“The Perfect Getaway”
Reviewed January 29, 2012

My wife and I were looking for the perfect place to travel for a special anniversary. We perused many websites for the perfect location but nothing really hit it right until we heard about Shelter from the Storm. The instant we opened the webpage, we knew this was the place for us – and it was! We had a truly wonderful time at Donna and Daryl’s little piece of paradise. Throughout our stay, from our arrival to the day we left, we were warmly welcomed and cared for. The villas were spectacular and extremely clean. The Ranchero was the perfect place to hang out and make new friends. The grounds were extremely well maintained and beautiful. We were sad when the day came that we had to leave our new friends. We look forward to our next trip there. I cannot imagine it having been any better.

Room Tip: Read and review The Shelter from the Storm's website to learn more about their villas.

I found this little piece of paradise from a friend reco. I was not disappointed.
I'm picky- been to loads of places and SFTS blew us away.
Location: you are right between 2 towns that have lots of cool stuff to do and see and buy. The villas are private and it feels like you are in a 5 star resort in the middle of the jungle. You will see monkeys, sloths, lizards and the most wonderful sounding birds.
Facilities: perfect. Clean, new, totally amazing. If you need anything at all- Donna or daryl will get it for you.
Tours- so much to do! We decided to go one day on-on day off and it was the perfect blend of epic and relax.
Cost: 2 weeks of exactly what yeas looking for- for a unbelievably reasonable cost.
Owners: Donna and Daryl are special people who really care about their guests and their happiness. I fell in love with them both and their cute lil animal family.
I can't tell you enough about how this is actually a perfect dreamy place to be. There's nothing I would change.
Cannot wait to go back!

My wife and I have just returned from a 10 day stay with Daryl, Donna, MJ, Boomer and Little Ricky - the nicest family that you could ever want to spend any holiday with.

We were fortunate to be able to stay in the secluded Monkey House, where ceiling fans were more than adequate to keep the apartment cool at night, and where we could spend the early mornings on a lovely balcony with our coffees overlooking the jungle in a fruitless attempt to catch a glimpse of any monkeys (thankfully there were a number of monkey sightings at other locations on the property, so we did get our "fix").

The high-lights:

a) Daryl and Donna themselves - a nicer and more sincere couple cannot be imagined. From the introductory margheritas to the wealth of information and suggestions, they could not have been more accomodating;

b) the Rancho - on those days when we just wanted to "veg", the Rancho (pool/bar area) was the complete answer - comfortable lounge chairs, a refreshing pool, Sky tv entertainment system which provided relaxing music (my favourite station being "French Style"), an honour bar with prices for diet coke below that charged at the supermarket, and, thanks to Brett, another Canadian traveller, a movie system which enabled me to watch the Stieg Larsen Millenium series movies as soon as I finished each book;

c) the sights - Don Lulo's horseback ride to the waterfalls accompanied by a lovely fruit and cornbread breakfast and Tico-style lunch, zip-lining and mini- guided tour at Hacienda Baru, and a day at Manuel Antonio where we hiked through the jungle to the wonderfully sandy beaches catching monkey sightings throughout;

d) the nearby beaches - especially the lovely Playa Ventana with the caves at low-tide;

e) the restaurants - the unbelieveable Exotica with a superbly informal setting and a 5-star menu overseen by the delightful Lucy - a gem in any country; the "surfer bar" Tortilla Flats and San Clemente, both of which provide great short-order menus; and, my personal favourite, Piccola Italian (in Uvita), with unbelieveable pizza and the best pasta this side of Amalfi!; and

f) MJ, Boomer and, best of all, Little Ricky (the 6-month old pup whose sole mission in life seems to be to make life miserable for his older siblings).

In talking with Daryl and Donna, they confided that it was their goal to be able to provide a setting where people can enjoy, in a natural and peaceful setting, the beauties of Costa Rica. When I remarked that, insofar as my wife and I were concerned, he has achieved this goal admirably, Daryl's eyes lit up and with a big smile he said, "Well, that's terrific" - truly, the best memory that my wife and I could have had from our stay!

Room Tip: As most beaches do not have lounge chairs, you may want to take the chairs which Daryl makes availab...

Our family of 6 spent the Christmas holidays & a celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary at Shelter From the Storm and we could not have selected a more perfect place. The property is gorgeous; the views and landscaping are spectacular, and each of the villas are excellently equipted to make the stay comfortable and still exotic. One of the best surprises was the abundant amount of wildlife right there on the property. Donna and Daryl are great. They attend to any and all requests and try to make everyone's stay as easy and comfortable as they can. Our family really appreciated the little extras that Donna and Daryl provide like laundry facilities, honor bar with cold drinks 24/7, wake up calls at 5:45am to make sure you don't miss the monkeys and oodles of recommendations for whatever activity or restaurant you desire complete with detailed directions on how to get there. The nearby beaches are gorgeous. What more can we say .... our stay was perfect.

Room Tip: We stayed in 3 of the 4 villas and the beds were great in all. Also, the villas had air conditionin...

We actually visited Shelter from the Storm in February of 2010, but it still ranks as one of my favorite all-time trips! We stayed in Villa de las Rocas Baja (sorry if I skewed the name) and our friends stayed in the Monkey House. We all experienced breathtaking animal and floral sighting. We had a GORGEOUS view of the ocean and a giant tree which filled with monkeys nearly every morning and night. Donna & Darryl were amazing hosts and have done such a great job creating a beautiful oasis in the trees. Definitely bring flashlights b/c there tend to be some bugs on the sidewalks at night and I hated to step on them. Our room and porch tended to get very hot during the day, but we were normally out and about and there is air-conditioning. Driving up and down the road and driveway was terrifying for me as somebody not very good with a stickshift. The Ranchero was AWESOME and we hung out there every night and even used the bbq a few time. The pool was a welcome refresher as were the hammocks. Darryl does a great job keeping the beer cooler stocked and his prices in the honor bar were better than the grocery store. I saw one of the biggest spiders I have ever seen on the wall, along with a praying mantis and a giant moth, but hey...it's Costa Rica, isn't that what we came here for? Even though the entire grounds are very intimate we never felt like we were being bothered or watched by anyone. Any questions were easily answered by our gracious hosts and we all vowed to return as soon as we are able!

Room Tip: Villa Las Rocas Arriba and Bajas both face the sun. (They are adjoined) sound was never an issue, bu...

We had a terrific time at Shelter From the Storm. We really didn't know what to expect on our first trip to Costa Rica and can't stop thinking about this place. We've traveled a lot to Carribean and Mexico and this place stands out with the most dramatic beauty . Donna and Daryl have built a paradise in the rain forest. The villas are architecturally beautiful with gorgeous native hard wood ceilings amazing views from the outdoor living space. it's also a great location being close to Dominical. Donna and Daryl have great suggestions for activities. They know where to zip line, hike, beach and horseback ride.

we can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: go zip lining and horseback riding to Nauyaca water falls.

Daryl and Donna truly went above and beyond to make our stay an incredible one. Not only did they provide excellent accommodations, but they also enriched every other aspect of our stay with their hospitality and knowledge of the area. It's rare to come across hosts like this, they cared very much that we were enjoying our time in Costa Rica and did whatever they could to help coordinate our daily adventures with the local tour companies. They were very attentive to any need or request that we presented to them, making us feel as though we were family. Upon our arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find a welcome basket with local fruit, coffee, and other items. The villas were clean, quiet, and comfortable. Having breakfast each morning, watching the sunrise and hearing the jungle come to life, all while sitting at our outdoor dining room table was a perfect way to start each day. If you get the chance to have one of Daryl's world-famous margaritas, be sure not to miss it. Winding down in the evenings while sitting next to their open-air bar was a great way to end an adventurous day.

You will not regret booking your vacation in Costa Rica at Shelter From The Storm!!!!
