“An Exquisite Treehouse for Adults!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2014

La Fortuna at Lake Atitlan is unlike any other place I've ever stayed. Every detail of this gorgeous property was unique and embraced the amazing setting of the location. Greeted by a warm, smiling staff, a couple of friendly dogs, a cocktail and a dip in a hot tub by a fireplace overlooking the lake-- I couldn't dream up a more perfect place.

I stayed alone in bungalow 3 (traveling with a group of friends) and felt completely relaxed- the bed was so comfortable and there was even an outdoor loft that i climbed into and read, enjoying the views and the breeze in the privacy of my own "treehouse".

The outdoor bathroom and shower was my favorite part, showering under the stars and surrounded by trees and the beautiful design of the space. I felt so cared for, having both privacy and comfort.

The food was amazing and the staff was over the top helpful- carrying my heavy bags up and down the stairs, making sure my water was refilled, that I had clean towels and making sure everything easy for me. Not only that- Kat and Steve, the owners, have incredible knowledge of the area and made it easy to plan a perfect trip around the lake and beyond.

If you want an experience that bridges eco-luxury to an authentic experience with Guatemala, then stay at La Fotuna at Lake Atitlan.

Our stay at La Fortuna was a truly amazing experience in every aspect. We will never forget waking up to the sunrise over the water, hiking between nearby villages, or sipping cocktails in the wood fired hot tub. The hospitality provided by Steve, Kat, and staff was top notch and the meals were delicious! Lake Atitlan is a magical destination and La Fortuna is the place to experience it!

We managed to book a two night stay at La Fortuna through booking.com with only a few weeks notice for our wedding anniversary. We wanted to be away from the hustle and noise of Pana for a few nights and that's exactly what we got. A heads up - there is some building work going on and during the day you will hear some drilling and hammering, but it's not a full scale construction site! Rather, its really intriguing to see the local workers build without the use of heavy lifting equipment and the new reception area will be a welcome addition to the hotel. We were in bungalow one and it was a great place - fresh fruit, water and nuts on our arrival and one of the biggest and comfiest beds I've slept in in a long time. Ok, it's a little disconcerting what with the outdoor shower and toilet initially, but once I scoured the treelines and convinced myself no-one was out there spying, I managed to get over my shyness! Those with mobility issues may not manage to scoot up the ladder to the mezzanine level where the view is fantastic. In fact those over 40 may struggle, cos I certainly did! The food was fantastic, two choices for mains in the evening and about half dozen for breakfast - all served by the fantastic friendly local staff. One of our highlights was eating dinner on our deck watching the fireflies in the trees with the lights of San Antonio in the distance. The outdoor coal fired hot tub was the other..

We will definitely return to this little eco haven soon! Book it while you can, you will have no regrets.

Room Tip: Bungalow one has the best views

I visited Guatemala for the second time in January, staying in Antigua, Guatemala City and Lake Atitlan and was fortunate to be hosted by owner/operators, Steve and Katharine Kmack when an opening came available in late January.
The loving care and thoughtful planning in the execution and design of La Fortuna is evident from the moment you arrive. Each unit is located to give the impression that you are completely secluded and the craftsmanship and detail displayed in the construction of the buildings evidences the meticulous care taken in implementation of their design. This attention to detail is complemented by the service that Steve and Kat provided me as their guest, with drinks delivered to my room and the outstanding food preparation and presentation.
In keeping with their desire provide guests with a great experience, the hosts gave excellent recommendations for experiences in the various villages round the lake and when ready to move on they arranged reliable, trustworthy transportation to my next destination.
I cannot recommend this eco lodge or its owners highly enough. I will find a way back and if you are lucky enough to find an open date, you too will discover what I did and much more than I able to include in this review.

Don't read the reviews to decide IF you want to stay at La Fortuna-rather, read to gain an understanding of the types of experiences you can have and make decisions about how long an in which bungalo you want to stay! My husband and I stayed at La Fortuna as part of our honeymoon adventure to Guatemala. Kat and Steve helped in making sure the experience far exceeded our expectations. We knew that we had found a special place from our initial emails with Kat and Steve to solidify dates for our trip and subsequent communications on how to get to La Fortuna from the airport-their goal to ensure we had an outstanding honeymoon was clear from the start. It only got better upon our arrival. Previous reviews will speak to the awe of the grounds and the bungalos-we are in full agreement. We stayed in bungalo 1 and it was perfect. We appreciated being tucked away when we wanted to, but also getting to meet and interact with other guests by conversations in the hot tub (which is AMAZING) or Kat & Steve's help in arranging transportation for day trips (ex: ChiChi market). Kat & Steve were personable and we cannot thank them enough for helping us narrow a list of activities while we were there and also suggesting a few that were not on our list but ended up being top highlights of our trip. Then there is the food. We read a review that said one thing they would have done differently is to eat dinner at La Fortuna every night-we took this recommendation and were not sorry. Steve is an AMAZING chef. His is creative with food and the flavors....we went through serious withdrawl upon returning home! Being able to eat every night on our porch with the sounds of nature and views of villages across the lake was pefect for creating the privacy and intimacy of meals that we wanted. The wine selection was also fantastic. So summary-awesome place for a honeymoon. Kat & Steve, thank you so very much for all you did to help us create an unforgetable trip. We will be back to Guatemala an La Fortuna in the future for sure!

Room Tip: We stayed in bungalo 1 and it was perfect. It's not as tucked away as bungalo 2 (the other suite...

We arrived after dark by shuttle boat to be greeted by the owner Steve waiting at the dock to help us with our bags and to guide us by lantern to our cabin (nice first impression for service) . We could not see the gardens or appreciate the beautiful views yet in the dark. However our cabin was everything we expected and more! After 10 days on the road travelling through Gautamala, this was the most comfortable bed we had experienced. A huge king bed with elegant linen and a beautiful canopy made us feel like a king and queen. The private hot tub in the back of the cabin was a nice treat! In the morning we awoke early to a beautiful lake volcano view that felt like we were in a place of paradise. We walked the gardens and just soaked up the beauty. Our selected breakfast arrived delivered with fresh local coffee everything was perfect. After breakfast we hiked up the ridge-line to the lookout point. The owners dogs joined us guiding us up the trail. At the top I had prepared a poem and brought a ring to propose marriage to my sweetie. It was the perfect place. Full of adventure that my sweetie loves and a most memorable view! And so it was meant to be. We will always remember our little piece of paradise. This place surely lives up to its name as felt very fortunate to stay. We look forward to returning to visit the owners Kat and Steve and their dogs. Lots of Love! Doug and Shelley from Canada

Room Tip: Allow enough time to hike, swim and take in the beauty!

What a beautiful and peaceful place La Fortuna is. The outdoor bathtub and hottub were heavenly, the rooms/suites original, exotic and ultra comfortable. The hosts and all the staff working there will make your stay. The food was delightful too! The fact that it sits in a private cove and isolated makes it even more enjoyable for the right kind of people that appreciate being in nature and away from the bustle. Try a kayak paddle on the lake early in the morning, totally worth it. A wonderful place!
