“Only if you look for a really cheap place to stay...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2010

We got one single room with a queen size bed for two and the third person slept in a ´dorm´, well he was the only one there. The single room had a private bathroom if you want to call it that, we certainly did not want to use the shower and tried to avoid using the toilet as well whenever possible. The bathroom for the dorm was even worse because it was raining and there was a leak in the roof so you actually got wet. We only took it because it was cheap (20 quetzales per person in the single room and 25 in the dorm - 2 euros) and we had to get up early in the morning for the volcano tour. They only had a thin blanket and we were really cold during the night. Also its location is not in the main tourist area... so there are definitely nicer places to stay.

I recently came back to Fort Worth Tx from back packing in Guatemala with my girlfriend. We decided to visit Takalik-Abaj which is a mayan center about 30 kilometers from Retalhuleu. Some guatemalan friends told us to look into staying at Hospedaje San Francisco so we gave it a shot.
It is owned by a retired couple from Los Angeles Ca, they are very friendly and the rooms are affordable, clean and confortable.
They have their own inside parking lot and can help you book just about any trip you might want to take. We will definetly recommend this hotel to our friends and family. They do not have a kitchen but with the money you save compared to the other big hotels you can eat like a king at any other restaurant in the city.
Rudy and Betty Archila are the owners.

Hotel San Francisco is located just up the hill from the Santiago dock, a 5 to 10 minute walk from ¨The Vortex¨ (what the San Pedro ex-pat community refers to the strip of bars at the main intersection) near the Pana dock on the other side of the town. The location is ideal-a short walk down the hill to the main trail between the two docks where the majority of the restaurants and Spanish schools are located, but far enough removed from The Vortex and other party spots to be quiet and relatively peaceful and quiet (save for the neighbour who blasted church services every day at 6am from his radio/television).

The hotel itself is spread out among three or four different buildings. I´d recommend checking out several different rooms, as there are some with better views of the lake and amenities. Every room I've seen is garishly decorated, not sparkling clean but clean enough for the price, some have television, some have patios, most have views. The beds are ok. The bathroom wasn't as clean as it could have been, and the agua caliente was inconsistent with both temperature and pressure. As well, I would recommend testing the showers when you check out the room because the quality of the showerheads seem to vary from room to room. In my room, the water was barely hot, but my friend in the room next to mine would regularly get scalding hot showers. As well, just a word of caution about the wiring of these crazy electrical showers so prevalent in Central America: they aren't grounded properly. They seem to defy all logic, kind of like taking a toaster into the shower with you, but when they work, it's absolute gold. Don't touch the showerhead, don't touch any metal when the shower is on (kind of hard as the faucet handle is usually an industrial type and therefore made of metal) and don't [--] with the switch on the showerhead when the water is running or you'll get a minor buzz.

There are 3 kitchens, but all are *ahem* a little rustic, a lot dirty, and ill-equipped. Although the nice thing about there being 3 kitchens is that you can go between the 3 of them if you can't say, find a knife in one of them.

I found this to be a fairly social place when I was staying there as people always seem to be hanging out on their patios and you're always able to find someone willing to have a chat. The family who owns the hotel is large and friendly and there's always someone around if you need help. Another plus is that they're very willing to barter over the price of the room, and the price drops dramatically if you decide to come for a longer stay. As I was in San Pedro to study Spanish, I paid for a month up front and was able to secure a rate

If you're looking for something more luxurious, you can definitely do better in San Pedro, but for the price, location, views and especially the atmosphere, San Francisco is an entirely adequate option.

There's nothing wrong with the hostel overall. Becuase we were a large group we were split between the 3 buildings. There are gathering areas, with plenty of balconies and a rooftop terrace. The view over the lake is astonishing, and spent most of the time we were there taking pictures! the rooms are very basic, as can be expected, but are not small! The showers do, however, leave a lot to be desired!
