Be advised that you must call ahead to set an appointment for Palatki. The long road up to the ruins is rough and treacherous and although we made it in a Ford Fusion, I wouldn't recommend you try it. Upon arrival we were the only visitors. The lady at the visitor center radioed up to her colleague at the site that we were on the trail up to see him. The docent was expecting us and it was real nice that we had our own private tour of the ruins.

It rained later that evening and did not stop raining for the next 2 days until it was time for us to leave Sedona. Were it not for the brief hours of good weather at Palatki, my wife's birthday weekend would have been a complete bust.

We wanted to see petroglyphs but found out that the V-V was only open F-M and it was Tuesday! Someone told us about Palatki. To get there we drove down a long bumpy dirt road - but our rental car did just fine. No entrance fee because we had our national park pass. The volunteer docents were fantastic. They knew their history and had great people skills. The hike to the ruins involves climbing some rocks - I would not recommend it for anyone who was not steady on their feet. Great place for pictures of the rocks, ruins and petroglyphs.

This was a very worthwhile stop on our Sedona vacation. I would highly recommend stopping here if you are going to be in the area!!

First, the tours are given at specific times and they close early in the day. So check it out. Next there are two ways in, both unpaved roads, but one way worse than the other. So check it out.
There are two tours, both were great. One is the dwelling ruins, very interesting and you get quite close to the actual ruins. The other is the pictographs and drawings, also interesting. Worth the effort to get there, if you plan ahead.

We did and never made it. We had a reservation (yes you have to have one) for the first tour, but we never made it as we made the mistake of taking Boynton Pass Road. Unless you do not care about your car, DO NOT take this road. It is basically pile of fist size rocks. Sad what passes for a dirt road in AZ. After covering less then 1/4 mile in over 5 min, we gave up and unfortunately had no time to go the preferred way that is FR525.

So do not make the same mistake as we did and AVOID Boynton Pass Road and use FR525 to get to Palatki.
