“Run Down and Rude Staff”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

We stayed at several hotels on our vacation this year and this one was the worst bar none. We called ahead when we were driving in to the Grand Canyon to confirm our reservation since we would be arriving after dark. At that time they never indicated there were any issues with our reservation. However when we arrived they had given our room away. They said we had approved this change. No. We had not. Instead they gave us a queen standard room but charged us the same price we were to pay for the king suite we reserved. I balked a little bit and this very rude man told me too bad they were sold out. The room was run down, carpet stained and looked as if the furniture came from garage sales. Yuck. The air conditioner was deafening and made it difficult to sleep. By the way, this hotel is very hard to find as it is not visible from the street. If we ever return to the Grand Canyon we will most definitely stay else where.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel.

Seven of us on a 7 day motorcycle trip through northern Arizona stayed in different locations each day. We choose the Canyon Plaza for it location close to the Grand Canyon. We found our accomadations clean, pleasant and very confortable. The hotel offers a full dining room and bar. They discount you meals and drinks as their guest. The absolute best part of the hotel was the staff. I read in another review the front desk is unmotivated. This was not what we experienced. Everyone we had contact with was pleasant and accomodating. Epecially a gentleman in management by the name of Chris. I appologize I did not get his last name. Chris made us feel like not just special guest but old friends. He was truly concerned in us enjoying our stay with his hotel. Thanks again Chris. I firmly believe that if you are friendly and pleasant with service employees you will get a lot futher. Maybe the reviewer I mentioned did not do this. My only negative to include their internet service was down the day we were there and I needed to use a computer.

Room Tip: The unit in the rear maybe be a bit quieter.

Ok room, excellent location to the grand canyon and the Tusayan facilities are useful. Good nights sleep with the exception of the noise of the ice machine all night long from the corridor.
Had one of the beers at the bar at 20% off which was nice. Saved our money and eat at the MCd's for dinner and breakfast.

Cost v location makes this a nice hotel!

The front desk staff is truly unmotivated and if you arrive during peak hours expect to wait in an unorganized line. The process is slow and very distracted. The property is not bad looking but sits behind the IMAX theater and another resort so it is hard to find. The rooms are somewhat dated, but nicely appointed with granite counters in the bathroom. I found our room blind to be dusty and so when I opened it in the morning I found out why it wasn't ever used.... WHAT A VIEW!!

Room Tip: Check out other "Grand" hotels in the area.

This would be a good place for a quick overnight tourist stay but it needs a bit of a facelift to fulfil its potential. On the surface, everything is there but it all just looks a little tired. The restaurant was very busy in the evening, as they were trying to cater for the huge numbers they had passing through, but the food was fine and the service prompt and friendly. We did not want to get caught in the rush at breakfast next morning and so went to the nearby Wendy's,which served a very tasty meal.

My family stayed at the Canyon Plaza Resort in Tusayan, Arizona on the night of Sunday, August 19, 2012.  We woke up early the following morning to see the sunrise at the Grand Canyon.  When my husband went to wake up our kids on the other bed, he noticed several bugs, dead and alive, on the bed sheet.  We called the front desk and a staff member came to verify that they were, in fact, bedbugs.  Needless to say, we were horrified from the moment we discovered the bugs in the room.

I spent that entire day in the hotel's laundry room washing all of our clothes and shoes, as well as wiping down what I could not put in the washing machine and dryer.  The staff seemed to be very understanding and accommodating but both the hotel manager and owner were quite the opposite.  We had to request to speak to them; neither showed up to check on us at any point.  When we finally spoke to the manager, we were told:

1. The bedbugs were not there last night.  Despite already admitting that the maids do not regularly check for bedbugs when cleaning each room, she basically accused us of bringing in the bedbugs.  We know that we were not responsible for the bedbugs for three reasons.  We stayed at our cousins' home for one week without a a trace of them at any point. The bugs we found on our kids' hotel bed were different sizes; therefore, they were at different stages of their life cycle.  We also later discovered that they were not only in the bedroom of our hotel suite, but crawling on the couch in the front room as well.

2.  Earlier, a front desk employee had informed us that they had an offsite studio suite reserved for us for that evening. Later, the manager told us that there was no suite available for the night.  However, she had the audacity to offer us the same bedbug-infested room we had just stayed in.  (They had "bombed" the room and normally, a 24-hour wait is required before reentering but apparently she was willing to overlook that for us.)

3.  We requested that they reimburse the cost of replacing our luggage.  I did not want to risk bringing the bugs and their eggs home.  They refused to do this and then offered to give us a former employee's luggage that were left in their possession.  No thanks!

I am fully aware that bedbug infestations can happen anywhere.  I admit, we should have checked the room first before bringing our things in or sleeping there.  It was a mistake that we will never forget or repeat.  What upset us the most was the way our situation was handled by both the manager and the hotel owner.  They treated us as if we were responsible for the infestation and that this occurrence was not a big deal.  I would not recommend anyone stay there.  I know I would not even if they had the last room available the town.

GRANDCANYONRES, General Manager at Canyon Plaza Resort, responded to this review, October 8, 2012
This is absolutely not a true reflection on this property. There were no problems reported in the room prior to their arrival at our hotel. Their suitcase was infested with bedbugs which led us to believe they brought the bugs with them. I am well aware of the growing problem with bugs throughout the industry and already have procedures in place to prevent bedbugs infesting the mattress/box spring. Our property is protected from bugs coming in from the outside by spraying outside the property on a weekly basis. In this case, we believed the guests had brought the bugs with them by way of their suitcases and we immediately shut the room down, threw out all bedding and shut down the room until we were completely assured that this would not, could not, happen again. Any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me, the General Manager/Owner, Antoinette Serna.

This place has tons of people from bus-tours coming in every day. These people stay only 1 or 2 days and will never come back. Because of that the service is below average. They include 18% gratitude to your pricy bill and waive goodbye.
Don't expect any good food or any service, it's just a carousel of tourists coming and going.
Pool is kind of nice though, although it was very cold, our kids liked it.

Location to the park is great, just a 10 min drive to the Canyon.

Room Tip: if you want to use the pool, ask for a room in the building next to it. We could watch our children...
