I just got back from my fist trip ever to Costa Rica. I had expected Costa Rica to be more of a third world country, but I was so wrong.

I knew my friends who scanned the internet for accommodation would do a great job picking a nice place. They usually do. But, they outdid themselves. This turned out to baffle me as much as when we stayed at an incredible condo hanging on the cliffs of Thira in Santorini, or when I stayed in a bungalow on Gili Trawangan, a tiny Island between Bali and Lombok years ago.

My friends (there were 5 of us) found Paradise Breezes, an absolutely luxurious Villa complex near Dominical way south of San Jose. To get there we rented a car and drove about 2 hrs on a paved road, winding through the mountains, and another 90 min on gravel (which is supposed to be paved within a year or so they say, but who knows). I am glad we had an SUV; a car with bad struts would not have been comfortable. This road trip was part of the adventure!

The scenery was incredible. The coconut palm plantations we drove through lasted forever. I have never seen anything like it. Swedish forests just do not compare! Wow! Time went fast and we reached the entrance to Paradise Breezes, which seemed to be in the middle of nowhere, just after sunset. The final 1/4 mile road winding up the hill, into the complex of luxury that awaited us off the main road, was paved and lit up in the complete darkness!

We stayed in one of the three absolutely beautifully Villas. No expenses had been spared on building these in the middle of nowhere. I could not believe I was in such a remote area where everything was so over the top! The place was stunning.

Our villa had two master bedrooms, each with a full spa like "bathroom" with a tub and a rain shower (how fitting as the complex is in the middle of the jungle on a hillside overlooking the stunning Pacific Ocean). The wrap around balconies on the two floors of our Villa came in handy not only to enjoy the sunset from, but were also where to enjoy a relaxing massage or a drink in the afternoon.

The main floor had a fully equipped kitchen. We also had a chef come in to cook our first meal. What a treat! In the midst of our dinner the first night it all went black. The electricity failed for a few hours. This reminded us we were in the middle of nowhere, but it just added to the piece and serenity as we now had reasons to light all the candles. We had a true candle lit dinner experience!

There was a dining and living area, and a third bath on the main floor as well. Separate from this main area and accessed from one of the balconies, were two more bedrooms!

Outside we lingered by the infinity edge pool during the day, and soaked in the hot tub under the stars at night! Each of the three villas had a pool and a Jacuzzi. They are all very private, so getting in the water in the buff is a non issue!

Our time in Paradise was too short. Three nights go by way too fast. We spent too little time hiking in the jungle, strolling the beaches and enjoying the small beach communities in the neighboring areas. When I go back next year I will stay longer!

There are restaurants within driving distance - we had a Thai dinner at a place 10 min away one night, and a French one 45 min away another night. Stores for shopping where close by as well. The staff at Paradise Breezes will help you with anything! They are truly service oriented!

If I had been a surfer, this area would be a place to visit. Surf dudes had their tents put up at one remote area of the beach. But, I think, I rather stay in a nice bed with several hundreds of threads of cotton than in an old sleeping bag!

This trip was incredible! It was truly like being in Paradise. Paradise Breezes is the perfect name for this place! And, for now this is probably as close to paradise I want to get!

In January ’08, I had the pleasure to visit Paradise Breezes, and found it to be a beautiful, peaceful and luxurious compound with surprising spectacular Pacific views. Surprising because the pictures do not do justice to the expansiveness of the view and the close proximity of the sea.

I had been to Costa Rica three times before having stayed in private homes and a well-known luxury resort north of Jaco. Paradise Breezes, a compound of three private homes on over ten beautifully maintained acres, is, itself, a luxury resort. This was a short trip for rest and relaxation, so I chose not to hike, or zip, or sightsee, or anything that required much effort. Instead, I fully enjoyed the house, pool, spa and property. My few days consisted of reading and pina coladas by the pool, a jaunt to the beach and into the beachside village for lunches, a late afternoon massage on the terrace, cocktails followed by long, wonderful dinners by the house chef or at a wonderful restaurant owned by a charming woman from Quebec City. It’s a bit of a drive from the house, but well worth the trip…get Rick to give you the name.

The long trip over the mountains on some prehistoric roads adds to the sense that you have truly escaped to a remote, private paradise. The trip can be greatly abbreviated if you select to connect to nearby Quepos. Or, do what we did: prepare yourselves, sedate the kids, and enjoy the adventure—it’s well worth it!

In December I joined several close friends to make my 4th visit to the always exciting and beautiful Costa Rica. This time we chose Domincal and one of the villas at Brisas del Paraiso just a few kilometers from Dominical.
The homes are literally brand new and offer fantastic amenities, wonderful architecture, incredible gardens and landscaping and sweeping views of the magnificent and blue Pacific.
The 2 Master suites upstairs are especially wonderful and well appointed, and the 2 guest bedrooms downstairs are large and very comfortable.
The property mangager, Rick, with the incredible smile and ready willingness to help us with reservations for anything made our visit especially memorable.
He secured a great cook who prepared several exceptional meals, found a great massuer who appear at the house precisely on time, and made reservations to go horseback riding to Cuyenga Falls, a must for everyone no matter your experience with horses.
We all enjoyed the shared moments and opportunity to strengthen our friendships in such an intimate and romantic setting.
