This house was amazing!!! The views were just gorgeous! Setting up the booking was super easy, and marlon was wonderful in answering all of our questions. The house was perfect for our group of 8 and the showers were awesome after our excursions. Down the road is an awesome set of bars tucked under the jungle. I recommend renting a vehicle, unless you enjoy walking. I would definitely recommend this house to all friends and family!
Our group of ten (2 families of 5, with 6 kids) stayed at Villa Alegria for one week in April. Planning our stay there was easy, as Todd was available to answer all of our questions via email or phone while we were still Stateside. In Costa Rica, Marlon was there to help with any issues we had during our stay. Between the two of them, we felt pretty well covered in terms of ready assistance. Marlon was also able to provide information about the local area if we needed it.
The house was exactly as advertised. The pictures online aren’t doctored at all or taken with a flattering lens. Villa Alegria is a beautiful property, architecturally modern with all of the comforts and amenities any traveler would want or need—with one exception. The house doesn’t have an oven. For our group, this was a non-issue, as we hadn’t planned on baking or cooking anything that required an oven. The stovetop was perfect for us. We even brought in a local chef to cook dinner for us one night, and the lack of an oven didn’t matter at all. There is a toaster oven and a microwave to fill in the gap if needed.
4 large bedrooms, all with an ensuite bathroom, easily accommodated our group. There is an additional guest bathroom for the common areas. Clean design lines, upscale furnishings, minimalist décor—all done well. The beds were very comfortable, with fresh linens and fluffy comforters/pillows. There is air-conditioning in every bedroom, along with standing fans and ceiling fans, so it’s easy to stay cool. We were told by locals that the weather was unseasonably hot during our stay, but at Villa Alegria we were always comfortable. Dish soap, bar soap, liquid soap, bath towels, beach microfiber towels, dish towels—everything was provided for us. Enough flatware and dishes/glasses for everyone, even when we brought in the chef and his meal required extra bowls and serving pieces.
In terms of safety, we never worried—either for ourselves or for our belongings. There is an easy-to-set security alarm for the house and each room had a private safe.
The pool was awesome. Infinity edge dropping right into a beautiful view of the ocean. Taking a quick dip or soaking in the cool water for a while was a wonderful option for sweltering days. Also, there is an outdoor shower, which made rinsing off after a swim easy. The deck area was a great place to hang out, have a drink, play guitar, eat a meal, read. There’s a hammock for extra relaxation and comfortable lounging chairs by the pool. Overhead fans helped when the breeze died down. For added utility, there’s a great wooden dining table on the deck that seats ten comfortably. And all of it faces the Beautiful. Blue. Pacific. Incredible views from anywhere on the deck/balconies and just about anywhere on the ocean side of the house.
Villa Alegria was perfectly located for our purposes. We were 5 minutes from Dominical and Dominical Beach, 5 minutes from Dominicalito Beach, 15-20 minutes from Uvita and only 40 minutes from Quepos and Manuel Antonio. Also, the house sits conveniently on the main road, but 300 meters up a steep driveway, which means you have privacy and hear only the sounds of nature (birdsong, ocean waves, the occasional unidentifiable animal call). We saw iguanas by the pool, many different varieties of birds all around the property and a large dark blob in a tree further up the mountain that one of our group maintains was a sloth.
All in all, we loved our stay at Villa Alegria. There is nothing we would change about it. Coming back to the house after a long day exploring/surfing/hiking was a pleasure. Walk in the door and relax. Jump in the pool. Cool down in the air-conditioning. Watch the sunset from the deck. We would recommend this property to anyone. We ourselves would love to go back and enjoy Villa Alegria again. Pura Vida!
What a great trip! We stayed with a group of 10 adults in Villa Alegria and it was a wonderful experience, plenty of room. The rooms are spacious and the living room/kitchen is open, with a beautiful view of the ocean. But the patio and infinity pool is the real entertaining area—jaw-dropping sunsets and a perfect spot for early morning swims with an occasional Toucan sighting. We walked to the beach (a steep hill, but much needed exercise). At low tide you can explore the coastline and then grab a drink at Roca Verde, an open air beach bar/restaurant, a favorite spot for us. It was off-season, but the main street in Dominical still had some nightlife and some good eats/drinks, I suggest El Pescado Loco if you like fish tacos. We did cook in a few times, markets are close by, with banks right next store if you need it. As for hospitality, both Todd and Marlon were quick to respond to questions and helped us book activities in the area—we went on the boat/snorkeling tour, a highlight of the trip. We went zip lining too, moderate, nothing extreme for those scared of heights. The waterfall was our last stop and didn’t disappoint—30 year-old men looked like children: climbing boulders, jumping into pools, grinning the entire time. We did a lot in the week but couldn’t fit in everything. Much fun still to be had…surfing, ATVs, exploring Manuel Antonio etc. As for security, I felt safe. The house is set back from the road and there are video cameras, locks, a safe for valuables, etc. To really stress the point, someone left their iPhone behind (it was me—I’m a walking disaster, I should wear a fanny pack at all times) and Marlon found it and notified Todd. Together, they figured out the fastest way to ship it back to the U.S. (although I was tempted to fly back to retrieve it just to spend a few more days.) Really great people to rent from. If you’re headed to Dominical, I highly recommend booking this house.
Our group of 8 (6 adults, 2 kids) stayed for a week at beautiful Villa Alegria. The location is absolutely ideal – just a couple of minutes off the main road with views and sounds of the ocean down the hill. The house is nicely laid out so that each couple plus my two daughters had lots of privacy in the bedrooms and bathrooms. The beds are incredibly comfortable, and the fans and A/C keep the rooms very cool.
The pool is large enough to have some fun in, and was wonderful to come home to after busy days. There are iguanas that are regular visitors, and lots of birds hanging out in the trees. It was our second visit to the Dominical area, and this time we took a kayak/SUP mangrove tour, waterfall rappelled, visited Manuel Antonio, and spent three days at Playa Ventanas.
We ate dinner at Jolly Roger’s, PorQueNo?, and Roca Verde, breakfast one day at Café Mono Congo, and lunch one day at Tortilla Flats. All of the restaurants were great. The rest of the time we cooked at the house. If you plan to prepare a lot of your own meals, be aware that there is no oven, only a small toaster oven (not effective for baked potatoes or roasted chicken), but there is a charcoal grill. The homeowner, Todd, is fantastic to work with during booking or if you have any questions that come up before or during your stay. We were very pleased with our rental choice!
