“Amazing and unexpected scenery”
Reviewed June 3, 2014

During this trip I stayed at both Isla Verde and Casa del Mundo due to the availability of each. They are about a 15 minute walk from each other, though not visible to each other. The combination was perfect for me as a solo traveler:

Isla Verde is a place I imagine going back to with my brother and sister. Lots of hammock and lounge areas, a very island-chill vibe, wonderful fresh food overlooking the water. I stayed in one of the apartments, and while it was beautifully decorated (fabrics, carved wood, outdoor porch with day bed, hanging orchids and hummingbirds, great view), it was very noisy, being located right on the walkway that everyone took to their tukuls at night.

Casa del Mundo was one of the more unique places I've stayed in all my travels. It caters to an older crowd--average age when I was there was maybe 50 years old. The food was good, especially breakfast, and the family-style dinner made for some interesting conversation. Being even only slightly higher up than Isla Verde in elevation was like being in a whole new world-verdent pine tress, beautiful smells, and supremely incredible views. There was a larger variety of "relaxation spots" to explore here. The drawback for some might be that it is an incredibly steep/long walk from the water. If you are not fit or have mobility problems a different option might be best.

I would happily stay at either place again, though at Isla Verde choosing a slightly removed tukul.

I've noticed someone put a 'fake' review that negatively impacts La Casa Del Mundo on TripAdvisor. First of all I've stayed here many times, and continue to do so. The hotel will accept credit cards if you contact Ivan (the owner) and make arrangements but the hotel prefers cash like most hotels due that its simpler to handle and easier process. Staff including owner Ivan will give anyone information where to go and see on Lake Atitlan, they will make all the arrangements too. Furniture is beautifully accommodating, and concierge and staff is the very best anywhere in Guatemala. What's really EXCELLENT is that in the evenings they have communal dinners whereby you sit at a table with other hotel guests, share your experiences, get to meet people from around the world. If you're looking for a well operated hotel, run by staff and people who care about your stay, which offer superior service, and rooms with the best view in the world you will want to stay at La Casa Del Mundo.

A unique hotel with a great staff. The grounds and rooms are beautiful and the views of the lake and volcanos are amazing. Note on getting there: When you arrive in Pana, go to the dock and take a public water taxi. Ask to be dropped at casa del mundo. It shouldn't cost more than 25Q.

My wife and I just spent several days at La Casa del Mundo for our honeymoon, and we had an absolutely amazing time. The views of Lake Atitlan are spectacular, the service and food were excellent, our room felt like it was suspended over the water, and the owners even treated us to a bottle of wine when they found out we'd just been married. You can arrange for a massage in your own room, or a private shuttle anywhere on the lake. It's never been so hard to leave a place. Of course, if you're looking for a bar scene or crowds, this is not the place. Here you'll find seclusion, walking access to a couple local villages, easy boat access to nearby towns from the dock, countless terraces with gorgeous views of the lake, and a general feeling of being someplace truly special. At the same time, you likely won't be alone. Dinners are done family style, so you'll be sharing a table with other guests from around the world. We had lively conservations that often extended late into the evening with wine down by the water (or in the incredible hot tub). Also, if you're worried about a language barrier, most of the main staff are fluent in English and Spanish, and everything is so easy, and everyone so accommodating. We will be back as soon as we can get there.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 13, which is just above the dining area (and has the fewest steps up from the wate...

We spent one night here after three nights in Panajachel before leaving the Lake Atitlan area. This is a wonderful place but we had a few problems with our reservation, which we had made months ago. We booked three rooms and as most have stated, there are between 100 & 200 steps to get to the rooms. We had rooms 10, 11 & 12 which are quite high up. They were all beautiful, each with private bathroom and balcony. It is quite a hike if you need to go back to the lobby/restaurant or further below to the dock or hot tub area. We had ordered our dinner from the website and also reserved the hot tub, neither of which appeared to have been reviewed prior to our arrival. We actually had some problems with the hot tub as it takes 6 or so hours to heat so was not even started when we arrived late afternoon. It rained that evening so we felt between the weather, the time and the darkness with steps to get to it, we wouldn't use it. We still had to pay for it (USD 30) which is quite a bit in relation to the room rates. In the end, they made an attempt to warm it up the next morning so we could use it before leaving. When you go out in the evening you need to use a flashlight and you have to go outside to go to any room or anywhere else so you do need to be prepared to go up and down stairs several times. There is no way to reach the staff from your room so if you needed assistance, you would need to go back downstairs to find someone. Dinner was an excellent fuor course meal at a long common table. They did cook us what we had ordered with the reservation. I felt the service could have been better at the reception and dealing with our few issues. It is a spectacular property and the views and sitting areas are wonderful. Just FYI, we paid Q15 per person for each way from Panajachel to the hotel's private dock but each time they started at Q25. Drink prices were very reasonable (wine/beer) for an exclusive hotel such as this.

Room Tip: You may want to ask for a room that has windows that can remain open but are inaccessible for securi...

Hugging the side of the mountain on the edge of the lake, near Pana, La Casa del Mundo is one of the nicest places to stay on Lago de Atitlan. The stone buildings are perched on hillside rising up from the docks. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and each room has beautiful views. There are nice look-outs and nooks to simply sit and read or to admire the ever changing view. There are also some nice walks one can take to Santa Cruz or Jaibalito. Don't miss the chance to have them "fire up" the hot tub, a great way to enjoy the stars. Food was also excellent, served family style.

Room Tip: If you have trouble climbing stairs, look for rooms close to the main lobby and dining area. The ro...

Our family of 5 came to La Casa del Mundo near the end of a long holiday in Guatemala where we traipsed across the countryside and back again. As such it was a welcome relief to have a place where we were able to just sit, sip a glass of wine, pop into the water for a swim, and enjoy the lovely views. The steps to the rooms are very steep (about 100 steps to our room in cabin 18), but the climb is what gets you your view.

The hotel is isolated and you'll rely on boat transport to get anywhere at all (though you CAN access it via roads, it would take a long time and is not advisable). This isolation offers tranquility but also a scarcity of dining options.

The food is good -- nothing truly amazing overly authentic, but really quite good. Generally we would have our breakfast and dinner at the lodge and head to a local village (go to San Marcos at the Nature Reserve and jump off of the rocks ... very fun!) for lunch.

The rooms are clean (except for a small (non-venomous) scorpion that kept wanting to come in ... we found him under the dresser and shoo'ed him out twice). The only downside to the rooms is that the solid wall construction makes noise travel pretty easily, so if you are a light sleeper consider bringing earplugs.

This is a lovely place and we'll come back if we find ourselves in Guatemala again.
