We highly recommend the Night tour with the Bug lady. We booked this ahead of our trip as we had heard and read so many good things about the ‘Bug lady’ Tracie Stice and her husband Gian, and it was definitely worth it.
You meet at the Jinetes de Osa Inn in Drake Bay at 7.30 in the evening, it costs $35 per person and it lasts approximately 2 and a half hours. You are given a head lamp to see with and we suggest you wear a long shirt and trousers to protect you from possible insect bites.
You basically wander around the paths and back roads (depending on what they find and what they know ahead) and they bring the bug world to life! We saw an array of frogs and toads, snakes, spiders, sleeping birds and butterflies - and all in places we would have ignorantly walked passed and not seen anything. The stick insects and trap-door spiders were particularly awesome - you would never find them on your own and they are quite incredible. Tracie and Gian are obviously passionate about their subject, and they are hugely knowledgable. They have many true stories about how the bugs have been used by humans and how they live in the wild, and you couldn’t help but be completely in awe of the bug world! We wanted to go again the next night, but it was fully booked for a week ahead - so book early and definitely go!!!
