Windemere Hotel & Conference Center
Ranked #9 of 23 Hotels in Sierra Vista
Reviewed September 29, 2009

Had to stay here recently during a conference. Wifi was iffy at best until if crashed on Wednesday. That can happen at the best of resorts not just poorly maintained older properties, so it might be excusable. When there was no hot water on Thursday morning, I checked out for the Holiday Inn Express. While the HIE is above the Govt Per Diem rate, it worth the extra cost.

We had dinner at the hotel's Maestro Restaurant, and it was one of the worst experiences on our trip through Arizona.
The service was slow and poor, just to give you an idea, let me tell you that the waitress had to get pen and paper to write down our two glasses of wine and an appetizer. The appetizer (Crab-stuffed mushrooms) had no taste at all to it, and our dinner entrees (Paella and Vegetable Paella) were just bland and had nothing in common with Mediterranean cuisine.
The staff of the Blue Oyster bar within the hotel was inattentive and the drinks mediocre.
The hotel is described as 'newly renovated'. However, we prayed that the elevator would make it to the 2nd floor and we wouldn't get stuck in it.... The carpets in the hallway had a funny smell to them, and our room smelled like someone had just lit a cinnamon candle. The room was pretty clean and spacious. However, we will certainly not come back to this hotel.

Writing a review of the Windemere Hotel and Convention Center in Sierra Vista offers a challenge of monumental proportions. There are many, many “pluses” but almost as many negatives. To paraphrase the old nursery rhyme, “when it is good, it is very, very good, but when it is bad, it is horrid.”

My wife and I spent six nights at the Windemere early in August 2008. Our king-sized bedroom was pleasant and the bed quite comfortable. On the other hand, there was no separate easy chair or recliner in the room despite there being plenty of room for one. That meant to watch TV in the evening, one stretched out on the bed or, rather uncomfortably, pulled the lone, small desk chair over to the corner directly in front of the air conditioner in order to be able to see the screen. There was a nice but somewhat crowded bathroom with a quite adequate counter for cosmetics and the like. There was, however, virtually no free countertop space in the bedroom that wasn’t covered by television, microwave, or some other “necessity.” This literally required putting one of our two suitcases on the floor and living out of it for nearly a week.

The Windemere has, within the past year or so, been, at least on paper, completely re-decorated. In some cases, this has resulted in a nicely appointed look but in far too many others, the hotel has done little more than paint over already chipped walls and it shows. Framed posters have apparently been pulled off the elevator walls but the many holes never filled in. The hotel has tried to cut corners wherever it could. One perfect example can be found in the two available luggage carts the hotel has for its customers’ use. Both are old, small, and cheap. Add to that the fact that they are hidden from view far from the front desk and nearly impossible to find.

The complimentary breakfast at the hotel was quite filling. Every morning, it consisted of both hot and cold items and a number of different juices for those interested in such things. The fresh strawberry yogurt was excellent as was the regular fruit bowl. Real china plates, silverware, glassware and the like are nice touches. The management, however, does not seem to know exactly what it wants its breakfast to be. Though on one morning, it was situated in the Windemere’s nice and upscale restaurant, the other days, a breakfast buffet was laid out in the adjoining bar, replete with numerous signs touting one or another kind of beer to drink, hardly an appealing venue to start the day. The young staff tried to make each morning as pleasant as possible but all too often, one of another food item would run out and be replaced only after numerous requests. There were several kinds of tea but no hot water unless a special request was made for it each day. Indeed, getting water for tea each day was one of the biggest challenges we faced every morning--though the greenish-looking and utterly inedible scrambled eggs offered one day did little to inspire confidence in the cook.

The most frustrating thing about the Windemere was the front desk personnel. With one exception, the young lady who checked us out in a friendly and efficient manner, none of the others seemed to care whether we were there or not. When we arrived, hot and tired after a long day or driving, the young man apparently responsible for checking us in, was engaged in a long phone conversation. He made no attempt to hurry nor did any of the three others behind the desk move a finger to get us in and on our way to our room. When he finally did deign to wait on us, it was to assign us a second-floor room even through we had specifically requested on the phone a first floor one. We had been promised one then but when we arrived several months later, the staff failed to honor its promise. The hotel’s two elevators are literally hidden hundreds of feet from the lobby and when we tried to figure out how to find one so we could get our luggage taken upstairs, the desk clerk’s only response was to hand us a map of the hotel with the closest elevator circled and point “that a’ way.” Not once did he volunteer the fact that if we moved our car to the far end of the building and came in from that side, we would be within easy walking distance of an elevator. Instead, he stood by while we struggled to push our loaded luggage cart through the lobby and down two long hallways trying to find a way upstairs. After we finally did get checked in, we realized that, as noted above, we would, without a chair, need extra pillows for the bed. We personally requested them before heading off for dinner. Two hours later, we returned; no pillows and it was necessary to head back to the desk once again. The hotel touts that it has free USA Today newspapers. When one day there were none, the young persons working at the front desk could only say, in essence, “tough.” No apology and no “people skills” at all. (Surprisingly, on the other hand, the cleaning crew and maintenance personnel were always pleasant, outgoing, and a joy to see every day. Perhaps the hotel ought to consider switching the two groups if they wish to improve customer relations).

Like nearly every hotel/motel in Sierra Vista, the Windemere exists on the basis of the military personnel from nearby Fort Huachucha who, because of the United States government’s refusal to house its visiting personnel on base, must stay in town. Having such a captive audience has, perhaps, caused the hotel management to tend to ignore so many of the “little things” one expects from the a fine hotel, something the Windemere claims to be. We may return to Sierra Vista again but if we do, it won’t be to stay there. There are simply too many other first-rate choices in town to accept anything but perfection.

Windemere was recommended by a local friend since we booked at Quality Inn they said to change immediately and go with Windemere. Windemere was the same price so we went with it and was happy we did. The rooms were nice and parking was easy access. The breakfast was really nice and it was a buffet and it changed daily. There was two things I would say they could improve. The cleaning people seemed to be quick to ask if you need anything, hoping you wouldn't need there service. Also the swimming pool had very little circulation and with the trees nearby caused alot of debris in the pool to include bugs. As a pool owner, I inspect all the pools away from home and this one was not up to standard. They did have people cleaning it the next morning but the pool is in a bad spot. They also provide cocktails for guest if you need a night cap. Very nice stay and would recommend.

The Windemere is really a good bargain when you look at total value. I stayed here April 9-20 while on official TDY at Ft. Huachuca. This was my third two week visit to Sierra Vista in a year. This is the first time I stayed at Windemere. The staff was friendly and curteous. The sleeping room was clean and equipped with all necessary amenities. The furniture could have been of a little better quality. The laundry facilities were in good working condition. The carpeting in the hallways needed replacing. The room included full american breakfast each morning in the restaurant in addition to three free cocktails each evening in the lounge. For me as a single person, on business with no kids this is the best bargain in town. There is a full service restaurant on the premises. The food was of excellent quality and I observed restaurant customers who were not staying at the hotel There is no equal in town when it comes to convenience. After reading the previous reviews I was afraid to stay here. I only ended up here beacuse this time around all the other places were booked solid. I was pleasantly surprised. Things have really changed. Don't pay attention to old outdated reviews. I prefer the Windemere to the other places I've stayed in Sierra Vista. The Windemere is definitely worth considering.

The pros: Good rate, convenient location, near mall, shops, restaurants, quick drive to the base. Access to a work out facility, nice pool and jacuzzi, full breakfast buffet, free drink coupons that can be used in the bar or restaurant, shrimp bisque was terrific. Wireless internet in the room, fridge, microwave, hairdryer, iron. Cons: Rooms could use an uplift, old furniture and a bit dreary, hallway could use a facelift as well. Dinner service at restaurant was extremely slow and made mistakes on the order. Additionally, on a previous night when I ordered Oysters Rockefeller in the bar it took 30 minutes. Even with the negatives I would most likely stay here again.

Never a problem with this hotel. We have stayed here at least 6 times. Front desk is very nice, and they even give you a couple free drink coupons for their lounge. They are also pet friendly, and the beds are comfy. We have always been treated well here. It's quiet and allows for a good nights rest. In contrast to Sierra Suites which treated us VERY poorly. This will always be our choice for SV! We have family here and stay at least 2-8 times per year. We also have a very small dog, a min pin he is only 8lbs. We have no issues AT ALL when we bring our dog, which is very frequently given we live in Phoenix. It's easier to bring him for a one nights stay. This place is at the top of my list for Hotels in Sierra Vista, AZ!!!
