“Nice hotel - greatest views and service -just check if location suits your needs.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2012

This hotel has the greatest views of the lake ,but you should be ready to pay a price for it. For us it was not the good place if you had only 2-3 days . Hotel is 20 minutes boat ride from Pana which is the center city and main location there is not way to get by land from Pana - only by boat . So, you take the public boat you will be pushed into A very small boat with crowded locals carrying all their staff and if lake is not calm as it happened very often than expect all your staff to get wet as it happened to us. Our suitcase was soaking wet from the waives that came in the boat. If it rains as it happened to us the day after , and you are at the front of the boat be ready again to get totaly wet as boat is very partly covered . After such an experience we only used a private boat which cost us a lot of money ( about 20$ per each ride compared to 3 $ on the public one.
Than when you reach the pier be ready to clime 350 steps(the hotel staff will carry the bags for you). For us it was a good exercise but I know it's not for all.
There is another option to get down at the village and call the hotel to pick you up which they charge for it a small fee. ( I think charging for such a service is not wise and should be offered as a service)
The rooms are big but no TV or phone in the room so if you need anything from the hotel staff you have to call by mobile or clime again more stairs from our room it was another 70 stairs to the reception and dining room. Amenities in the room are very poor and there was not even shampo in the room.
Be ready that after 17:00 there is no services of boats so you are to stay at the hotel and you can Only have dinner in hotel.
The food is good and owner Tierry is a very nice Belgium guy who is taking care of the guests and even plays in guitar at the evening dinner.
The service of all staff was very good and people are very nice.
So if you want just to relax in the hotel with beautiful views that's a good place.

My family and I stayed two nights at Lomas de Tzunua while we explored Lake Atitlan. We enjoyed it immensely! You will not find a better view of the lake ANYWHERE!!!

A couple things that might be helpful: as the website says, have the boat drop you at the Lomas dock (unless you want to walk with your luggage 20 minutes through town, where no one speaks English to direct you), and then use the service phone to call up to have the staff help you with your bags. It's a LOT of stairs, but it's mainly in the shade, so take your time and take breaks. What's the rush?!? As my wife said, "I would have climbed 3x as many for this view!" If you have health issues or are elderly, this would likely be prohibitive.

The rooms are large, the water is hot and plentiful, and the views are out of this world!

The pool is clean and very cold. Perfect for an afternoon dip.

The staff are VERY sweet and kind. They are indigenous Mayans and speak Spanish fluently as their second language. We spoke only a little Spanish, so communication was a little bit of an issue, but for us it made it even more of an adventure getting outside of our comfort zones.

The food at the restaurant was delicious at every meal. Yum!!!

The owner, Theiry, who is Belgian, speaks several languages fluently, and is around the hotel in the morning and evenings, so if there is anything you need, you can ask him and he can convey it to the staff. He is a wonderful musician who often plays his guitar while you eat your meals. He and his wife have done many wonderful things for the surrounding community (built a library, teaching music lessons, etc.), so it's great to help support all they are doing as well.

It is quiet, which is what my family and I wanted, so if you are looking for hippie night-life and partying, don't come here looking for it. Go to San Pedro instead. If you want a quiet, beautiful place to relax, with amazing views of Lake Atitlan and the volcanoes, friendly staff, and don't mind a little bit of a climb, you can't do better than Lomas.

Room Tip: San Catarina has the best view, imho.

Visited Guatemala in Jan2012 and planned to stay in Lake Atitlan for 2 nights but ended up staying 5 as we enjoyed our stay so much. The location of Lomas de Tsununa is ideal - in-between the main lake side town of Panajachel and other neighbouring villages like Santa Cruz, San Pedro, San Marcos. Staying at Lomas de Tsununa meant you could enjoy the wonderful lake views in a very relaxing and peaceful environment. Rooms are large, clean and very comfortable each with their own private balcony that over looks the lake.
Thierry the owner is very hospitable and more than happy to help plan your day or book transportation.
The food is fresh, tasty and good value. Staff are all very kind and if one of the nice guys by the pier offers to carry your bag up the stairs don't be polite and say "yes please!" Overall a great stay - happily go back next time we're in Guate!

Room Tip: Say YES if someone offers to carry your bag up the stairs!

The roof of the world. For sure the best view you can get on the lake. We actually booked for 1 night and spent a week being under the charm of that magical place. Bungalows are very confortable with sober decoration. The hosts are extremely friendly and helpful for local information; A must.

At first glance, this hotel may seem bare bones, lacking many of the ammenities that other hotels offer. However, if one just pays attention to what is advertised on their website, there should be no surprises and the hotel will prove to be a fantastic experience.

If you are the like so many, working day to day, not living with an Out of This World view, constantly around television, internet, email, and other daily stresses, this place will take you away from it all. The view is to die for and something that makes this hotel what it is. it is relaxation, a way to truly get away, a way to admire nature's beauty, and a place to rest.

Thierry, the Owner of the hotel, is a great host. Many nights you will find him playing guitar in the dining room/restaurant. He is very helpful and the type of person who clearly cares about where he lives, the community he lives in, and the people who are coming to share in this experience.

Now, having said all of that it is important to recognize that this hotel is very simple. It offers rooms without television, no internet of any type in the rooms, the basics needed. They could use better soap and bathroom products and, in my personal opinion, a bit of variety in the restaurant menu, and lastly a way to communicate from the room to the staff if something is needed. Please don't get me wrong, what they do have on the menu is very good and simple. It would just add to the experience if the restaurant was a part of that "getting away" experience.

Don't forget that there is an option so that you do not have to make the climb of 300+ steps to get to the hotel. I liked this experience but it is not something most will enjoy doing multiple times a day if they intend on going and coming (something I do not recommend). They will pick you up at the Tzunana Pier if you let them know.

I recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a phenomenal view, a place to get away to relax in the simplest of ways (reading, meditating, pool, nice conversation, etc). If you are looking for an experience that involves all of the amenities often expected in vacation hotels, this may not be the place for you. I would absolutely return to relax, because the owner's and staff are great, and because the VIEW IS UNREAL!
