This small ecolodge is the ultimate experience in accommodations, service, and adventures. Service is very personal. Rooms are huge. The location is a dream. The hotel offers all kinds of tours (rain forest, diving, fishing, mangroves, zip lining, you name it). One of the best features is that, while the grounds are large, the hotel is relatively small (about 30 guests), and you meet and make friends almost immediately with half of them. Meals eaten at eight-person tables and happy hour with free appetizers means that you easily get to people and exchange addresses after just a few days at this lodge. Most telling: we were greeted with "welcome" by other guests who, after arriving just a day earlier, already felt at home. (Yes, the experience is expensive, but it's also unforgettable, and you most likely want to come back.)

Room Tip: Rooms are up a small but steep walk. Try to get a room nearer the main complex if walking uphill is...

Of our thirteen day vacation in Costa Rica, our five days in the Osa was hands down the highlight of our trip. We have been to a lot of wonderful places, but the Osa has moved to the top of my list.

We were there at the beginning of December and since it was the end of the rainy season, not only did we get a great rate, but there were hardly any people. The hotel was booked every night, but the area itself had very few tourists while we there.

We did the Cano Island Dive and the Corcovado Tour starting at the Sirena Ranger Station. The tour guides, Sandra (for the dive) and Tony (for the park) were both great, but I wasn't wowed by the tours themselves. From what I had read about the diving in that area, I hadn't expected much but I was a bit disappointed by the park itself. I had expected to see a lot more wildlife and even prettier flora but I guess you really need to hike well into the forest to experience that. I also was hoping that the hike itself would be a bit challenging, but it's more like a stroll. Next time I go back, we'll probably do the mongrove tour instead which everyone raved about.

The breakfast and dinners at the hotel were amazing. My boyfriend and I are both foodies, so we were not disappointed. The breakfast menu was quite extensive from whole wheat banana pancakes to a typical Costa Rican breakfast. For dinner there were usually two entrees to choose from, usually fish and some type of meat. We had the fish every night because it was so fresh and prepared compared completely different each time. Before dinner, there is a cocktail hour with free appetizers which were really good as well. Before we went, I wasn't sure how I was going to like the communal meals, but that ended up being one of the highlights of our stay. We met a lot of wonderful people from all over North America and Europe and had a lot of fun chatting with everyone during the cocktail hour and meals.

One afternoon, the owner Bradd took us, along with some other guests on the boat over to another part of the island for a Turtle Festival sponsored by the Corcovado Foundation. I found out later that he is on the board of this wonderful organization. http://www.corcovadofoundation.org/sea-tutle-conservation.html. All the locals were there. There was music and entertainment for the children and at the end they released all the turtles into the ocean. It was quite moving and we were so fortunate to be able to be part of that.

On the last day my boyfriend and I walked along the beach and jungle for miles and saw amazing wildlife and hardly any humans. There were several beautiful beaches with nobody on them - it was absolutely amazing. When we got back we took the kayaks down the river then back along the bay. That was our best day and everything was free!

Because there are so many great places in the world to visit, we try not to do repeats, but the Osa is one place that I will definitely return to.

Beautiful, well appointed Inn located in the amazing Drake Bay. The staff was very thoughtful, extremely helpful and always courteous. The food was plentiful and amazingly delicious! The Mangrove tour with Carlos and Corcovado National Park hike with Tony are a must!! Their knowledge and expertise of the plants, animals and environment are outstanding and really add to the experience. There are other great excursions available we did not have time for. This is an exceptional lodge in a tropical paradise where Brad (owner) and staff pay attention to every detail. We can't wait to return.

Room Tip: The water is treated & drinkable. Each room has its own bathroom and hot shower.

If you harbor a fantasy visit of Costa Rica that involves jungle, rivers, ocean, monkeys, a dusty town and a world class boutique lodge from which to enjoy it all then Aguila de Osa is for you. We arrived at Aguila by way of a tiny plane to Palmar Sur, a van to Sierpe and then a boat ride to the hotel dock. We were greeted warmly by the efficient staff, fed a delicious lunch (the first of many great meals here) and escorted to our lovely, well appointed rooms. The views from the rooms are incredible- looking out over Drake Bay and the jungle of the mainland. The food is fantastic and plentiful, quite a feat when you realize most everything is being brought over by boat.
Our family had an incredible day of fishing out in the Pacific. We also did the popular snorkel trip to Cano Island. Sandra was our guide and she put us on top of enormous schools of amberjack and a couple of sharks. Due to recent restrictions you can no longer have lunch on the island, but the trip San Josecito beach is terrific. It is a lovely swimmable beach, with lots of wildlife in the trees nearby. We also did a hike in the Corcovado Park with Tony who is a knowledgeable and passionate guide. A great deal of credit must given to all the guides who take all the adventures beyond the ordinary.
If you are not up for guided tours you can easily take one of the kayaks up the river to see lots of birds and monkeys or walk to a couple of nearby beaches.
The only drawback to this place is the (small) cruise ships which anchor nearby and then ferry their passengers to the peninsula.

Room Tip: Room 14 is fantastic! It is however, the longest walk from the lodge, but it is a room you will love.

The professionalism of the guides at this establishment was excellent. Carlos Gonzales is 30 year veteran bird guide who knows the local ecology and is very knowledgable about the flora and fauna. Highlights include three Potoos, Scarlet Macaws in a nest, and squirrel monkey troop. The diving staff is also knowledgable, kind, and safety oriented. Their equipment was in great shape. Highlights included the Ridley's Sea turtle, reef sharks, and Devil Manta Rays.

This is a top notch lodge in one of the world's most beautiful areas. The staff is wonderful from the very moment you arrive. We had a lovely room overlooking the bay with a hammock that just beckoned me to relax. But first we took advantage of their menu of excursions. Our favorite was snorkeling at Cano Island. The boat trip took about 45 minutes on a good sized boat that held booth the snorkelers and the divers. First the divers were dropped off and then Gabrielle our leader, took us out. She directed us to various spots to see the best fish. We saw quite a variety...even a white tipped shark swimming along the bottom. On the way back we stopped for a picnic on the beach.
The food at Aguila is wonderful and considering that everything must come in by boat, there is quite a variety. Dinner starts with a cocktail hour. A three course meal follows with a choice of entrees and always, dessert. The guests are seated family style which wouldn't have necessarily been my choice, but in such a small lodge, people do become friendly. We met people from both Europe and America. The focus of conversation was travel. It seems that people who visit this area have broad travel experiences, so it was fun to listen and think about our next trip.
Before you leave Aguila de OSA, don't miss the Mangrove tour. Tony, our leader, has a wealth of knowledge about both flora and fauna. He made sure we saw monkeys, crocodiles and numerous species of birds. My husband who is a "birder" was delighted. Tony imparted a true appreciation for this natural area.
There are a few cons for those thinking of visiting. The lodge is built on a hill. The lowest rooms are about 40 steps up from the main area. This would not be a good choice for someone with mobility problems. It is also very hot and humid. Clothes don't dry. Unfortunately there is no swimming pool and the beach is a 20 minute hike. There is some opportunity to swim in the river. But it is not ideal.
If these restrictions are not an issue, than Aguila de OSA is an ideal tropical wilderness adventure.

My wife and I couldn't be happier with our stay at Aguila de Osa. The setting was breathtaking, the rooms were very comfortable (yes, even without AC), and the beaches were a close walk and very beautiful. The staff were incredible, easily the friendliest and most helpful people we met in Costa Rica (and just about everyone we met on our trip was super nice, so that's saying something!). The food was very, very good, the drinks reasonably priced, and our fellow guests were really nice to have appetizers and dinner with at night. The trips we went on while there (Canopy zip-line tour and Corcovado National Park) were also well-done, well planned, and thoroughly enjoyable, especially Elbert, our guide in Corcovado. He was extremely knowledgeable and went to great lengths to show us things most people wouldn't see on a typical tour.

Basically, we can't wait to go back!
