This place is so beautiful and more than expected. Daryl is so helpful. Anything we needed he was on it right away. John and Mary, thank you for sharing this beautiful home. We will never forget our time here. Only thing missing was Tarzan. There is never a need to leave this place. We only ate off property a total of 4 meals. They were great but it is hard to walk away from here. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a true vacation.
There is a good reason that Flying Toucans has nothing but 5 star reviews. The house is beautiful. Everything you would need for a great vacation is already on the property. The views are spectacular with different types of wildlife showing up throughout the day.
Do a little research online of things you might want to do in the area but don't book anything. Daryl knows everything and will take care of it for you. Having someone so knowledgeable available is great because it removes the opportunity for "rookie mistakes" if you are new to the area. Every suggestion was perfect. I recommend renting a car because there is just so much to do. 4 wheel drive not completely necessary but advised. Some things worth seeing are off the beaten path.
We like to rent homes with a nice view and Flying Toucans just set the bar impossibly high. A big thank you to John & Mary for creating such a magical space in a magical country. We'll be back!
Flying Toucans is a comfortable and meticulously maintained home on an amazing piece of property. My husband, two adult children and I spent Christmas in Costa Rica. We wanted a private, quiet, relaxing vacation where we could spend quality time together in a home that offered all we needed so we did not feel compelled to fill our days with outings. Flying Toucans certainly delivered. The view is not only the best we have ever found, but it was all ours. We did not have to share the view, the pool, the grounds with anyone, which is exactly what we wanted. We did drag ourselves away to go to the farmer's market one day to stock up on fruits and veg, and to go ziplining at nearby Hacienda Baru and out to Exotica for dinner twice. Other than that, we stayed put and were content to do so. The best place to view the amazing wildlife in Costa Rica was right from the beautiful infinity pool overlooking the Pacific. There is a feeder for papaya and bananas and we enjoyed visits from capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans, coatis, and lots of other bird species. The home itself is well appointed and the quality of the home, the wood throughout and all the finishes were first class and well thought out. This may not be important to every vacation goer, but it certainly is to me. The home is maintained in a way that rivals my own and upon our arrival, was spotless (again...incredibly important to me). The owners were accommodating, helpful, responsive, and overall just nice folks to deal with in the planning phase. After arrival, there was no need to contact them because everything was as promised and better than expected. There is a manager who will help with anything needed, tips on where to go, advice on restaurants, outings, markets, etc. This was incredibly helpful and important, as we only had a limited number of days and did not want to make any mistakes. We can't wait to go back!
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Flying Toucans and couldn't have picked a better place. The pool was perfect, the view was perfect, the bed was firm and super comfortable, the sights and sounds of the wildlife and ocean were breathtaking. We had everything we needed there and barely left.
Oh my word! Flying Toucans is spectacular. You know how people always say that a view "took their breath away"? Well - we travel A LOT and I've never had that experience until the Flying Toucans. We are not big on just sitting and we are always on the go, but not at the Flying Toucans. Not only was the view spectacular but there was so much active wildlife on the property that we were entertained numerous times throughout the day - everyday! We can not wait to go back and can't imagine staying anywhere else in Costa Rica.
It was breathtaking from the moment we walked through the gate. What an exceptional property and view! Darryl was very helpful and we had a terrific time at the villa, in the pool, watching for wildlife and enjoying our own cooking on nights off.
My wife and two teenage sons had the pleasure of a Costa Rican holiday over Christmas this winter, and we wanted to shout from the rooftops about the home we stayed in.
Flying Toucans is a gem, hidden behind an older hotel, at the peak of some foothills along the west coast of Costa Rica. It was so nice to easily locate the hotel entrance, and drive right through their parking lot to the secluded private drive into the lush, landscaped point where Flying Toucans laid waiting for us, overlooking the “whale’s tale” of Uvita: Bahia Ballena.
The layout of the property is just ideal: A wide-open ground-level floor plan, with doors really only for the powder room and the laundry room. Everything else designed to be part of the beautiful view, not at odds with it: Open plantation shutters, ceiling fans, outdoor furniture, comfortably appointed for being part of the natural environment, and showcasing the infinity pool and it’s lens to the beach and jutting foothills surrounding. We brought our Bluetooth speaker, and listened while reading, relaxing, eating, enjoying cocktails, playing games, and of course floating in the pool. Sounds that were foreign to an East Coast U.S. resident were met with curious looks, perked ears, and copious use of binoculars and cameras.
Waking up in the morning before 6:00AM was not at all difficult, when presented with sunrise over the bay is breathtaking, and can be enjoyed from the hammock on the patio outside the master bedroom suite.
Having a “bird”-feeder mounted over the small deck on the left provided ample opportunity to bring the wildlife to the doorstep, as we observed over a dozen species of birds come by, along with the occasional Monkey and Lemur.
The kitchen had everything we needed - EVERYTHING - for eating in, saving leftovers if we ate out, cleaning, washing, preparing, grilling and cooking. From a coffeemaker with coffee, cream & sweetener to matches and coal for the grill, it was all there. Full laundry facilities, and a powder room on the first floor. Separate locked entrance to the 2nd floor with really spacious bedrooms, glorious stone showers, oversized bathrooms, remote-controlled air-conditioners, a hammock on the expansive 2nd floor patio, and a closet with books and games, for those occasional afternoon rainshowers.
We were so happy there. We couldn’t think of a better gift to ourselves than to wallow in high-80s temperatures, listening, watching, and exploring the beauty of Central America. Highly recommended!
- From the very beginning contact with John and Mary – our experience was extremely positive. John and Mary are responsive and accommodating. They know the area of Dominical well and they share relevant information easily. The document they shared with us once we booked Flying Toucans was invaluable because it not only gives detailed directions on how to find FT (in a land with no addresses), but they also share excellent information on traveling to Costa Rica and what to expect.
- The property – is AMAZING! Flying Toucans is a beautiful, secluded property. The house is very well maintained, and extremely well-stocked: kitchen tools to extra trash bags, it’s all there. You will also find all of the supplies you will need to live comfortably – toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, hand soap, bath soap. You’ll be able to focus on the beauty around you, not on boring details and shopping to stock the place during your stay.
- The pool simply enhances the view, reflecting even MORE of the abundant view into your smiling eyes, if you even have the capacity to take it all in. That it’s fresh, clear water lacking any nasty chlorine makes it lovely to be in all day long.
The wildlife is pure Costa Rica: Plan to stop during your days out to stock up on fresh fruit to chop up for the feeder, and sit back and watch the show!
- Sunrise and sunset are times where you want to be at the house. Plan your day around them, as the house provides perfect vantage points for both. You barely have to move to have your next visual postcards delivered on a platter.
- Daryl and Donna are just a phone call away, and they’ve even left a cell phone there for you to use when you need to contact them. Nothing like a local help line when you need it.
- Leaving – so sad – wish we were still there!
