My husband and I recently biked Towards the Algarve (guided) as part of our honeymoon in Portugal. We had an amazing time and can't say enough good things about José, Cristina, Ricardo and Portugal Bike. From the moment we were picked up in Lisbon to the last day when we were dropped off at the airport, we literally did not have to think about a single detail. José and Cristina's meticulous attention to detail and their focus on the needs and enjoyment of each cyclist was always apparent.

Each day's ride consisted of beautiful scenery, both coastal and inland, as well as Jose's fun and interesting "lesson" stops covering a myriad of topics such as the history of a small village, insights into cork tree farms and harvest, or the source of the amazing scents that filled the air (like Cistus ladanifer and eucalyptus). We all loved the picnic snack and lunch stops "catered" by Cristina which always included delicious local, fresh fruits, veggies, baked breads and sweet treats as well as Portuguese olive oil and incredible cheeses. After arriving at a small town or village each afternoon, we had time to explore the area and/or relax by the pool before heading out for a dinner of authentic Portuguese food at a lively, local restaurant. The accommodations were all great, our favorite being the B&B Monte Joao Roupeiro in Aljezur. Magical!

If you are considering experiencing Portugal by bike, I highly recommend doing it with Portugal Bike.

We did the Charming Pousadas in Alentejo Self-Guided. Everything was great, as shown in other reviews, except you must rely entirely on a GPS they give you, with very poor "overview" maps. Their idea of an overview map is a green line on a small piece of paper, with the town names written in such small print and so faintly that you can't see them, and the green line hides the route numbers. Really useless! Our GPS did not work as well as expected (e.g., sometimes it went to setup mode when you went over a bump). We spent an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out how to get in and out of towns, for example, because the signs were confusing and the GPS was not always working as expected. From our perspective, it is absolutely essential to have detailed back-up maps and directions. We didn't even have "overview" maps for part of the ride because they forgot to add two tour days. And on the last day, the GPS sent us to the wrong hotel.

Our contact at Portugal Bike basically didn't listen to us and attributed it all to operator error. But that simply was not the case. So if you decide to do any of their self-guided tours, I would strongly suggest bringing your own detailed maps. We have done many self-guided cycling tours in Europe and elsewhere, and we have never been given such poor guidance.

Thank you for your review. We appreciate that you enjoyed the bicycle tour.
The maps that we give to our clients are not to be followed. We tell that during the briefing before the tour starts. They are not accurate enough. They only serve to give you an idea of what you are going to do on that day, ...not to be followed. The map is exactly what you see on the GPS device, and on the device you can zoom out or zoom in the map with the bike track, so that you can see all the details that you need (as much as 5 meters of magnifier): you cannot feel lost, even in the towns! The map is shown with an extreme precision, much better than in a wrinkled piece of paper or in a map damaged by the rain and you also don't need make a stop everytime you need to check your way.
We have organized bicycle tours since 1995, and since 1999 we have used a GPS device on our bike tours. In 2006 we started to offer self-guided bicycle tours with a GPS device to our clients, and since that time we have made more than 1000 daily tours guided by a GPS. People love it and after the first day with it, they don’t want anything else but being guided by a GPS. The device is very user friendly and even those people, that have never used a GPS device before, love it! We use the last model of Garmin, the Edge model, that is being used by millions of cyclists in the world, even on the Tour de France, or mountain bike tours where there are many bumping trails!
We try to develop a Sustainable Tourism and to save the Planet: supposing that you need at least 5 sheets of paper per day tour, imagine the amount of printed paper (+5000 pages) that goes to the trash and the impact of this on the Planet.
Times are changing and the 21st century is already here. Technology improves and offers us cleaner and better solutions and we need to adapt our behavior for these days and the future, ...if we want to keep the beautiful environment and the good quality of places to ride a bicycle in the world.

We had a fabulous time touring the eastern border of Portugal with Portugal Bike. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and shared great information about the region we toured. We'd use the company again and highly recommend them to others considering a visit to Portugal by bike!

Did a "self guided" tour with Portugal Bike the beginning of February (2017)We have done several "self guided" trips through Europe and this was, without a doubt, the best. Right from the get go we could tell this was going to be a special trip and we were not disappointed. The bikes, the GPS maps, the lodging, the route...EVERYTHING was top notch. They even picked us up in Lisbon and drove us 3 hrs to the beginning of the Algarve Coast and brought us back after the trip.

Fantastic trip! Everythng was first class, from the hotels, dinners, bookings, and attention to detail by Jose, Christina, and Ricardo. The bikes were top of the line, and the routes taken offered spectacular scenery and interesting cities, towns and villages. I've done other bike trips and this was up there with the best of the best.
