the boardwalk from the dock in Santa Cruz to Los Elementos is one of the most memorable experiences of staying in Santa Cruz. but they came to the town dock to pick us up for our 3-village tour. We were joined by another American couple (you meet people from all over the world here), and set off for the first village, San Marcos.. popular with backpackers, yoga and meditation practitioners.
The second village, San Juan, is known for its textile industry and the women's cooperative that runs it. We spent a lot of time here, browsing the artwork, buying beautiful goods, and lazing through a lunch.
Third town, Santiago, was such a contrast. It is more bustling, the macho town across the lake from demure San Juan. Memories of the civil war run deep here, and our guide Alex really brought it to life for us.
In fact, we have to really recommend Alex, he was a fantastic guide for the day. He is a proud, passionate ambassador of his culture, he was funny and took good care of us.
Lee and Elaine have a gorgeous place near the end of the boardwalk. We didn't stay there, as they were booked for a wedding. They were gracious hosts nonetheless, and they were busy with hikes and kayaking adventures the next day. I was very pleased with my experience with Los Elementos.
