“Excellent lunch and amazing Pacific views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2014

We stumbled upon Villas Alturas while driving back from Hacienda Baru near Dominical. Everyone was hungry and we were looking for a good lunch spot - I am so glad we found this place. In addition to having great food, there were ample photo opportunities and an inviting pool that the owners urged us to take advantage of after our meal. We liked the location and ambiance of Villas Alturas so much that I have already decided that if we return to this part of Costa Rica we would like to consider it for accommodations as well.

We traveled with our adult daughters, first destination was Dominical, staying at Villas Alturas. We were first acknowledged by three sweet, sleeping dogs who lazed about during our stay and Marlan, who was in charge as the owners were away in California. Upon arrival, first thing we noticed was the breathtaking view from up there. Our 2-bedroom villa was a nice size, very open and spacious kitchen, dining area and living room--open concept. We enjoyed the pool and front porch so much we were rarely in the villa except to sleep. We stayed in villa right next to pool and reception, our choice since there was no one else there due to June being off-season/wet season. Ever who was in charge each day would leave at 9pm, then it was just us and a security guard. It felt odd at first, but we felt very safe, sat out by pool as late as we wanted looking at the stars each night. During breakfast there was a family of white-faced monkeys (they're early morning creatures) that would come to nearby tree for bananas. We had to drive down the mountain and then down the road a few miles to get to beach in Dominical. The V.A. staff (Jessica) was very nice and accomodating, loaning us beach towels and surfboard, offered chairs as well. If we were to revisit Dominical, this is where we would stay again without hesitation.

I've heard it said that 'when we go to Heaven, we'll each find it to be our own personal image of what we expect.' Well, I truly hope my Heaven looks just like Villas Alturas!

We visited Villas Alturas in May 2014 to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. From the moment Louie picked-up my phone call to thirty minutes later, when he greeted us in person, with a genuine smile and a warm handshake, we felt like we'd connected with an old friend!

Tucked away on a mountainside, this secret gem overlooks the Pacific with a panoramic view like none other! It really DOES feel like PARADISE!

Our 2-bedroom bungalow was spacious and immaculate and boasted all the accommodations we could possibly need and more. To be honest though, my husband and I found it difficult to pull ourselves away from the large, covered porch with big leather backed rockers, dining table & chairs, 2 wooden banana leaf ceiling fans and a hammock that seemed to continually beckon! The peaceful feeling instantly overtook my husband and me, almost mesmerizing us, as we enjoyed the cool breezes and listened to the birds and monkeys only feet away in the lush jungle surroundings!

Every morning, we eagerly awoke to step out onto our private front porch, take in the majestic view and breathe in the fresh morning air, before the dew had even begun to dry on the foliage! (I am not an early riser, but I didn't want to miss a second of my time in Paradise!) And it was such a treat to simply walk over to the outdoor dining area near the pool and find a piping hot pot of Costa Rican coffee waiting to welcome us and a kitchen staff who'd already been busy for hours getting ready to prepare breakfast for the guests.

Every inch of Villas Alturas is well-maintained, beautifully landscaped and designed to please while also offering privacy to the guests. Even the staffers seem hand-picked for their warmth and charm, since they perfectly compliment this little piece of paradise! Every person we met, from Louie, the property manager; to Tom, the friendly American owner; to Jessica (who seemed eager to pitch-in and do anything necessary); to the wonderful chef and even Grace, the 'singing housekeeper,' seemed to truly enjoy their jobs and their very LIVES. Their gracious hospitality and authentic friendliness were infectious and served to add a terrific 'one-on-one' dimension to our visit that made us feel more like old friends!

Costa Ricans, in general, seemed to always take the time to speak, mingle and be friendly & helpful, as if nothing were more important than our brief encounter or quick conversation. At Villas Alturas, it was exactly the same, but we had more time to get to know the awesome staff that makes their guests feel as welcome as their own family members!

Louie is the 'go-to guy' who knows everything about the area and he spent a good deal of time making phone calls to arrange a private fishing charter for us. After a full-day on the ocean, we returned to Villas Alturas with our catch and Louie, himself, prepared us the most amazing tuna sushi appetizer with our fish; and the chef and Louie, together, created a one-of-a-kind tuna dinner, complete with sides and salad, followed by a decadent dessert that topped-off our perfect day! After a week in Panama, we can honestly say that THIS meal was the BEST we ate!

It's a fact that people may forget what others SAY; and they may forget what others DO, but people NEVER forget how they were made to FEEL. The wonderful feelings we got at Villas Alturas will stay with us for a lifetime! (But, rest assured, we're planning to go back a few times too, because that peaceful hammock and the majestic Pacific sunsets still beckon to us!)

Room Tip: Ask for Bungalow #1 as a first choice and then #3 as a second choice. The views are unbelievable! BU...

We rented a two bedroom villa with a very nice view of the pacific for the weekend to go diving at Cano island. The staff are very friendly (and so are the lovely dogs) and helpful. They prepared breakfast the night before so we could eat something before leaving for our diving trip early the next morning. The villa was very spacious and had a large balcony. To get there is an easy climb up the hill if you have a 4-wheel drive. The pool area and restaurant offer amazing views of drake bay and the pacific and help the traveller relax the moment they arrive.

You won't regret booking this property.

Room Tip: There is a two bedroom villa adjacent to the pool that probably has the best view. We stayed in nr 7...

Visited Vilas Alturas over Easter in 2014 and was impressed with the staff, the great food and the cleanliness of the resort. The views from my Villa (Villa #3) were incredible! The hosts, Tom and Evette made sure that my stay was comfortable. On Easter, the staff was off, so Tom took to the kitchen to make a pork tenderloin dish that was to die for. While the beaches can be quite hot and humid this time of year, the elevation of the resort is ~1200 ft so the air temp for sleeping and laying out was quite comfortable. There is air conditioning, but it was not needed at night due to the high elevations and the ocean breeze.

Room Tip: Villa #3 faces the ocean and has beautiful views

I cannot possibly think of a better way to describe our experience at Villas Alturas than "tranquil." And while I'm not precisely sure what the definition of pure vida is, I think Villas Alturas is pure vida.

I am not big on relaxing. But this was a rare experience for me because I felt calm and content at this resort, enjoying the moment. In most instances the magnitude of the experience is recognized after the fact. Here, I was contemporaneously aware of the magical memory that was being made.

The pool deck is superb. From the restaurant sitting area, looking out upon the pool and deck, it felt to me as if I was sitting on an ocean liner and peering out toward the ocean over the bow of the ship. The bamboo fence spokes appeared to be a ship's rail.

We stayed in Villa #3. Although I only viewed the other villas from the outside, I believe that #3 is the crown jewel. It is situated just in front of, and below the pool deck. All units have decks, but this one was particularly amazing. It was also the most comfortable lodging we had during our stay, which was nice considering we stayed here for our final two nights.

We did have a four by four, and therefore had no trouble navigating the steep, dirt road up to
Villas Alturas. It is an interesting journey in and of itself. As an aside, we rented a vehicle through Vamos 4X4 and were very glad that we did. I had heard stories about driving being particularly difficult in Costa Rica. I did not find that to be true at all especially away from the San Jose area. Still, Costa Rica drivers are quite tame compared to New Yorkers/

Finally, Villas Alturas was listed as the second most popular property in the area, after Costa Paraiso. That seemed hard to believe. What could be better. Well, we had a nice dinner at that property's "Por Que No" restaurant. It is located on a magnificent rocky beach (not what we are used to in Ft. Lauderdale). Hated the parking lot at Costa Paraiso as it was quite an adventure maneuvering. From my perspective, Costa Paraiso has a rugged beauty in a somewhat congested sense. If you want to be steps from the beach, that's your answer, but you would be giving up the tranquility of Villas Alturas. For me, Villas Alturas is a no brainer as far as where to stay.

Room Tip: # 3 for location

Thank you so much for your review and kind comments. We are grateful that you planned your stay at Villas Alturas. We continue to do upgrades and improvements to give our guest the best experience possible. We will be re-grading the road in June so for all you with 2 wheel drive come on up and enjoy the view while sipping on a margarita for the afternoon, overnight or stay as long as you like.
We hope to see you again when in the area and thank you for taking the time to write your kind review.

We stayed at the Villas Alturas based on a recommendation from my father-in-law who stayed here twice in the past. The hotel is under new ownership since he stayed there, but there were just as awesome if not better than we anticipated from what we knew of the previous owners. The views are breathtaking... I can't imagine there's anything better in the area.
We had our own private villa with two bedrooms, kitchen, living, dining, bathroom.
The staff was so helpful and nice from drink/food service, recommending stuff in the area and even letting us borrow body boards to take to the ocean.
They were doing some improvements in the front which look like they will be gorgeous additions to the already beautiful place.
If we go back to this area we will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: All the rooms are private but I think villa 1 had the best view!
