Sports Bar, which had lmited seating. Our waiter was friendly, the food choices limited, but passable.

The reason I rated this hotel Very Good is that I am giving them credit for amenities considering how remote they are. There is a 6-lane bowling alley in the property, an arcade with video games and pinball. There is even a pool table in the sports bar.

The bad news is the room rate - we were there in June, 2014 and paid ~ $250 for one night. Summer is obviously high season and there were plenty of families and tourists from all over the world competing for limited rooms.

There was a breakfast buffet which was included in the room, but we got sandwiches to go from RP's, which was excellent.

Room Tip: I'd ask for the main building (5000) if possible. It seems these rooms are more updated than ot...

Monica and I had a grand time at the Grand Canyon in June, 2014. In addition to the excellent accommodations provided by the Tusayan Best Western Squire we enjoyed easy and convenient access to the many activities associated with this premier National Park. Everyone should go there and try it.

Stayed here on an overnight while visiting Grand Canyon. The hotel is located in the town just outside the park and is serviced by shuttle buses to the park.

The hotel itself is at the higher end of the Best Western chain. There's a restaurant and bar as well as a gift shop. Rooms are clean with many practicalities. Wifi works like a charm.

Only downside for me was the food wasn't great.

Dear ImprovisedTravel,
We appreciate you writing a post about your visit to our hotel.

As you mention we are in close proximity to the south entrance to the Grand Canyon National Park. Shuttle buses are available which pick up guests in front of our hotel every 20 minutes driving them into the national park and back. This is convenient for guests and many do chose to ride the shuttle buses.

As you mention, we do have three restaurants onsite as well as a gift shop. There is also an arcade and bowling alley on the first floor. We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the food while you were here.

Thank you again for staying with us. We appreciate your comments.
