On this particular trip I was a solo traveller (young male) flying into PHX with no car rental. Didn't want to stay downtown as i've done it to death - thought i'd try Tempe for something different. This proved to be a convenient choice as the light rail makes the area very accessible and the stop (Dorsey and Apache) is only 3 blocks from this hotel.
Tempe's demographic is predominantly of young college kids, and as such there is a vibrant bar and restaurant environment along Mill Ave 7 nights a week. It's about a 20 minute walk to Mill Ave, which for me was fine, but I wouldn't recommend it for those who have difficulty walking long distances or those with children. A cab fare is only around $6.
As far as the hotel itself goes, the staff were friendly and hospitable and two in particular (the pool player, forget his name, and Jim) were always up for a good chat. The room is your standard, garden variety Super 8 room, with the usual furnishings and fittings. They are simple and reasonably clean, cost effective accommodation for the traveller who likes to spend more time out of their room that in it.
The hotel does have a pool and spa area which was nice. No laundry facilities on premises, however there is a coin op laundry in the complex opposite the Dorsey/ Apache light rail stop.
As far as things to do while in the area, I enjoyed the desert botanical gardens (about a $15 cab fare each way), Old Town Scottsdale (30 minute bus fare from the transit station at the Northern end of Mill Ave), and the Big Bang duelling piano bar in the middle of Mill Ave.
