“nice people, site still recovering from fire, floods”
Reviewed March 19, 2012

We spent a couple of hours there on Thursday last week. The creek is dry because the water is being diverted to Tombstone, Arizona. The orchard was largely burned by the big fire last year, and the general hummingbird count is down markedly. There are a few Chiricahua Leopard Frogs in the pond and we did get to see a Phoebe. The Beatty's are really nice people making the best of a difficult situation. They should be supported as much as possible during this time, but if you are hoping to see a lot of birds, you might want to wait until the area recovers.

“Beatty's Miller Canyon Apiary & Orchard”

Definitely worth the long drive from Tucson to visit and enjoy this rural area, especially when the hummingbirds are there.

“Wonderful, but check before you go - 2011 fires caused huge damage”
Reviewed January 11, 2012

Visited in May 2011, but have never stayed there - only day visits to Hummingbird feeders and then hikes up Miller Canyon to see Spotted Owls and other rarities.
Besides lodging, big draw is the hummingbird feeder area that you can visit for $5. The feeder area is tremendous! Tom has hung almost 2 dozen hummingbird feeders in a quiet shady area. There are stadium bleachers to sit on that are covered from the sun. You sit very close to the feeders and the hummingbirds don't mind at all. Sierra Vista is the Hummingbird Capital of the US - migrants from Mexico come up so it has more species than anywhere else in the US.
In addition, the property sits at the start of Miller Canyon trail - which follows a stream up to known habitat for Spotted Owls. Saw one while I was there - ask Tom the proprieter if they've been seen lately. You can also see other rarities like Red-faced Warbler and Bridled Titmouse on the trail.

Now for the bad news, the summer 2011 fires hit Miller Canyon very hard, and when the summer rains hit the deforested canyon, mud slides wiped out much of the canyon and the Beatty property. They've been working hard to dig out and rebuild, and has said the hummingbird garden was not affected. Be sure to contact them or check the web site prior to going to get a recent status.

“wonderful-can't say how wonderful”
Reviewed March 8, 2010

We have stayed 4 times, in each type of lodging, the old caretaker cabin, the new cabins on the hill with compostible toilets and the "house" with 2 levels. Each is charming, not sophisticated, but oh so comfortable and accommodating. They think of the little touches in the kitchen like plastic wrap and a cooler for day use. But the real beauty is the birds and nature. Unbelievably spectacular. Can't wait to get back
