“Felt like Indiana Jones”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2012

Having to travel by plane, small, plane, boat , and jeep to get here was so fun! My husband and I seriously felt like we were in an Indiana Jones movie. The staff and service is amazing. The views spectacular. And the food was so so good. Everything was included. We took a night time bug tour at my husband's request and ended up really enjoying it. Perfect for Hiking. our favorite part was talking to the staff about the nature, hiking to the town, and hiking to Rio Claro.

Very lovely spot, well kept, basic lodging and excellent food. Staff was very helpful. Beautiful grounds, great service, wonderful views. Rooms are basic but clean. Ceiling fans (no a/c), running hot and cold water. Nice salt water pool. The local guide, Manuel, was knowledgeable and went above and beyond to make sure we developed a greater appreciation of the wildlife and flora of the area. Short boat ride to Corcovado National Park and about a half hour to diving/snorkeling off of Cano Island. The area is VERY humid so do not expect wet items to dry. Have non-slip flip flops to wear in your room, the tile gets wet and stays slick

Room Tip: I do not think there is a bad room in the place. They all face the ocean and are an adequate distan...

The staff take care of everything - bus tickets from San Jose, taxi, water taxi, tours, food...and they do your laundry on top of it! Imagine brushing your teeth in the morning outside your cabana with a view of the Pacific and the bright red and green macaws making the trees look like Christmas. Our group of 8 (two families with teens) took advantage of several of the tours including the canopy zip-lining, Bug Lady Night Tour, and Corcovado National Park. A couple of us also enjoyed kayaking up the little stream that runs adjacent to the lodge and saw a caiman. I'd recommend taking the bus ($10 one-way) to Palmar Norte, then taxi and boat to Drake Bay and flying back if your starting point is San Jose. The bus ride is long (six hours), but worth the scenery and local culture (and you can't beat the cost). Post Drake Bay we flew back to San Jose and enjoyed a day of white-water rafting on the Pacuare River before heading back to the states.

Room Tip: If you're wiling to rough it and want to save money, go for one of the cabanas which are a step...

We visited Drake Bay with our two kids, aged 8 and 6, and we are very glad we picked Drake Bay Wilderness Resort. The owners and staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and my kids felt quite attached to them! The kids loved having the pool to relax in, so that was a big bonus, as were the hammocks, swings, and open areas the kids enjoyed. In fact, we felt safe letting the kids wander around the whole property on their own--it is intimate enough that we didn't have to worry. The rooms are simple and basic, but comfortable, and the food is healthy. The price is very reasonable, especially considering the prices of neighboring resorts. You get a lot for your money! We particularly loved the tours and the tour guides, and we had fun doing a tour each day of our trip. On the tours, we saw lots of animals that we would never have seen without the guides. The kids enjoyed the hikes, boat rides, animal watching, and everything else. A great family trip!

Room Tip: The ac room helped us to keep cool.

I had a very relaxing stay, beautiful grounds, sunrises and sunsets, and nice kayaking in the area as well. I very highly recommend the experience and was saddened to leave after only 3 nights! I still think about the beautiful birds and animals we saw during our stay there.

Very nice hotel. Very quiet and immersed in the gulf.
Loved their customer service and their kitchen even more. Very tasty meals.
Enjoyed the rides and tours, just as well as the walks thru the near by beaches.
I cant wait to go there again!

This is a friendly, well-run place with much to offer in the way of quiet, beauty, and wildlife. We stayed for 4 days in February and took advantage of all the main tours- snorkeling, Corcovado Park, Mangrove, as well as the night bioluminescence swim. We especially appreciated Adrian (one of the family owners - very kind and helpful), Tico & Manuel (super informative & safety conscious tour guides). We saw whales, coral reef, tapir, ant eater, several species of trogons, and the stunning scarlet macaw at their nest. The food was well prepared and beautifully presented. When out on tour, our lunches were hearty and tasty.

One recommendation: if they could have some field guides on hand for reference, as well as some of the fold out field guides for sale, that would be helpful. Because of the weight limit on the domestic flight we took from San Jose, we couldn't carry along a heavy birding or wildlife guide.

This was our third and likely final trip to CR for a while - Osa was a blast.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Since it was founded in 1985, Drake Bay Wilderness Resort has continued to be a family run business. Our focus has been to take good care of our guests so that they'll feel right at home. We try to be as flexible as possible, taking into consideration people´s needs and we do our very best to fulfill special requests. For instance, we will prepare meals for special diets. Furthermore, the hotel is situated in one of the most beautiful locations in the area. It has large open areas with a bounty of beautiful flowers, tropical plants, big mango trees, and beach almond trees that attract the raucous macaws. The property gives you the feel of being in a private island since the river flows along the backside of the property and the whole front side meets the ocean. In addition to this, most visitors come to us by boat and the access by land to the hotel is a small path, unreachable by car, that is submerged in a jungle. Best of all, there is a paradise like view of the bay and ocean, reflecting the deep blue sky and, beyond that, hills bound in lush forests. We offer all sorts of extras that help make our guests' stay more comfortable and enjoyable. For example, we include a full laundry service. Kayaks close to the water are always at our guests' disposal. We have a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, dock, and hammocks to relax under the shade of a tree with the cool ocean breeze blowing on you. From our hotel we take guests on adventures in snorkeling, hiking, diving, canoeing and whale watching. Visitors often see four species of monkeys, sloths, tapir, caiman and a myriad of birds, including the scarlet macaw, mangrove hawk, toucan... ... more   less
