“Tranquil”
Reviewed May 15, 2014

I cannot possibly think of a better way to describe our experience at Villas Alturas than "tranquil." And while I'm not precisely sure what the definition of pure vida is, I think Villas Alturas is pure vida.

I am not big on relaxing. But this was a rare experience for me because I felt calm and content at this resort, enjoying the moment. In most instances the magnitude of the experience is recognized after the fact. Here, I was contemporaneously aware of the magical memory that was being made.

The pool deck is superb. From the restaurant sitting area, looking out upon the pool and deck, it felt to me as if I was sitting on an ocean liner and peering out toward the ocean over the bow of the ship. The bamboo fence spokes appeared to be a ship's rail.

We stayed in Villa #3. Although I only viewed the other villas from the outside, I believe that #3 is the crown jewel. It is situated just in front of, and below the pool deck. All units have decks, but this one was particularly amazing. It was also the most comfortable lodging we had during our stay, which was nice considering we stayed here for our final two nights.

We did have a four by four, and therefore had no trouble navigating the steep, dirt road up to
Villas Alturas. It is an interesting journey in and of itself. As an aside, we rented a vehicle through Vamos 4X4 and were very glad that we did. I had heard stories about driving being particularly difficult in Costa Rica. I did not find that to be true at all especially away from the San Jose area. Still, Costa Rica drivers are quite tame compared to New Yorkers/

Finally, Villas Alturas was listed as the second most popular property in the area, after Costa Paraiso. That seemed hard to believe. What could be better. Well, we had a nice dinner at that property's "Por Que No" restaurant. It is located on a magnificent rocky beach (not what we are used to in Ft. Lauderdale). Hated the parking lot at Costa Paraiso as it was quite an adventure maneuvering. From my perspective, Costa Paraiso has a rugged beauty in a somewhat congested sense. If you want to be steps from the beach, that's your answer, but you would be giving up the tranquility of Villas Alturas. For me, Villas Alturas is a no brainer as far as where to stay.

Thank you so much for your review and kind comments. We are grateful that you planned your stay at Villas Alturas. We continue to do upgrades and improvements to give our guest the best experience possible. We will be re-grading the road in June so for all you with 2 wheel drive come on up and enjoy the view while sipping on a margarita for the afternoon, overnight or stay as long as you like.
We hope to see you again when in the area and thank you for taking the time to write your kind review.
Best regards,

We stayed at the Villas Alturas based on a recommendation from my father-in-law who stayed here twice in the past. The hotel is under new ownership since he stayed there, but there were just as awesome if not better than we anticipated from what we knew of the previous owners. The views are breathtaking... I can't imagine there's anything better in the area.
We had our own private villa with two bedrooms, kitchen, living, dining, bathroom.
The staff was so helpful and nice from drink/food service, recommending stuff in the area and even letting us borrow body boards to take to the ocean.
They were doing some improvements in the front which look like they will be gorgeous additions to the already beautiful place.
If we go back to this area we will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: All the rooms are private but I think villa 1 had the best view!

Just spent one week at Villas Alturas and it was amazing! Everything about the resort is spectacular - the views, the grounds and especially the people. Tom and Ivette, the owners, are so friendly and hospitable; we felt like we were staying with friends! And their staff is wonderful - Marlin, Jessica and Louie went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The pool area is gorgeous and you could just stay there all day, but if you choose to go to the beach, they give you beach chairs and towels. The closest beach is Playa Hermosa, which is a short drive. The views from the front deck of our villa were nothing short of spectacular. The villa itself was spotlessly clean and fully equipped. We have stayed at other resorts in Dominical and nothing can compare to this. We cannot wait to return! Love, love, love it there!

This was our 2nd time back to Villas Alturas and enjoyed it just as much this time as last time, maybe even more. The lunches and dinners we had there were absolutely fantastic. The monkeys in the trees and all the different birds in the sky are a spectacular sight to see. All the Villas have everything you would need being up on the hill side in the jungle with breath taking views of the ocean bellow. The staff is great and can't wait to come back soon.

NIcely located, just a short car ride to the beautiful Pacific beaches in the area. (10 minutes to closest) The villas have every comfort you need. Best thing about these villas is the outrageously beautiful views from the common pool/ dining area. Food was adequate. Breakfasts a little weak but not much different then most places in CR. You have to like eggs!
We did not have a room booked in advance and the owner was very accommodating by giving us an available 2 bedroom villa for the price of a 1 bedroom! Glad we stayed!

I don't think it's possible to explain just how wonderful this place is in just this small box!!! Greatest views of the area, nicest staff, yummiest food, beautiful pool, and delicious fresh fruit drinks. We were greeted with a fresh coconut, and from then on the service was flawless. The owners Tom and Ivette are extremely helpful and caring and never hesitated to go out of their way to make sure that we were happy. They are both extremely motivated and dedicated owners, and are constantly making upgrades/improvements to make everyone's stay that much better. The pool is located perfectly, overlooking the beautiful jungle and ocean. We got to meet some monkeys and iguanas right on the front porch of our villa!! They had live music one night and I was in awe at what a supportive and fun community that we were surrounded by. You must come visit, you'll never have another trip like it IN YOUR LIFE! Thank you infinitely Tom and Ivette for your gracious hosting, we will be back sooner than you know!! Pura vida

Domincal is a nice little town along the Pacific side of Costa Rica. This stretch of the coast where the Jungle meets the ocean boasts incredible views , pristine beaches and authentic Costa Rican lifestyles. Nestled in the hill overlooking the Pacific , with 180 degree views of the coastline is Villa Alturas. I have to take my hat off to the owners of this Boutique Hotel. They have done a great job with this property , and I know have poured their heart and soul into this place and it shows! With incredible views , incredible food and with a staff that just goes out of their way to make your stay as relaxing as possible you are sure to have a hard time leaving. I highly recommend a visit if you have not done so , you won't be dissapointed!

Room Tip: All the roms come with an incredible view , situated to have privacy.
