La Casa Rosa Hotel
Reviewed April 2, 2012

A fellow traveler we met on our way to lake atitlan recommended case rosa to us. We looked it up online and saw there was wifi, yoga, beautiful rooms and gardens, so we called and made a reservation. we arrived the next day and were greeted by dona rosa who showed us our garden bungalow. the garden and location of casa rosa are very beautiful, but a the bungalow was a bit dirty (spiderwebs everywhere and trash that dona rosa removed once we entered). the linens of the bed were very old and had so much pilling that it was a little uncomfortable. it just didn't feel clean. neither did the bathroom.
there also was no wifi. we were the only guests at the time, which felt a little lonely. the breakfast we ate there once was good, but we soon discovered that you could have very lively family style dinners and nice breakfasts at the iguana perdida right next door. at iguana perdida the staff also offered tons of help and gave us tips on what to do, asked us how our day was and what we did or were planning to do the next day. it just made it that much more obvious that the atmosphere at dona rosa was very different. it felt deserted and while dona rosa was always friendly, she never engaged in a conversation. the second day we met her daughter, who was a little harsh (always made comments about us paying so we won't run away without paying....which i find a little weird. as a guest i do not want to be passive aggressively accused of that without any reason). also there was obviously some friction between daughter and mother, overall we just felt a little like unwanted house guests in someones private home. there also wasn't any yoga, but they do have mats and a patio where you can practice by yourself. and as i said, the garden is really beautiful. but unfortunately i would not recommend this hotel.

Great hotel, great owners, great views! La Casa Rosa is a very nice and relaxing hotel. Interestingly it is owned by a Guatemalan woman which makes it even more special!

We had a very nice stay at La Casa Rosa for about 2.5 days. We loved the bungalo we stayed in, and the patio area is great. Breakfast and happy hour are enjoyable. Beautiful location and nearby views offer unforgettable experience. Make sure you visit the small Santa Cruz town up the hill (you can take a 3-wheeler taxi if the walk is too strenuous), for the most authentic local experience.

La Casa Rosa has a gorgeous patio area right on the water and every night they have a happy hour special that is a great deal. It's just one drink option per night but we tried a few of them while we were there and were always impressed at how well made they were. I even discovered a new favorite cocktail there. There are a very limited number of places in Santa Cruz to eat/drink. Casa Rose was very hospital and saved us from going without dinner when we got into Santa Cruz too late to eat anywhere else - they were closing down but still happily made us a great meal.
Summary - great drinks at good prices and really nice folks!

This is the third year in a row that my wife and I have stayed at Casa Rosa for a week at Christmas. We just love the quiet family atmosphere and Dona Rosa's hospitality. It is a small hotel with a splendid tropical garden where you can relax in the hammoc catching up on your reading, as I read Hundred Years of Solitude. There is nothing like waking up with the view of hummingbirds in the trees, the lake spread out right in front of you and the impressive volcanoes right across from the lake. This year Rosa's daughter Nicole has added a very beautiful outdoor cafe right on the lake where you can sip your morning coffee watching the lake wake up before your morning swim off the dock. Santa Cruz is the closest of the villages to Panajachel, has great hiking paths in the hills. My wife and I hiked several times over the hill to Jaibalito and had lunch there at the Posada Jaibalito, another gem run by a German with a fabulous beard who makes his own bread and coffee.
I cannot say too many positive things about Casa Rosa, check out their website.
As I am back here in the freezing cold, I only wished I had stayed there for another week.

Room Tip: rooms without bath have it right down the hallway i like the rooms upstairs with view of the garden
