The owners built this amazing place by hand and it shows in their excellent service and mind-boggling attention to detail. Thierry and Maria ensure that every guest's experience is as perfect as possible, without hovering. The food is incredible- my highlights were homemade ravioli and fried camembert with carmelized fruit, and of course the daily traditional Guatemala desayuno with beans, plantains, and huevos. I don't know how to describe the incredible sweeping views of Lake Atitlan and do them justice, but travelers who visit will instantly understand when taking in these views through your floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall lake-facing windows or on your private balcony. Or from the restaurant, or the pool, or jetting about the lake. We will be back!

We stayed for 5 nights and didn't want to leave. It was perfect both as a base for exploring the area, and for good old-fashioned R&R - we spent hours happily reading on our balcony, periodically looking up to drink in the scenery.

Pros:
- The scenery is simply breathtaking. On a sunny day I didn't want to do anything but stare at the view.
- Rooms are new, spotless and spacious, each with their own amazing views of the lake and mountains. Each has a large view balcony with adironack-style chairs.
- Property is in a serene location well away from all the hub-ub of the more touristy towns around the lake (may be a con for some, but we found the local ferries easy to use)
- The owners, Thierry and Maria, are excellent hosts and very passionate about the area. Highly recommend getting their advice about where to go/what to see.

Cons:
- While the hotel restaurant is fine, you have essentially no other options for dinner. Not a huge problem, but worth knowing.
- Stairs are rather hard to avoid; if you're mobility-challenged I strongly suggest emailing the owners to talk through options before booking.
- Though I thought it was reasonable value for money, and would happily splurge on it again, it's quite expensive for the area.

This was, by far, the most beautiful and memorable property we stayed at in Guatemala.

This special hotel is notable for its amazing views, the positive flip side to walking up the 400 stone steps, which we did about five times during our stay. The hotel is securely built into the mountainside in such a way that every bedroom has a completely open view of the entire lake, and one can fully enjoy this view from the bed (!), through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors that lead to the balcony. The pool and dining area share this same vantage, by which we viewed lightening storms beyond the distant volcanoes at one nightfall and a spectacular sunset on another. Words cannot adequately describe how special this location truly is.

The hosts are friendly and intimate with the guests - sources of excellent information - and portray a strong commitment to the local community of Tzununa, which is well worth a steep (down) 20 minute walk to the west. We did not sense any threat to our safety anywhere we went around the lake, including this stroll at dusk. The lake water at the hotel private dock is clean and cool, and makes for an enjoyable afternoon swim.

The hotel is classy but not fancy. We enjoyed the bar service on the balcony every afternoon. Given the views, this was just plain luxury. The food was uneven, however. As the owners note in a comment on this website - given their remote location and small size (and surprisingly broad menu), they must freeze and thaw the food for the meals. Thus, the pasta dishes and mushroom steak were quite tasty, but fish selections disappointed. Breakfast was enhanced by strawberry and mango jams - locally prepared, and coffee locally grown and roasted.

Our best lake experience was taking a boat to Panajachel, then a chicken bus up to Solola on Tuesday - the day of the local market. This beat any tourist market we saw elsewhere in Guatemala. We also enjoyed a half-day bike ride, mostly downhill, from a nearby mountaintop down to the lake (Old Town Outfitters). Some of the scenery of this ride through local farmland above the lake was the best we have ever seen anywhere.

My wife and I were in Guatemala for nine days. Two of those days we stayed at Lomas De Tzununa. The food was excellent. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinners there. The owners of the hotel; Thiery and Maria, are great hosts. My wife and I climbed the San Pedro volcanoe and did not get back to the hotel until late one evening. We were starving and the staff kept the resturant open for us to eat. Thanks you. Also, one cannot really explain the views from this hotel, all I can say is, you have to see it for yourself.

Thiery and Maria were very knowledgable of the area and the Mayan tribes surrounding it. It was very interesting to know, how they differ from the white / mestizo (mixed) Guatemalan's. If your going to areas like Lake Atlitan, you can pretty much communicate with the Mayans in Spanish. Both Thiery and Maria had great suggestions of interesting places to visit in the area. Thank you both for adding to our great vacation in Guatemala and we will definately stay at Loma De Tzununa next time. ----Julio and Jess

I've been traveling to Guatemala for almost 20 years; this is the best place I've ever stayed! The rooms are large, cheery, and nicely decorated; at night, there's plenty of light to read by. The views are incredible! The water is hot, the service is friendly and attentive, the food is good, and the owners very engaged and engaging. Looking forward to going back!

My husband and I spent four nights at Lomas de Tzununa and enjoyed every moment there. It was a pleasure to meet Thierry, Maria and Lucas and the people who work with them. Whilst nothing was too much trouble, we were not excessively attended to so were given our own space to enjoy the surroundings. In fact, upon arrival at the dock, someone rushed down to carry BOTH our suitcases up the hill!

The food was delicious and we were sad to see that a negative and quite obviously mistaken review has suggested otherwise. As a Belgian, my husband was interested to test Thierry's 'frites' and was blown away not only by their deliciousness but by the quality of the steak he enjoyed with them!

Our room was simple but clean and comfortable, the main attraction being the spectacular view of San Pedro volcano (worth the climb if you enjoy hiking) as well as the Atitlan and Toliman volcanoes. We travelled quite a bit around the lake and can conclude that Thierry and Maria's careful choice of location for their hotel offers visitors the best view on the lake and a glorious spot to swim in the chilly Lago de Atitlan.

Moreover, Thierry and Maria have been in Guatemala for many years and are knowledgeable resources of this beautiful country so do talk with them about their lives here! Despite the obvious social problems associated with a country emerging from a tumultuous history, Lomas de Tzununa offers a welcoming home away from home from which to explore this, still, stunning part of the country.

It is hard to conjure the words that adequately describe the majestic beauty surrounding It is hard to conjure the words that adequately describe Lomas de Tzununa. Crystal clear, blue waters, verdant cliffs with a patchwork of rocky outcroppings, towering volcanoes and dramatic cloudscapes: these phrases are accurate but not sufficient. Each room is spacious with a balcony overlooking the lake. The bathrooms are large and clean, the closets have ample storage space, and the beds are clean and comfortable. The restaurant staff is friendly (the staff is composed primarily of Mayan people who speak four languages at a minimum), and the food is healthy. My teenage daughters were sufficiently awed by the stunning vistas and never once asked about television or night clubs. Enough said.
