Casa Drake Lodge

We stayed here for 4 nights march 2014. The room we had was very clean (as was the rest of the house and bathroom) and really well prepared. We had a fan provided and an insect net kept us clear of bites at night. This isn't a sanitised western hotel, it is a taste of life in Costa Rica and was a real pleasure for that, the family who own and run the property were very friendly and helpfully. The son speaks some English so communication for us was fine. It's about 10 km from Drakes bay in the Taxi, a pickup truck, but they take you any time you like and if you stay near the hotel lunch and dinner are provided in our cost of 80 USD a day. I would add as others have that the quality of the food was excellent, inventive and varied on each evening. My wife is a vegetarian and this was catered for without resorting to the usual staples.

We are keen brid watchers and photographers and we saw at least 30 different spp. there from the balcony of our bedroom and the ' hammock' balcony. Two scarlet macaws are regular visitors to an almond tree outside our room and every evening at 6 pm there was a noisy congregation of green parrots.

They have a good knowledge of the local attractions and can arrange trips for anything available from Drakes Bay. We went to Sirena park and it was an excellent day with sightings of spider monkeys, a tapier and a large crocodile among the highlights.

Room Tip: NW side room have a sight of the almond tree and humming bird flowers.

I stayed 4 nights here with my boyfriend and it was the best choice for us! We were the only two in the whole house for the entire stay so we had the VIP treatment, all the attention and help only for us! The lodge is owned and ran by a Costarican family and they do an excellent job, they are so nice and helpful. They arrange any tour you want to take and get you a very good price. All 3 meals are included in the price and the food was very good and plenty, everyday something different and always included starter and dessert, more than enough food!

The hotel is a little far away form the town center, its about a 15-20 min ride, so you will need to take a car or ATV to get there, they will also arrange that, but you need to consider that every ride to town and back will cost you about $10 each time. Also there are no en-suite bathrooms, they are downstairs so that is a little bit of an inconvenience.

Staying at this place was a great deal, the price was great, the place was beautiful, food was delicious and its owned by hardworking, honest and friendly people, I couldn't recommend more!

Exceptionally clean and comfortable room, great family atmosphere, good food and local flavor. Spanish speaking needed to get the most out of the experience but I expect it would be enjoyable even with limited Spanish. Luz Marie is excellent cook with great variety in meals that included Costa Rican standards and also some variety. Zacarius has lived in the area for 47 years and knows all the local area well, can arrange wide variety of activities. This is not a beach place but there is lots of primary forest nearby. Only downside to accommodations is the shared bathrooms are downstairs. If you are looking for this type of experience (not a luxury resort) this is by far the best choice around.

This lodge, built and run by a local family is a really special place with a lot of heart and the best typical food ever, horseback rides, and located in a quiet area with lots of wildlife and plants. Had one of the best experiences in Costa Rica....

Room Tip: Its a simple acomodation, shared bathroom for now ( they re planning to make more )

Gente maravillosa, que lo da todo por el huésped. Amazing people that will do anything for there guests. Quiet place far away from any noice what so ever. This is a house built by Zacarías and his brother who have made it from real solid local wood of only fallen trees, no cut down. He has land surrounding the premises that is pure jungle. You can see anything from exotic birds like tucans to other animals like armadilos.

I spent 5 days there and it was so relaxing! I loved the way this community live, near the nature, in the quiet backcountry. No car pass in front, just childrens playing! The house is so big and beautiful, the interior all in wood. The family is so charming, very helpful, they make your staying the perfec onet! The man, Zacharia can make you discover a lot of nice places! The woman, Marina makes very VERY good food!! wooow! and their child, Kendol is so cute and attaching! (6 years old) I recommend this place really really... Those people are so pure and fantastic! And the place is like paradise!! Enjoy! Pura Vida!!
