Owner description: Boothill Graveyard was the Tombstone City Cemetery from 1878 to 1884. It was not called Boothill until the 1920s. Its occupants ran the spectrum of all the cultures and nationalities of early Tombstone. Cowboys who "died with their boots on" lie next to housewives, business men and women, miners, gamblers, ladies of the "red-light district" and all the famous and not so famous occupants that contributed to Tombstone's early history. By the 1920s, Boothill had fallen into ruin with many grave markers lost or unreadable. A group of citizens in Tombstone and Cochise County began the task of researching old burial records, consulting with relatives, older residents, and using all means available to identify the occupants and mark the graves properly. The task took several years and the efforts of many to accomplish. This resulted in the graveyard being restored much as it was in the early years when it was the city cemetery.

Small grave yard with several interesting sites and tombstones for history buffs. Recommended if one is in the area, since it doesn't take long to stop and see it.

Makes you think of how tough life was in those days.
Its not touristy, its a sobering, and interesting experience. Real people, real lives, real deaths.
A must see location.

Dusty, dessicated and definately has the appearance of an old west cemetery (except for the tombstone puns on the dead).

With all the hype in movies and such about boot hill my expectations were fairly high. Unfortunately very few of the graves have much noteworthyness. There were a few with interesting rhymes and a handful of infamous gunfighter fame and still a couple more of the better known "shady" ladies of the town. I expected to see more interpretive information here and there. The lack of this may be due to a level of respect for the genuine grave site. At least there was no charge for this attraction and as a result did not mind too much that this turned out to be a disappointment.

This is a beautiful and well-kept site, and the stories of those buried here are fascinating. Includes those killed at the shootout at OK Corral and John Heath as well as humbler residents.
