Settled in the remote part of Costa Rica. A true paradise. In the morning you wake up by the sounds of all tropical birds and the howling monkey's.....what a way to wake up. The rooms are beautiful and the the setting is amazing. Also the owner Juan is a real fantastic host, he's most helpfull and always ready to help his guests. If you're looking for a hotel in Drake's bay...stop looking any further and go to this place.

My husband and I stayed in a Superior room at Finca Maresia for three nights in March. The room was comfortable, with a safe, ceiling fan, storage shelves, and a mosquito net over the large bed. There was a great deck overlooking the jungle with two hammocks. The bathroom was very modern, and we loved the open air shower!

Juan was a great host. He takes care of everything, from transportation and tour arrangements, to cooking dinner. The four-course dinner is served around a large communal table, so you get to know the other guests and share travel stories. Breakfast is included in the lodging fee, the dinners are $15, and you can get lunch for $6-8. There is also access to a fridge stocked with an assortment of drinks for a reasonable cost.

We saw a troupe of Spider Monkeys very close to Finca Maresia when we walked back from the beach one afternoon, but birds are the most likely wildlife that you’ll see within the grounds. If you miss your pets back home, there are a couple of resident cats and a wonderful Beagle-mix who accompanied us for a walk to the beach one day, and even guarded our belongings when we went into play in the ocean.

Atop a hill with a stairmaster climb from the village, this is a cool spot if you don't mind being away from the action. Go to Costa Rica for the nature, not the food! That said, Juan's spread was nutritious, nicely plated and plentiful --not gourmet. As a solo female traveller I always felt safe and strong to explore the area on my terms -- no dangers in sight - natural or otherwise!

Here's my top 5 on Finca Maresia

1. Vibe- Juan works hard to make guests feel welcome and to connect with each other - He seems to attract lots of thoughtful, interesting people from all over the world.

2. Local- Juan & partner hire and buy local employing ~25 people from the area, tour operators, drivers, farmers etc., all keen to keep the area pristine without caving to a big resort interests.

3. Animals - You better like pets if you stay here because they are friendly especially to the girl who isn't crazy about petting them.

4. Honest and Respectful - Juan delivers on his promises and asks that guests respect each other to the benefit of all. This creates a special ambiance.

5. Comfort - love the beds and breezy showers!

Highly recommended!

I stayed at Finca Maresia for three nights at the beginning of March, and it was the best experience I had in Costa Rica. Beautiful property, beautiful food, and the best host in Juan. He knows everybody in Drake, and makes sure that whatever kind of experience you are looking for in the area, you get it. He arranged both a scuba diving and rainforest exploration tour of Corcovado for me, and the guides for both trips were absolutely excellent. The breakfast every morning is huge and delicious, as is the home cooked dinner every night. Worth every dollar, and hope to return to this paradise in the hills again soon! Pura vida.

Friends said in advance that this was the highspot of their visit to Costa Rica, so naturally we were curious as we drove out to Bahia Drake along the interminable dirt road with its river crossings - no problem with 4x4 in the dry season, but we'd advise you to take a river boat from Sierpe or a plane, much more fun! Once at the finca we gradually realised what a fabulous place this was, with a series of beatifully designed cabins strung out in a clearing along the rolling hillside surrounded by forest, beatifully equipped, an architectonic delight. The reception/dining area towers above it all, with a practical viewing platform for birdlovers. Staff run a laid-back incredibly helpful service, organising whatever activity you like and full of helpful advice. I'm somewhat handicapped, so they organised special forest walks for me, away from the main drag. Night bug walk and mangrove tour highly recommended, as are the incredible beach walks... Relaxing group suppers, exchanging plans and experiences, getting lots of good ideas for the next stage of our trip. Fantastico! Thank you so much Miguel and saff!

Chosing this hotel was the best choice ever. Already the email converstation with Miguel was nice and pleasant. As I didn't have a paypal account I was unable to pay the reservation fee, this was not a problem at all, the reservation of our flights was assurance enought that we would be there.
The hostel is a little bit outside of Drake bay, but we went to the place after our rainforest tour so we were in need of quietness and relaxation. That is just what we got at Finca Maresia. We were welcomed warmly and the place is just beautiful. The little Cabins are very secluded and nicely made. The common romm (deck) is furnished with hammocks, seats an big table. Also a telescope for birdwatching is provided, as well as books and charts about the wildlife. If you want you can have lunch (10$) and dinner (15$) which all the guest have at the same time at the deck. The food provided is european style and good, breakfast is incluced in the room price.
The first night we slept in a standard room with a shared bath. However, the highlight was the second day were we moved to the superior room. Which is a bigger cabin with its own balcony (with two hammocks) overviewing the edges of the rain forest. The open air shower with view into the rainofrest listening to the birds is just great.
The Cabins are far enough from each other to have real privacy and the hills between the common deck and the cabins just make it a great place. At the common deck there is also a beverages refrigerator where you can take wine, beer or softdrinks, you mark what you use in your chart on a trust basis.
Just sitting on the deck we saw and heard macaws and tucans. In the night the fireflies were just magical.
Instead of going to town and to the beach, we chose to walk 600m to the river with natural pools which gave us a refreshing afternoon. Here we watched birds, dragonflies, frogs and heaps of lizards.
All in all a wonderful place with a wonderful host! If you go to drake bay don't miss this place. But take at least two days in this paradise to recharge.

Make reservations!

Absolutely my best memories of Costa Rica. Owner and staff were incredible. Met loads of very nice people over dinner every night, exchanging stories of what everyone had done and seen that day. Prices were very fair. Clean rooms and swanky little bathrooms. Good dinners. Sustainable howler monkey alarm clocks!

Really can't say enough good things about this place.

Room Tip: Only 2 shared bathroom double twin rooms. Rest are more expensive.
