My husband and I went to Lake Atitlan on our honeymoon. We were referred to Los Elementos by family back home who had come to the area before. They had actually arranged a tour without telling us!
When they suggested we go talk to Lee, we did so. We didn't know about the tour, so we had no expectations, we were just along for the ride at first. But, we were blown away by the experience. As soon as they knew who we were, we were immediately whisked off to San Pedro from Santa Cruz, shuttle boat at the ready.
15 minutes later, we stepped off the boat into a brand new adventure. There, we met Anita, our guide, a native who knows all of the nooks and crannies of the volcanic mountainside town, and adjoining San Juan.
Anita is an intelligent young lady well versed in the local dialects as well as English. After fumbling over our mediocre Spanish most of the week, it was refreshing to see a town and bounce questions off of a local; all the color, history, and culture with personal stories as icing on the cake. It seemed like she knew everyone and was quite literally introducing us to her world.
We met the ladies at her weaving co-op. They try to maintain and preserve the traditional materials and methods of back strap weaving. Simply beautiful! At another co-op, we got to see how coffee is processed after harvesting. Cooperativa la Voz supports local families who harvest the organic coffee cherries and has the facility to clean, sort, roast, and grind all of the beans. Finish that off with a sample at the end and you're left enlightened and ready for what's next.
We pored over and purchased art, saw 300 year old cathedrals, bounced around in a tuk tuk, and ate at a local "hole in the wall". It was an outstanding experience and only wish I had more pictures to remember every laugh!
