“Beautiful setting, nice rooms, great base in San Pedro La Laguna”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

I usually stay with local families when I'm in San Pedro La Laguna but made reservations at Hotel Mikaso when I had a group of friends visiting with me. We had 3 lake view rooms in a row and the little single room nearby. That gave us our own beautiful patio area with plenty of seating and wonderful views, especially early in the day. We shopped at the produce market and Tienda Aracely and used the nice share kitchen to prepare breakfasts and lunches. There's wifi in the restaurant area and on the top deck. The staff was accommodating and stored our luggage for us since we were leaving San Pedro hours after check out time.

Although it wasn't a problem for us, do note that you can't drive to the door of the hotel; it's a block or so from the nearest street. I was surprised that they didn't accept credit cards at this time. Also, the nearest part of the lake has lots of seaweed. For us, that added to the interest; we enjoyed watching locals collect it for drying and the herons and egrets feeding in it.

Room Tip: The lake view rooms cost more but we loved having a nice deck area right by our rooms as a gathering...

In July, 2012 had 10 most enjoyable days at Hotel Mikaso. Loved the location of the hotel perfectly situated by the lake with expansive views of lake, lush mountains and the towering volcanoes. Truly spectacular! And yes, it just may be one of the most beautiful lake settings on the planet.

Some nice colonial architectural touches, very simple, clean rooms, small bathrooms, hot water 9 days out of 10. The wide veranda outside rooms 8, 9 and 10 with comfy outdoor furniture was a favorite spot. Room 8 maybe not for light sleepers due to local women doing wash in the lake a few feet away. It was the loud chatting that was irritating at times.

Do not be put off when arriving by the walkway to the hotel located between 2 cornfields. It's an entertaining piece of local color. This is a small rural community and these folks live on corn. Stand on the corner and you can easily get a tuk tuk from the hotel to the docks or the center of town. We arrived by tuk tuk with our luggage placed on top. Do NOT try to walk to the hotel from the dock, if you have luggage, backpack would be fine.

Mikaso is owned by a family from Quebec; son, Miguel oversees the hotel and sometimes cooks; he is lots of fun! The upstairs restaurant with terrific views on 3 sides and high-beamed ceiling and fireplace is the center of activity and good wifi connection. Daniela and Helene are delightful hostesses. Service is quick and always pleasant. A rather international menu, very good breakfasts and varied choices for lunch and dinner. It's a friendly atmosphere and we enjoyed talking with a number of guests. We love to meet fellow travelers, and met lovely folks.

Mikaso Hotel was an excellent value. It is just 2 blocks from Escuela Espanola de San Pedro; we received a discount at the hotel for being students at this school. And if you are looking for a fine Spanish school, THIS escuela may be one of the best in Guatemala. We would consider returning to both the hotel and the school our next trip to Guatemala.

Room Tip: Rooms 8,9 and 10 have views and great veranda. We liked 9 which was quiet. 10 has best views but s...

This is a nice hostel. The rooms (even the dorm) are all nice, there is an awesome terrace with great views of the Lake. There is a jacuzzi, a pool table, board games, a kitchen and a good restaurant. There is no TV or WIFI (at least there wasn't when we were there).
From speaking to other people in San Pedro I get the impression that this is the best hostel in San Pedro BUT it's also the most expensive so if you're on a budget you can easily find a room for half the price elsewhere. And there are plenty of choices in touristy San Pedro. The hostel is about a 15-20 minute walk from the main pier in San Pedro so to get here you may prefer to take a tuk tuk or taxi boat to the other closer pier.
Aside from the comparatively higher cost, the only other negative to staying here is with booking tours. The tour agent that the hostel recommends is actually 50% more expensive than all the other agencies in town. Plus the tour agent guy (who wears an official looking white tour rep shirt) is kind of a pest in that he will probably be on your case the minute you arrive at the hostel even coming into the hostel restaurant the first day you arrive pushing tours onto you. Advice: get prices from at least 3 other agencies in town before choosing a tour. San Pedro is actually a very cheap place for doing tours so you may be surprised how cheap it is to go hiking or kayaking etc.
If it wasn't for the annoying tour rep pest I would probably have given this place a 5.

We are happy to know that you enjoyed your stay with us. We hope to see you back again soon. We are very sorry that you were bothered by a guide. I want to specify that we do not have guides offering tours at the hotel. We do promote tours but only at the reception and only if you ask for it. I suppose what happened was that a guide near the hotel saw you walking in and wanted to get a tip from us for bringing you. We will make sure that it does not happen again

When I got here, I literally said this might be the coolest hotel/hostel for 6 dollars a night on the continent. The view and location are absolutely phenomenal, and the price for the dorm room was unbeatable. You also have access to a hot tub, pool table and more in this beautiful little place.

Mikaso is a very clean and inviting place to enjoy the lake. The food is great, the staff friendly and the atmosphere perfect. After our other "adventures" in Guatemala, Mikaso was a much need place to relax. Best views of the lake, we will stay here again.

My husband and I spent a weekend at beautiful Lake Atitlan and in peaceful San Pedro, except for Mikaso Hotel.

Pros:
• Very clean hotel and rooms, extremely basic though.
• Large rooftop terrace with one of the best views of Lake Atitlan.
• Terrace with sun lounge chairs & bar service.

Cons:
• Local women wash their clothes and bathe on the edge of the hotel in the lake very early in the morning and are very loud chatting to each other. We were woken up every morning of our stay!
• The staff forgot to turn on the hot water in our room. We were in a rush and had to take cold showers.
• Unfriendly staff and understaffed. No one was at the reception area and there never was. So you walk in looking for someone to check-in.
• Hotel is difficult to find at night.
• Hotel was empty (maybe low season) so many of the services were not available.
• Kitchen did not open as stated – staff was always late.
• There web site states Wi-Fi but our room did not have it.
• Too expensive for what is offered.

I was very disappointed with Mikaso Hotel. I was expecting a quiet environment for my husband and I to relax and read for a weekend. An American couple was staying in the room next to us and concurred. In addition, the kitchen and staff were very disappointing as well.

Eventually I felt I had to advise the Owner. He though he gave us a discount (much appreciated) I will not go again and do not advise a friend to do so as well.

I've been to Mikaso Hotel in March 2012 with my husband and another couple. I have to admit I chose this hotel because the owners are from Quebec and so am I... but at the end... it was a very nice choice =)

We were welcomed by one of the owners and she did a small tour with us to explain the amenities. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the hotel amenities are great and what about the 2 jacuzzies on the terrasse and roof terrasse with an amazing view on the lake? It was incredible!

The only negative point (and it has been mentioned in other post) is the hotel entrance...well, the path to get to the hotel. We were coming from Santiago so we arrived at another dock than the main one...which is good because this one is closer to the hotel. We took the small path to the hotel but we never saw the sign so we went trough allllll San Pedro before coming back and see the small sign. Then you need to take a little tiny dirty path which DOES NOT smell roses and at the end you see a nice entrance with flowers and beautiful gardens. So to resume...negative point : to find the small path to get to the hotel and the smell on that path (ewww really!!).

We had room 10B...was small, but it was enough for 2 people. Our window was on the lake side so all night we heard the waves like if we were at the beach...so relaxing... but if you are a light sleeper I suggest that you ask for another room =)

The hotel itself is strangely designed but once you got lost 1 or 2 times, you start to get where things are.
