“We found our Jungle Paradise at this Amazing Cabin”

Our special family Jungle hideaway. We took a bit of a risk by randomly picking a place to stay in Costa Rica on Craig’s List. Boy did we choose the right place! If your idea of exploring Costa Rica is sitting by a pool all week at a posh resort drinking pina coladas, STOP and find another place to stay. However, if you really want to experience Costa Rica and you need a launching pad for your adventures, this is the perfect place for your family (or you and your significant other) to stay.

The Cabin
You are literally staying in your own cabin sitting in the jungle. We stayed in the Las Palmas cabin, but we got a chance to visit several others and they are all setup in a similar way. Las Palmas has a fantastic view of the valley that leads down to Dominical. We always had a great breeze and an unobstructed view of the valley right from our deck. We spent almost every morning sipping Costa Rican coffee and sitting in the rocking chairs on the deck – journaling, reading, and watching the toucans and parakeets fly into our trees. Some mornings, the clouds/fog from the valley did a dramatic burn-off as the sun came up.
The cabin is screened-in, but open air (no glass on the windows). My wife and I slept in the main bed which sits in a screened-in room – it makes you feel like you are sleeping in the jungle and you can hear all the great birds and catch the great breeze. The kids (9 and 13) slept in the loft since it was such a great adventure, but there was also a futon in the main living area – more than enough room for our family of four. A comfortable bathroom with a great shower (yes there is hot water!). The living/dining area was great for playing family games at night.
A special highlight was the “outdoor kitchen” that included a stovetop, nice sized refrigerator, sink, blender, coffee pot, utensils, etc. We were able to make our own smoothies and cooked quite a few of our own meals. We stocked the fridge with plenty of snacks and drinks and loved having the convenience of a kitchen with our cabin. Amazing fresh fruit and veggies (dirt cheap) from a nearby famers market were the highlight of our meals and smoothies. We made sure that if we cooked dinner, we finished before it got too dark and the bugs started swarming the lights. There are definitely some interesting bugs to be found!
All around the cabin you will find great trails and roads that let you explore the property – a highlight for our family was taking a hike to each of the giant Guanacaste trees and checking out all the unique and crazy birds and creatures we encountered. We even took a less utilized trail to a waterfall that allowed us to play Indiana Jones and spend time perfecting our machete swing (the machete made it easy to also cut down a bunch of bananas that grow all over the property – yum!). We even got to see some white faced capuchin monkeys that decided to drop by the cabin for a visit.

The Area
Surfing, swimming, zip lining, waterfall exploring, horseback riding, authentic village exploring, relaxing in the jungle, hot springs soaking, bird watching, reptiling, eating at restaurants, etc. – you name it – it was available nearby. We loved the zip lines at Hacienda Baru (flight of the Toucan) – not because they are physically intense, but because they are very educational. The horseback ride, meals, and waterfall swimming at Nauyaca was a big highlight of our trip. Both of these activities are minutes away. We also took a two day trip to the Corcovado National Park (the information center in Dominical does a great job of arranging trips like this – Richard at the center can arrange just about anything you want to do in Costa Rica). Corcovado is on a lot of bucket lists, is recommended by National Geographic, and doesn’t disappoint. We stayed in an eco lodge type cabin and got to see Tapirs, monkeys, anteaters, peccarys, crocodiles, sharks, and tons of beautiful birds.
We rented a four-wheel drive vehicle which made it easy to explore and to get up the dirt road that takes you to the cabin. Dominical is no more than ten minutes away and a lot of the activities we did took less than ½ hour to get to. Speaking of Dominical, the beach is great and has an awesome break if you like to surf. The rope swing and waterfall in Dominicalito was a nice way to get refreshed and a fun way to swim with and meet locals. If you need transportation, Luke can help you connect with Richard and the Monkey Ride shuttle to/from San Jose – Richard can also arrange a rental car at a price competitive with what we paid for ours in San Jose. The drive to the cabins from San Jose takes about 3 ½ hours if you don’t rush – we took the beach route on the way there and went through the mountains on our way back. The roads were great, but if you go through the mountains, keep in mind that they call it a cloud forest for a reason – budget some extra time in case it is extra cloudy.
San Isidro Del General is about 45 minutes away and has an amazing fruit and veggie market. It is a great traditional Costa Rican village and we enjoyed shopping at the meat market there as well. I believe we spent about 2 dollars and got three or four pineapples. You can also adventure a little beyond San Isidro and hit a hot springs that we spent hours soaking in with the Barrow family!

The People
Luke and Devon and their family were the perfect hosts for our adventure. They were extremely helpful if we needed anything or wanted to drill them for information. They gave us plenty of space and privacy, but were always ready to help us play or explore. They started off as our rental managers, but I have a feeling they are now lifelong friends. They are a special family living in a beautiful place and they are eager to share their experiences with anyone who cares to join them. They are quick to respond to emails, have lots of great ideas, and genuinely love making your stay a wonderful experience.
My family and I have been blessed to travel to a lot of great places in the world – we have yet to find the genuine hospitality that you will find at Las Lagunas anywhere else. Kudos to Luke and Devon for helping us to make our special memories of Costa Rica. Visit their cabins and you won’t be disappointed – and you just might make friends for a lifetime.

“A Simple Paradise Escape”
Reviewed December 6, 2013 for a stay in November 2013

Found this spot on a whim and enjoyed evey minute of my 6 day stay over the Thanksgiving weekend. Simple cabana in the jungle surrounded by beautiful views and friendly people. Luke & Devon are really attuned to making sure thier guests enjoy their stay and experience all that this piece of heaven has to offer. Teaming with life, the property is just remote enough to really get away. Close to town for surfing, waterfall exploring and many, many other excursion adventures. The several cabana options offer a range of experiences from very rustic and simple to vary large and luxe, depenng on your needs and size of group. Great for families and solos like myself. I will be back, no doubt about it.
