“Ideal location, beachfront, and great hosts. And pet-friendly!”

Stayed here to kick off 2017, and i'm so glad I did. Muchos gracias to La Joyita!!

Vistas of the bay are absolutely stunning...especially while swinging in a hammock.
Location is unparalleled. 15mins from the "Drake Bay Airport", and 15 minutes to the centre of Drake Bay.
The cabina is well-appointed with a fridge, stove and oven, and any and all cooking supplies you'll ever need.

The contact for the property, Alexis, was outstanding to have as someone to connect with before - and during - the trip. Her knowledge of Drake Bay, and how to arrange transportation, tours, etc was incredible. I can honestly say that her correspondence makes you feel at ease. From what to pack ("sunscreen, bathing suits, a hat, and water. THAT'S IT!"), to what to expect in Drake Bay, she was a pleasure to deal with.

There are a handful of dogs that come by the property all the time...one of which was Alexis's dog from Canada. They're all so cute, and are the sweetest pups you'll ever want to meet.

I will recommend La Joyita to any and all visitors to Drake Bay!

Thank you so much for this lovely review! We are so happy you enjoyed your stay at La Joyita - and the furry friends who have become permanent fixtures! The hammock views and seaside breezes are pretty unbeatable, and we are very glad you appreciated the fully equipped kitchen! We hope you will return to Drake Bay, and perhaps even La Joyita - the dogs are waiting!

“Beautiful beach, well-appointed cabina, excellent hospitality!”

Tropical vacation dream come true! My partner and I spent 10 wonderful days at La Joyita. Lovely cabin was clean and comfortable. We prepared several delicious meals in the bright and open kitchen and enjoyed relaxing on the covered porch. A clean, spacious shower, on-demand hot water and good water pressure were welcome luxuries. The sandy beach, great for swimming, is steps away. There is also a nice cool lagoon right next to the beach, providing shade and a place to dunk after playing in the ocean waves. We swam here nearly every day.
The hosts were friendly and helpful. They arranged several tours for us including zip line canopy tour, snorkeling at Cano Island and hiking in the national park. They also had good suggestions for where to eat in town. It was about a 15 minute walk to town where there are several restaurants, a couple grocery stores, fruit stand, gear rental and tour agencies.
We had both relaxation and adventure and the cabin was a pleasant home-base for our time in Drake Bay

“La Joyita”
Reviewed February 6, 2016 for a stay in January 2016

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at La Joyita for 5 days. The beach below this property is a true gem: some of the warmest water I have ever swam in, with beautiful jungle views. The neighboring lagoon and fresh water stream was one of my favorite parts -- so nice to stand in the cool, fresh water on a hot day or after a long walk. The craftsmanship of the cabin was very impressive and, over all, I feel that Pete and Alexis's little rental offers really good value for this area.

This cabin is good for:
An individual or couple who want a less touristy experience of the Drake Bay area.
People who love swimming beachside in warm, tropical oceans.
Anyone who plans on diving with Cano Divers (next door)
People who plan to cook most of their own meals.
Visitors who want to relax on their own, come to Drake Bay for a longer stay, or do a mix of tours and solo activities.

The plus side of this cabin's location is that it is quieter and we often had the beach all to ourselves. The downside is that groceries and most tours are in town, and this property is a 20-30min hike from the center of Agujitas. With that said, I don't think this rental would be a good fit for someone who plans on eating out every evening or going on tours every day. We are active hikers and enjoyed the feeling of going back in time that came with traversing the area's dirt roads on foot. It was also a great way to spot wild-life! (We observed macaws, toucans, and various frogs & lizards). For those less interested in hoofing it, quads and car taxis are available, but we found those services pretty over priced.

In terms of the property, I did find the cabin less private than I had expected. I think the listing description of a "private hillside" led me to expect a greater feeling of isolation than what this property actually delivers. The grounds are beautiful and park like, with bright green grass and tropical trees, but the main house was in clear view from the cabin's front porch and one of the bedroom windows. Of course, if you pivot slightly, the front porch also provides a beautiful view of the green hillside sloping to the ocean. Once landscaping fills in, La Joyita will be much more shielded from the road and other near-by buildings, which I think will help the cabin feel more private.

Peter and Alexis were helpful and friendly in a laid back, not over bearing way.
We enjoyed learning more about the region's history and Peter was an amazing resource, with stories of what Drake was like before the roads were developed and the lodges sprang up. It is clear that this property is a labor of love for Peter and his family; from the foot washing station to the custom furniture, it is clear much thought has gone into the landscaping and buildings. We would be happy to stay here again if we ever come back to Drake Bay.

Liked best: A swimmable beach surrounded by jungle is hard to beat
Liked least: I feel like more thorough information of what to expect in Agujitas would have been helpful. For instance, there is no ATM or bank in town but many activities/services require cash payment.

Thank you for your detailed review, we are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at La Joyita!

The warm Pacific waters are pretty phenomenal and we are also big fans of the near-private and gentle beach we have been blessed with. Of course the ability to rinse off the salt in cool, jungle river waters is a wonderful bonus. Catching the sunset from the cabina porch is pretty fantastic and there are very few places in Drake Bay that boast a similar view. We are delighted that you appreciate the 'labour of love” that has gone into our property and buildings, we have been working on this place since the early 1990s and it is nice to see our efforts appreciated.

There are a couple of inaccuracies in your review that I would like to clarify. Should you book any standard Drake Bay tour (Caño Island, Corcovado National Park, Canopy Zip Lining, Horseback Riding, etc) while staying at La Joyita, transfer from (and back to) the cabina is included. The walking tour which you elected to do is a unique, non-advertised tour taking place on the edge of Corcovado National Park with access located well outside of the village, in Los Planes (30 minute car ride away). It is not advertised to the public and is conducted by a reclusive man who lives off the grid and has no way of offering transportation. As it is not a typical tour, arranging it requires a lot of effort (just getting in touch with this man requires a 3 person phone/marine radio bridge). We were able to arrange this tour for you AND find someone willing to do a private taxi service, but their price of $20 (for a half hour ride across rivers and over steep terrain) was not something you were willing to pay. Truth be told, even had you paid a return taxi fare, the entire day would still have cost you two less than any other Drake Bay tour costs 1 person. I suppose cost is relative, right? Case in point - many of our guests pay $20 for a taxi ride from La Joyita into Drake Bay/Agujitas and back for a grocery run.

The main house, while obstructively visible from the front porch of La Joyita thanks to palm trees, heliconia bushes and hibiscus hedges, is not easily visible from La Joyita’s bedroom. The bedroom is actually located on the opposite side of the cabina from the house. There are 3 windows in the bedroom and they face the ocean, the cabina driveway and the road (or more accurately, the hedges planted between the road and the cabina’s backyard). If one tries to view the house from the cabina’s bedroom it is possible, although the cabina’s building aspect was created to view the ocean, and not the house. The house is only visible from the bedroom window if one is within 12 inches of the window and looks left. The vast majority of accommodations in Drake Bay do not provide the same level of privacy and independence as La Joyita does - this is why we built it the way we did.

We do appreciate your feedback, and it is nice to see things from someone else’s perspective; we thank you for your review and your patronage.

This place is unbelievable. The views are phenomenal, the beach is gorgeous and quiet - I went for a couple of long walks and didn't see another person. The ocean is warm and gentle, perfect for swimming and there is a fresh, cool water lagoon right there for rinsing off. It's located just outside of the main hub of Drake Bay's village (Agujitas) so it's quieter but close enough that a 15 minute walk or 2 minute drive gets you to the restaurants and stores.
The cabin itself is stunning. Local hardwoods in amazing shades of purple and deep mahoganies give a warm feeling to the interior and there are so many cool touches - you can really tell it was a project of art and love. Pete, the owner, is truly talented and it's apparent in the design and some of the additions to the cabin - the light over the kitchen sink is made of a large piece of driftwood, the little breakfast table inside was crafted from a piece of fallen tree, the bathroom has some cute little fish tiles, etc etc.
The kitchen is fully equipped (oven, blender, toaster, etc), all of the taps have hot water (I have never seen that before in Costa Rica), the covered porch has a lovely hammock for relaxing and a great foot bath to cut down on beach sand inside, the bedroom is comfortable and has nice little touches (bedside reading lamps, clothes rack/shelves, lock box for valuables, great mattress, etc).
Peter and his daughter are awesome at helping you out if you need it - or leaving you alone if you'd rather that. They have been in the area for ages so are quite knowledgeable and can arrange any tour you've heard of (and suggest others that you probably haven't heard of) plus arrange taxis for groceries if you don't want to walk, suggest places for dinner/drinks, can tell you about hikes/beaches you can visit on your own, etc etc. I really cannot say enough wonderful things about this place! I can't wait to go back

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a couple nights during our stay in Drake's Bay. This exquisite wood crafted cottage is located right on beautifully landscaped beach front property. The cottage is absolutely stunning and was quick to feel like home. The place was clean and well maintained. After having been traveling around Costa Rica for a while it was such a nice treat to stay in such a nice place and have the luxury of a hot shower again. The view from your front door is breathtaking and very remote. I have nothing but nice things to say. I would highly recommend this cottage.

Thank you for this lovely review! We are so happy you were able to enjoy the remoteness and beauty that Drake Bay has to offer, and that you did so in our lovely La Joyita. Pete fondly recalls meeting you on the boat ride in and enjoying your company. On your next visit to Osa, you will have to come by to see the improvements and additions (BBQ, hammocks, more gardens, etc) since your stay with us 2 years ago - and say hi to Rosie, of course, who is still a vibrant part of our family! Thanks again for your kind words.

“Amazing place to stay”

My girlfriend and I stayed at Pete's beautiful house in Drake Bay for 3 nights over New Year's eve and couldn't give a higher recommendation.

The entire place is beautifully crafted from dark wood, the bed is incredibly comfortable, the kitchen is fully stocked to cook meals and the bathroom was very nice. You can tell this place was built out of love with a lot of attention to detail.

Drake Bay is remote and exactly what we wanted, an opportunity to unwind and truly relax. The drive to the house was fun (make sure you have a 4x4 car). You will drive through shallow streams and an hour or so of winding dirt roads (all part of the adventure). The house is right on an amazing beach, perfect for lounging all day. There are some restaurants and a couple small grocery stores in town, we opted to cook most meals at the house and just relax at the house all day. The town itself is very low key and safe.

I think my favorite part of our stay was laying in the hammock during sunset and watching the fireflies start to come out. This place is truly special. If you are looking to go off the beaten path and find a piece of paradise, look no further.

Thank you so much for the glowing review - and for being such fantastic guests! We are delighted to hear your remarks regarding the care and artistry Pete put into the design and construction of La Joyita.
