I've been going to Ted's since I moved to Arizona 16 years ago. I typically go there for lunch 3-4 times a month. They cook all of their dogs / burgers over Lump Charcoal. Everything is cooked to order so nothing is sitting under a heat lamp. The only negative being the wait can be long. Especailly during the lunch hour. Between 11:15-Noon the wait can be up to 30 minutes. However it is well worth the wait.

I also love their homemade onion rings. They are made fresh daily and prepared when you order them. So you always get fresh hot rings. My favorite is to dip them in Ted's homemade hot sauce. If you haven't tried it get an order of hot sauce on the side and dip your rings in it. The hot sauce is sweet with a subtle hint of heat. Its to die for!

I had read the reviews on Ted's before a trip out to the Phoenix area which peaked my curiosity about this place. I decided why not visit Ted's for an early, Tuesday lunch.

Pulling up to Ted's gets your mind racing about how good can this place truly be. The building itself looks like a 60s Denny's restaurant model that is dressed up like a Circus Burger in the windows. Not the most appealing from the outside, but let's not judge the food by that. I walked inside to find orders being taken over a hot, charcoal grill. Upon placing my order, they place the meat onto the grill and allow the sizzle to take place. The grill is so hot you do not have to wait too long to get your food.

Menu: Not overly complicated. Hot Dogs, Brats, Sausages, Fries, Onion Straws, Milk Shakes, and Drinks.

The Wait and Customization: The wait is not terribly long and they make a good effort to customize your dogs the way you like it.

The Food: I ordered a Sausage Dog, regular Hot Dog with Chili, Onion Straws, and a Drink. The charbroiled hot dog was your standard hot dog on a grill. Nothing to earth-shattering about it. The chili was decent, but not great. Ted's provides the customer with a variety of hot dog toppings. I decided to keep it simple. The sausage dog was quite good and provided me with a hint of spice. Ted's claims they freshly make their onion straws and it appears they were right. The coating on the onion straws is flour with no seasoning. Taste was lacking a little in the onion straws. I appreciate the freshness of the onion straws but a little seasoning would be nice. I did not get their fries but they come right out of a commercial bag.

Service: Service was curtious at the counter. Not overly happy but not rude either.

Cleanliness: Restaurant was decently clean. The interior is aged quite a bit and could use an update.

Overall Thoughts: By the time I finished my early lunch, there was a line 10 deep to place an order. I found Ted's to be good but not overwhelming great like some have suggested. I agree, charcoal does make the food taste better. Ted's does hold a uniqueness in the fact that uses charcoal to cook their food other than a flat top or boiling method of cooking. Ted's would be a good place for a lunch stopover if you are in the area, but I would not go out of my way for it in future visits.

For those of you that grew up with Ted's Hotdogs in the Buffalo, NY area and miss it, there is one other location to visit in Tempe, AZ. It was so nice to be able to bite down on one of the greatest Polish style hot dogs again while visiting in the Phoenix area. All the pictures on the wall of the Buffalo restaurant locations brought back good memories. They even had the Buffalo Evening News to read while you ate. And having loganberry 'pop' again was great. Be sure to get the onion rings which are only done in this style by Ted's.
