“HA did a lot to save this little church”

Star of the Sea Painted Church
Reviewed November 6, 2013

The church is on the left side of the road in a clear area, not easily missed. The are a couple out buildings (storage?) and a portipotty. There is a lock box for donations, please make one. They also have some crafts to purchase with a larger donation (monitored by God). A group of Japanese came thru while we were there. No one left a Yen, and the driver never pointed out the tip can. Shame on tours.

this sight will not be the highlight of your visit to the big island, but is indeed part of its history, especially associated with the complete demise of a town to the lava flow.

I know that this is listed in the guidebooks as a place to see, but it is not spectacular or really special. If you have time, it is a nice local spot to see on the way to or on the return from the City of Refuge (which is spectacular).

Not sure this church is always open. I did it with a guide trip to the black sand beach and lava watch with this as a stop on the way. We had a barbeque dinner at the church. There are paintings on all the walls and ceiling. The Father painted this during the leprosy era of Hawaii. If you can get to it I recommend it. A guide can explain the history. Donation requested.

This church is beautiful and old with lots of history on those walls. Hard to find but a sweet stop if you do. Not too far from an incredible scenic drive along the coast.

We were staying in the area so we passed by the church right on Rt 130(near mile marker 19 and 20) a number of times with the intention of stopping before we left. One our last day we stopped in and it is really a neat little church. The painting on the walls is wonderful which tell the history of Farther Damien and the leprosy colony on Molokai. Reading about some of the history is very interesting. The church had to be moved be moved a few times to save it from the advancing lava flows that flowed over the town Kalapana. If you are traveling to see the Puna area this church is a must see. You will not spend hours there but there is something special about it when you walk inside because it is small and nicely painted but somehow also sometime very simple and basic which make it special.
