Hotel el Arca de Noe
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 16, 2011

We did not stay at el Arca but we ate here on our last evening and wished we had more evenings! The meal was excellent and would not have disgraced any major restaurant metropolis. A five course menu included: anchovy butter on apple with dried guava; banana soup (this was the most amazing soup I have ever eaten and we all had second helpings); parmesan tart; pork tenderloin in a fig sauce with couscous and broccoli (again, delicious) and peaches poached in Limoncella. Absolutely fantastic. Food is a bit of an obsession with us and we have eaten in many top restaurants around the world and the soup in particular is going in to our Top 5 dishes ever. The dinner costs for Q75 plus 10% which is good value for Santa Cruz - our hotel charged Q90 for a dinner and Isla Verde where we ate the previous evening charges Q100. The latter was good but no where near this class.

Arc de Noe also sells wine at reasonable (for Guatemala) prices.

Dinner is eaten family style which I am not normally crazy about but we enjoyed he company of a family from Atlanta and a couple from Montreal and hope they enjoyed our company too! The food would have been worth it even if the company hadn't been so pleasant. The ambiance of the simple room is also lovely - with candles and music.

Basically we had a $300 plus dining experience for around $35. Cant say fairer than that really.

What can I say.......this was truly a unique experience, and I sooooo wish we could have stayed longer. Santa Cruz is such a relaxed spot. We didn't stay here, but did go for dinner. All local produce and a lot from the Arca's garden. A five course delight. This place is a must. Don't miss it.

Didn't stay at the hotel but instead had several meals at the property. Great food, great prices, great drink. One day, Anne had made a beautiful chocolate (Austrian?) cake...YUMMY!!! She also offered great travel suggestions for various lake visits.

Very gracious hosts, and Anna's dinners are wonderful. The rustic cabin was a bit crude, but spacious and pleasant. The problem is a serious lack of hot water and totally inadequate water pressure.

I was here in July. It's a very nice place to just hang out for a few days. It's quiet, the room was comfortable, and the service was very good. The food is excellent!

The place is very environmentally minded, which has its drawbacks. The solar-heated shower never got hot, but there is a communal gas-heated shower on the property which was excellent. And there's only minimal lighting at night, even in the common area.

I stayed at the Arca a couple of weeks ago. It was a return visit for me, as I stayed there 15 years ago. Back then, it was the only place like it on Atitlan, but I see one or two more hotels now that are operating the same model. It can be a little expensive by Guatemalan backpacking standards, but you'll find your stay there to be totally relaxing, safe, and rejuvinating. The food is spectacular, which is a relief after several days of beans, eggs, and tortillas. You can even eat the salads, as they are washed in filtered water. The owners are frequently away, and the place is run by two or three locals, who only speak Spanish. They are extremely helpful and polite. Bear one thing in mind about the Arca, and that it is pretty isolated. This is actually what makes it a plus. Kick back. Relax. Swim in the lake. Walk the lake footpath. If I ever have a nervous breakdown, I know the perfect place to recover!

Lived in the capital for 4 years and Arca de Noe is by far our favorite place to stay on weekend escapes to Atitlan. The view of the volcanoes and sunset/sunrise is spectacular, the water is more accessable for swimming than most other spots around the lake, the gardens are beautiful and constantly in bloom, the beginning of the path that carries you around the slopes of the lake to San Marcos (highly recommended) is close by, the activity of kids running around and boats carring all kinds of stuff (marimbas, bags of potatoes, etc) up the hill to the actual pueblo of Santa Cruz is facinating, the communal dinners are delicious and the easy-going hospitality of Marc and Stefanie (the high season managers) and the local girls who work there let you relax and enjoy the view from the comfort of your hammock. Accomodation is rustic (solar electricity/showers & fussy toilets) but it is more environmentaly sound ... enabling you to enjoy the fantastic showing of stars at night and swimming in the relatively clean lake. Highly recommended!
