La Paloma made me feel at home and peaceful. The service is always attentive and the food was very good. There was never a feeling of wanting more. And the way it is done is such that one never felt bad about such treatment: the joy the staff felt was such that it came across in all they did.

Bravo.

We just returned from our 4 night getaway to La Paloma Lodge and Luxury Beach House Stay. We were a family of 7 and had a fabulous time. My sister sadly broke her foot right before we left, so the trek back and forth to the beach house wasn't easy. However, the La Paloma staff was fantastic and helped us in every way possible.
Cheers to Nicole (the resorts general manager) who has been working at the lodge for over 20 years, and doesn't miss a beat! She is gracious, kind and loving. Her smile makes me smile... She made sure that we had the best vacation ever. I have stayed in the lodge several times in the past, and I will definitely return in future.
We saw and abundance of bugs, scarlet macaws, monkeys, toucans and even a sloth all at the property.
If you want an absolutely gorgeous, peaceful, jungle experience in a remote pristine area, you must not miss La Paloma Lodge!

We recently returned from a fantastic stay at the La Paloma Lodge Beach House. This house is privately owned, but shares common facilities with the lodge.
The home itself is beautifully designed with several glass walls to feel at one with nature. There is a fully appointed and large kitchen and a beautiful deck for taking meals or just lounging. There are three bedrooms BUT it is important to note that only two are physically in the main house (and separated by quite a distance. The third bedroom is more of a casita that is detached from the main house. This is great for privacy, but if you are staying with young children it is a consideration. The home is located about 15 minutes by foot from the lodge. You feel quite alone in the jungle. Again, important to note, that from home it is a relatively steep climb down to the beach (or obviously up to the house) with a number of stairs. Continuing to the lodge requires another walk up the hill. This was part of our enjoyment, but would be difficult if not impossible for someone with limited mobility. You have your own private jungle beach for swimming and exploring.
The lodge helped cater to our every need. They purchased groceries for us and stocked the kitchen. They catered meals to the house. They arranged for all of the tours. We split meals between the main lodge (outstanding food) and cooking (and barbecuing) at the house. Tours start early so a quick breakfast at the house is perfect.
We participated in four activities:
1. Mangrove tour - about a 6 hour trip by boat up the river to and the past Sierpe through wonderful mangrove. We were able to spot all manner of flora and fauna including but not limited to: scarlet macaws (one found nesting in large hole) and (two found sharing food in another tree where they had bored holes), several species of monkey, crocodile, iguana, bats, sloths, wading birds (herons, egrets), nesting birds (boobies, pelicans), and much more.
2. Hike at Pedrillo ranger station in Corcovado. A short boat ride in the bay to reach the ranger station, followed by a 2-3 hour hike, a fantastic picnic lunch, and then hike/swim in the refreshing waterfall. Again, we were blessed with terrific wildlife spotting. We also learned so much about the flora and medicinal properties found in the jungle.
3. Night hike with the Bug Lady - will review separately, Loved it. A walk along the paths of the Lodge property to see all sorts of very cool bugs, scorpion, spider, frog, and other night creatures. I have never met anyone more passionate about bugs as the Bug Lady.
4. Scuba/snorkel trip to Cano Island. We have a young daughter who snorkeled and several of us dived. No problem arranging for this mixed trip. A very nice spot on Cano island with several dive sites. Highlighted by seeing and diving with several white tip reef sharks, and two species of turtle. The reef was nice but relatively average. Worth the trip to see a different side of the ecosystem.
A major shoutout to Randall our guide for the Corcovado hike and the Mangrove trip. Randall is a tremendous asset to the resort. Has encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna of the area and has the eyes of an eagle. Having lived his whole life in the Drake Bay area, he was very willing to share how attitudes have changed through the generations to the point where his own children are budding environmental activists/conservationists. Very enlightening. He was amazing. Ask for him for your excursions.
Andrea was a tremendous help pre-trip helping to organize all of the activities, food orders, and details.
Nichole, Pamela and the staff did a fabulous job at the resort.
One more note - this is the jungle. Expect bugs. Bugs outside. Bugs inside. Bugs everywhere. Ironically, we did not get any bites during the stay and really enjoyed finding beautiful moths, mantis and other insects all around. But, be prepared.
On our way back to San Jose we stopped at Manuel Antonio which has become wildly overcrowded.
The peace, remoteness, and wildlife make La Paloma, Drake bay and Corcovado and fantastic choice.

After 3 years we came back to Paloma Lodge for Christmas time. And again. One of the best experiences in our life! We enjoyed the lodge, the daily activities and the great service and food! Great applause for the Kitchen team! Special mention to Pamela, Arnoldo ( our guide for 2 days), Dinia, Lis, Catia and Ginin! They are wonderful! And all the staff ! Those cleaning the rooms, those sailing the boats, ALL are Amazing! But next Christmas....please...do not ask us to sing american Chistmas Carols...we are in Costa Rica and I am pretty sure there are lovely Costa Rica Christmas songs!
