“Outstanding place to relax”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

We were delighted with Lomas de Tzununá, which is advertised accurately as “a view with a room.” The hotel sits on a high bluff overlooking the lake and everywhere there are great views: from the guest rooms, the dining room, even the pool. The rooms are simple, modern and clean, with nice bathrooms. Of course, the main attraction of each room is the balcony and the view of the lake and the surrounding volcanos. It’s a great place to relax. The short and invigorating walk to the village of Tzununá will give you an insight into many aspects of Guatemalan life. The hotel’s owner, Thierry, is Belgian, so the restaurant menu has a European flair as well as offering Guatemalan dishes. The hotel and the restaurant are reasonably priced, the food is excellent, and there is a good assortment of wines. If you’re lucky, Thierry will play guitar in the evening. Make sure the water taxi driver knows to drop you at the hotel’s own dock. There is an intercom at the dock to call the hotel; their staff will carry your bags while you climb the 350 stairs to the hotel. It’s worth it. (You can also arrange to be picked up at the Tzununá town dock and enjoy a ride to the hotel.)

Stayed in a family room and our stay was wonderful. Great views, great kayaking on the lake, good food and a very friendly owner. Yes, there are lots of steps but they are worth it for the panoramic views on top.

We stayed for three days about 3 weeks ago and enjoyed our stay very much. From here it's easy to take the boats at the dock (just wave) and visit all the other small villages around the lake with the benefit of coming back from these hectic villages to the tranquility of Lomas. The food was amazing especially the Belgian fries with homemade mayonnaise ;-) And last but not least, we were very happy with the service given by the owner.

We had three nights more to do in Atitlan and ended here located between Santa Cruz and San Marcos. What a magic place, like a birds nest high up on the cliffs overlooking the entire lake. But you may have to climb the 350 steep steps up from the boat jetty!! If this is a problem, the manager can pick you up by car on a back road. Only 6 duplex, all the same with same views, well fitted, clean and neat with an astonishing view from your private terrace, and from the restaurant terrace as well. Good food and wines, but a bit slow. But here you do not worry about time, just soak in the sweeping view and silence. A bit pricy perhaps, but worth it. Neg sides: a bit isolated, for dinner, restaurant at site is the only option,´cause you do not want to chase hungry dogs along a dirt road in the dark.
The local village Tzununá is only a short walk, runs a simple village life with no much charm but interesting and on the way to San Marcos, an easy walk. Highly recommended hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms are all the same, same views with private terrace.

My girlfriend and I just recently returned from a week long trip through Guatemala. We planned to stay in the Attitlan area for our last few days to unwind from a hectic "see all" between Mayan ruins and hiking volcanoes. Lomas de Tzunun'ya was the perfect place for us to recharge and relax. The rooms are simply put breathtaking. They all face south towards the looming volcanoes of Attitlan and San Pedro. They each have a private balcony where one can enjoy the sun, the quiet, the occasional distant hum of motor boats far below, and beautiful sunrises and sunsets. There is also a swimming pool and pool chairs. You can easily spend a day or two just hanging around the hotel and not wanting to do much of anything else. The main lodge and restaurant are located above the rooms. There is breakfast, lunch, and dinner served by a very friendly staff. The food is excellent. The architecture of the place is something to marvel: mixture of stone and wood built on a cliff side steep enough that it couldn't have been easy to do. The shower and water ran well and the beds were very comfortable, with two beds per room. When you go, make sure to say hi to the nice owners, Thierry and Maria, as well as their friendly cat, Luna, who wanders around the hotel premises.

Room Tip: When coming from Panajachel, make sure to ask to be dropped over at the dock for the hotel and not S...

We stayed a couple of nights at Lomas de Tzununa on a recent trip to Guatemala.

The hotel has absolutely gorgeous views and rooms and bathrooms were very clean with hot water and toilets that allow flushing of the paper (a treat!). The owners are friendly and helpful and the food at the restaurant is fantastic.

For those who want east of other restaurants, or nightlife....the hotel is pretty isolated. You are basically in for the night by the last boat around 5:30 p.m. The price is pretty steep for Guatemala...but for many waking up to a completely unobstructed view of the lake and volcanos may be worth it.

My husband and I started our visit at Lake Atitlan at Lomas de Tzununa and what a start it was! The hotel is situated high above the lake for the most breathtaking view imaginable. It was the perfect retreat to relax and de-stress from "normal life" for a bit. The staff was kind, attentive and helpful. The owners, Thierry & Maria were warm and welcoming which was unexpected and so wonderful - Thierry even played classical guitar for us! We had the most delicious dinners in the restaurant, one warmed by the fire, and the other gazing out into the night sky over Lake Atitlan. I have never heard such peace and quiet from our private deck in the evening. I will never forget the experience and cannot wait to return to this hotel! If you are looking for charm, relaxation, good food, great conversation and an amazing view, Lomas de Tzununa is the place for you!
