Our very sincere thank you to Marleny, Adrian and the Drake Bay Wilderness team for sharing their home in paradise with us. The fact that it is an hour long boat ride - departing from Sierpe town, is the tip to prepare oneself mentally for the adventure into a remaining remote part of Costa Rica. Our stay at Drake Bay Wilderness Resort was the last leg and absolute highlight of our holiday. The visitors we met from all corners of the world while there, all shared a passion & interest to experience this remote part of CR natural beauty. In everything the Drake Bay Wilderness Resort team did, we experienced their respect for the natural environment in which they live & therefore expertise in what they do. Whether it was the "captain" of our boat guiding us out of the river through the breakers into the ocean, our guide Manual educating us on the wildlife & flora in Corcovado, tracking the dolphins en route to Cano Island; or the preparation of delicious food served in this remote location - Marleny, Adrian and their team have mastered the balance of providing a very comfortable, in many ways luxurious stay, yet maintaining the rustic, natural beauty of the wilderness we came to explore. The food was delicious. Remember - we arrived by boat - our luggage side by side with bags of watermelon & other fresh supplies. Somehow - DBWR conjured 3 fresh meals a day, each day varied. A favourite was our picnic in Corcovado - fresh salad, chicken, ham, cheese, fruit, ice cold water and juices - all served on a table cloth -in a setting of howler monkeys, tropical forest and crashing waves. The DBWR team exemplified the generosity & kindness of CR. After hiking & boating excursions, you may hand your muddy, soaked laundry to be washed for free; Nellie awaits you from 4.30pm in the bar area, ready to serve drinks and chit chat with you as we rode out a heavy rain shower. With laughter, she corrected our spanish, shared her university learning on first aid in wildlife (how to identify a venomous vs non venomous snake); while Manual was ever patient not only educating us on our trips, pointing out beautiful school of jacks, parrot fish - but also teaching our 7 year old son how to crack open a coconut & drink fresh coco water - later used to make pina colada's for our sundowners. From the hammocks set up around the property, to the salt water pool & natural tidal pools, the communal bar area, path to Cocolita beach, it felt as if attention was paid to every detail to ensure you as the guest, may savor the unspoiled natural beauty of Drake Bay and Corcovado. The family have been doing this for almost 30 years - their expertise & warmth created an unforgettable, magical 80th birthday holiday for my father and our family. We do hope to make it back again some day. Highly recommended for those who love & respect nature.

Room Tip: Our trip was in July/August - rainy & cool ocean breezes at night. Our rooms had windows with l...

Drake Bay Wilderness Resort is one of the most delightful experiences of my long life. I stayed for five days and four nights. The owner and the staff proved to be remarkable at they attention they provide their clients and in problem solving for visitors. The guides on our various excursions were highly professional and took the utmost care at ensuring our safety while providing unforgetable experiences. I traveled with a large group of university students whom I am confident shared my experience. The food was exceptional and although we encountered more than 20 hours of violent rain at one point, they ensured meal service and recommended alternative adventures. It was more than fun, it was an intellectual experience that left me with an impeccable understanding of the environment and the complications faced in this part of the world to sustain an ecological balance. Last, but hardly least, is the ambience and beauty of Drake Bay Wilderness Resort. Established and run by the same family for a couple of decades I am sure you will have the time of your life whether 20 or 70 years old. Thanks to all who provided such wonderful care to our group. Hasta pronto.

Room Tip: All the rooms were clean, beautifully decorated, and refreshing. A Tucan often visited the tree near...

The resort has the best location site and view of Drake Bay. It was one of the first resorts on the peninsula. They are in the process of modernizing the cabins and ours included a/c. The staff were as nice as any I've ever encountered. Their willingness to go out of their way to make you feel at home was outstanding (especially the dinning host!!!) Everything was extremely well coordinated; e.g., being picked up at the air strip, the efficiency and excellence of the tours. We took the longer Corcovado National Park tour which was well worth the extra cost, which was not a difficult hike, but the heat was a factor and should be a factor if you decide on going. A surprisingly enjoyable tour was the Mangrove tour because of the number of birds and wildlife we saw in the comfort of a boat. There were some disappointments though, mostly with the limited breakfasts and lunches provided. Each morning the same foods were prepared and each lunch for the tours was the same (peanut butter, chicken or tuna sandwiches). The evening meals were hit and miss. When the meal was good, it was very good, when it was not, it was mediocre at best. Considering the cost of this resort, I think this was a major negative. The snacks at the bar were usually quite good. At the end of the day, not having a t.v. was a good thing - for a short while, you felt truly away from it all. (The bar does have internet though.) So, would I return to this resort, maybe. Would I return to the Osa Peninsula? Definitely.

Room Tip: Ask for A/C and, if possible, a room close to the ocean.

I spent four days at this resort with high school buddies during our Sophomore year, and looking back at the pictures from the trip recently compelled me to find the website and leave a review. I am now a college Junior and hope to visit back again. Why?

Well, for short, I had a magical experience here my first visit. We took dancing lessons and played in the pool for hours during the day, and spent the nights trying to make friends with any girls our age while relaxing in the hot tub (i was 15). We took a hike through the surrounding jungle and experienced the local wildlife, including tapirs, capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, the Jabiru, the Quetzal, the Tucan, Alligators and Dolphins and so much more! For kinds, the biodiversity is fascinating and fun! Being 15 at the time, my little kid soul emerged as my fascination with the landscape and wildlife peaked. For the 18 or older, the Bar is stocked with anything you could need. There is music, dancing, eating, jungle tours, ocean tours, and the peace an quiet of your own private bungalow (HoneyMoon Bungalow sometimes available) !! I highly recommend this resort for the politness of its employees, its above average service and killer location. Each and every view is beautiful. This place is just great for all kinds of people, and I cannot wait to go back.

Room Tip: HoneyMoon Bundalow has plenty of privacy, as it is on a small hill surrounded with Trees. Every bung...

A girlfriend and I stayed here for 6 days in mid January 2013. The grounds are gorgeous and well maintained, the food was always deliciously prepared with friendly staff, not all of them speak English. You'll always meet someone new in the dining room. The owner, Marleny, is a good Tico business woman who is also kind-hearted. She runs a tight ship there. We had a room with Air Con because my friend had heard it gets really hot. Truth be told we could have easily done without it. Beds were not very comfortable and needs better mattresses. Happy Hour appetizers were too much starch and carbs. It's pretty pricey but in the end, we were very well taken care of with them arranging all the trips, the food was good, room was good. Upsides: Has Wi-Fi. Downside: Has Wi-Fi.

My husband, 14 year old son and I spent 3 blissful nights here in April. It was a great, stress free experience; from the information gathering stage to the boat taxi when we departed at the end of our stay. The staff speaks great English, and provided every piece of information we needed. Our first day, they coordinated an amazing hike into the Sirena Station of Corcovado National Park for us. On the second day, for something different we opted for a horseback ride and the Resort connected us with Arnoldo. This was, without a doubt, the best horseback ride we have ever had. Highlights of the horseback ride were a trip to a jungle pool and waterfall where we ate our packed lunches and cooled off in the water; actually rode horses that could run; and cashew juice! We had never seen cashews growing, so Arnoldo picked the fruit, and had our hotel squeeze the fruit for the juice! It was delicious and an experience none of us will ever forget.

Hotel info: The location of the hotel is unparalleled. It is located on a point where a river meets Drake Bay. It was so incredibly relaxing to sit in a hammock, or by the pool, or on a rock on the beach and just watch the sun move in the sky. Even though the weather was hot and humid we elected rooms without air conditioning so we could have open windows. This was a good choice for us. Our room had a ceiling fan, and a portable fan that provided air circulation and made for great sleeping. It was great hearing the surf, and jungle sounds at night. Each room has a table for two on the deck outside for sun and ocean watching. The bathrooms are basic, but adequate, as are the furnishings in the rooms. We were provided with laundry bags on arrival and it was great to drop off a bag at the office in the morning, and come home in the afternoon to clean laundry... it was free!

The food provided in the dining room was delicious. We basically had the resort to ourselves and yet the dining room provided all the choices and amenities they would if the facility had been ull. The food was quite tasty and the portions generous. The beach front bar was also open every day and the happy hour snacks were still provided... just for us! The staff also takes a lot of pride in the maintenance of the facilities and it is will deserved.

We would definitely return!

Room Tip: If you think you can sleep with a/c, do it! The rooms with a/c do not have windows that can be open...

As if Drake Bay Wilderness Resort providing of striking beauty and serenity along with all of the adventures and unique activities isn't enough, Drake Bay Wilderness Resort has the most genuine, caring, down to earth, and caring people and staff that I have ever come across in all my travels. The resort itself has been in the family since it was started three generations ago and Adrian, his mom, and everyone else working to create an atmosphere as enjoyable as possible for us were able to transport us out of our own lives that had become cramped with trivial worries and responsibilities and truly open up a simpler world of friendliness and comfort. Whether your looking to get hooked up with great tours and adventure advice or relax in secluded shady beach hammocks for an afternoon, Drake Bay Wilderness Resort has it all. Great for kids and families, college age travelers, and anyone else who is feeling like they need a break from the day to day bustle. Honestly, its difficult to put into words the world that Adrian and his family have sustained for us and you would be crazy to not take the opportunity to check it out for yourself! :)

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Since it was founded in 1985, Drake Bay Wilderness Resort has continued to be a family run business. Our focus has been to take good care of our guests so that they'll feel right at home. We try to be as flexible as possible, taking into consideration people´s needs and we do our very best to fulfill special requests. For instance, we will prepare meals for special diets. Furthermore, the hotel is situated in one of the most beautiful locations in the area. It has large open areas with a bounty of beautiful flowers, tropical plants, big mango trees, and beach almond trees that attract the raucous macaws. The property gives you the feel of being in a private island since the river flows along the backside of the property and the whole front side meets the ocean. In addition to this, most visitors come to us by boat and the access by land to the hotel is a small path, unreachable by car, that is submerged in a jungle. Best of all, there is a paradise like view of the bay and ocean, reflecting the deep blue sky and, beyond that, hills bound in lush forests. We offer all sorts of extras that help make our guests' stay more comfortable and enjoyable. For example, we include a full laundry service. Kayaks close to the water are always at our guests' disposal. We have a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, dock, and hammocks to relax under the shade of a tree with the cool ocean breeze blowing on you. From our hotel we take guests on adventures in snorkeling, hiking, diving, canoeing and whale watching. Visitors often see four species of monkeys, sloths, tapir, caiman and a myriad of birds, including the scarlet macaw, mangrove hawk, toucan... ... more   less
