“Beautiful but costly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2010

The Aguila is gorgeous! Everything is very clean, staff goes above and beyond. The food is exceptional and it's fun eating family style with other guests. I do think it's overpriced overall. The value is in the activities--diving, hiking. You get a reduced rate for being there. You are in a cabin in the jungle and it's hot with bugs. Rooms have fans but no air conditioning. While they are comfortable and clean, I wouldn't say they are luxurious. The wildlife is great too! Also, it's quite a hike to your room up more than 70 steps. Also, there is no swimming pool. Very glad we made the trip but probably wouldn't return as it was very expensive. They even charge to have internet access in the common area.

This was our second trip to the Aguila de Osa. Previously we took our two teenage children who shared our wonderful experience. From the exciting ride on Sansa Airlines to Palmar Sur, the van ride with Chino from the airport (or more accurately, "air shanty"), the power boat ride on the Sierpe River and our arrival at the hotel, no trip could be more perfect. The accommodations, the incredible healthy cuisine, the friendly and caring staff (whose jobs are to make your vacation comfortable and fun, to the multitude of hiking and water activities offered, this is the perfect spot to relax and forget about the stresses of daily life. We saw every imaginable jungle plant and animal, and had knowledgeable guides and/or staff to teach about them. An out of the way kayak trip up the Rio Claro from Ricardo's tent on San Josecinto Beach is a must. Swimming and diving into a three level waterfall and natural pool is an inexpensive idyllic way to cool off on a hot Costa Rican day. We can't say enough good things about our two stays at this first class jungle lodge!!

I have personally designed my 25 days trip through Costa Rica searching for off the beaten track and secluded places. What I absolutely didn’t want was to end up at the overcrowded and overdeveloped beach resorts where local beauty and character are represented mostly by exotic cocktails, commercial tours and loud night entertainment. I wanted to see and to feel REAL Costa Rica – and I found such a place!
Peninsula Osa and the Aguila de Osa Inn in particular exceeded my expectations… From the very first minute when a local boat brought me to the lodge I felt like if I came home. Bradd Johnson (the Hotel’s proud and dedicated owner) has created a unique atmosphere of happiness and love at the Aguila de Osa Inn, treating all his staff members as well as the Hotel’s guests like one big family.
I am not going to describe the outstanding natural beauty of the area or to share my special emotions – I just highly recommend to spend at least a week at the Aguila de Osa Inn and to get your own experience!
I want to take this opportunity and to thank all the extraordinary people who made me feel happy in Real Costa Rica: Olman, Carlos, Manuel, Freddy, Veronica, Willy, Mike, Amanda - sorry if I don’t remember all the names.
I will definitely come back to Peninsula Osa.

Special tips:
Don’t go if your target is to watch CNN – no TV;
Don’t go if you can’t survive without Air-Condition – not such a thing!
Don’t go if your idea of enjoying the Ocean is a swimming pool;
Don’t go if you are afraid of wild life – you’ll be in the middle of it;

We spent a week over Christmas as the Aguila de Osa inn, and were impressed from the very start. The staff was friendly, welcoming and accomodating. We loved the food and family style seating allowed us to meet other guests. The cocktail hour was a highlight each day to hear about everyone's adventures, the views spectacular and the tours were amazing. We did the zipline, scuba diving, a trip to the mangroves and the night hike- all worthwhile, with such knowledegable staff. Thank you to Sandra for the diving and Carlos for the Mangrove tour. We also loved Coco, the resident dog and her daily excursions with guests to the beach or the town. Monkeys on the roof, macaws and hummingbirds, glorious flowers- truly paradise. We hope to be back again.

We stayed at Aguilla for 8 nights and the service we received was outstanding, from all (the grounds staff, bartenders, dock hands, maids, reservaionists, guides, cooks, waitstaff, etc... )
There were 4 of us, 2 stayed in a Standard Room #7 and 2 stayed in a Jr Suite (#11). The Standard Room - nothing to complain about - the views spectacular... The Jr Suite - everything to brag about... private, comforatable, roomy, great breezes and nice views.
The location was part of the experience. We flew into Palmur Sur and took the boat ride to the resort. It is a little further away than Drake Bay but after 3 flights, the boat ride from Palmur Sur was refreshing.
While at Aguila, we snorkeled, went fishing, zip lining, kayaking, hiking, swimming, mangrove tour, night tour, explored town of Drake Bay and visited a local bar. Amongst all, it was the guided activities through Aguila that offer the best experience especially the Mangrove tour with "Carlos", the Corcovada Hike with "Tony" and the Snorkel trip with "Manuel" all guides are very knowledgeable and have a passion for what they teach, you won't be disappointed with any of Aguila's Tour Guides. Oh... and the lunches provided on the tours are wonderful as well.
On all of our vacations fishing is a must so I booked a full day when making my reservations. When we arrived, the fishing boat was undergoing severe maintenance (something to do with a sinking?) Thinking that our fishing adventure may not happen, we were approached by Carlos who had already arranged for a private charter to pick us up at the resort allowing us to enjoy the fishing! We had a wonderful time, caught Mahi, Tuna and Three Fin fish. In addition we were able to save a Turtle that was caught up in a fishing net about 10 miles from shore! One of the most memorable Christmas's we'll ever have.
The wildlife: too many to mention, but we saw almost everything you would expect in the CR jungle, except a Puma or Jaguar, which is fine with me...

We spent 4 nights at Aguila de Osa in early December and loved it. One of the other guests referred to Aguila de Osa as "rustic luxury" and that is an excellent description. We chose to fly into Palma Sur on Nature Air (as opposed to Drake Bay) and were met by Carlos from the Inn. Carlos accompanied us on our journey to Aguila which began with an approx. 10-15 min. drive to Sierpe where we picked up the water taxi. The trip took about 1 hour and was lovely as we travelled down the Sierpe River out to the Pacific where we sped down the coastline for about 10-15 min. until we arrived at the docks of Aguila de Osa. Our jaws dropped as we headed up to the main lodge which is an open air dining building overlooking Drake Bay with a stunning view. The property is set right in the rainforest with the most beautiful landscaping and gorgeous vegetation.

The meals were excellent and enjoyed in a "family style" set up where we sat at long tables and shared stories with our fellow guests. The climb up to our rooms is quite a hike but the stunning surroundings and view are well worth the climb.

Carlos (staff member and 1 of the tour guides) took us on a fantastic mangrove tour. He is so knowledgeable and was able to spot wildlife that we never would have seen. He went to great lengths to set up his telescope so that we could get a better look at some of the wildlife that was higher up. We saw monkeys, crocodiles, caymans, 3 toed sloth, scarlet macaws as well as many herons. Thank you Carlos for a fantastic and most memorable day discovering the mangroves.

The snorkeling trip to Cano Island was terrific where we saw all kinds of colorful fish and the picnic lunch that was spread out for us (prepared by the Inn) was amazing. We were treated like royalty. The staff at Aguila de Osa were so friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. Carlos also arranged for a fun 1/2 day in shore fishing trip where my husband caught a rooster fish, mahi mahi, yellow fin tuna as well as an albacor tuna. Our captain, Jeremy, was from Sierpe and he and his crew made sure we had a great time. Highly recommend Jeremy - he knew where to take us where the fish were biting.

We would return to Aguila de Osa again - peace and tranquility - fantastic scenery and atmosphere. Loved it. Thank you to all the staff for a most memorable holiday.

If you enjoy the nature experience, great food, great people and wonderful lodging, then Aguila de Osa Inn is the place for you! We couldn't have asked for a more enjoyable stay with Bradd and his outstanding group of employees, everything was first rate! Carlos' mangrove tour was just wonderful with all that Costa Rica has to offer. Thanks again to Bradd and all the staff. Lonnie and Adelle
