In the Hillsides shops area on SR 179, Javelina Cantina is one of Mark Shugrue’s successful Arizona restaurants. The Cantina has been serving house-made traditional Mexican food in Sedona for many years. The food’s consistent quality keeps locals, part-timers, and tourists coming in. The menu includes fajitias, carne asada, tacos, tostadas, quesadillas with chicken, beef, or fish and shellfish choices. Our super steak burrito came with beans, rice, guacamole and crème fraiche. The meat was tender and plentiful. The slow-cooked shredded beef machaca chimichaunga was served enchilada-style (green sauce for this diner) and came with beans, rice, guacamole and crème fraiche. The sauce was light; the beef was well-seasoned. Both burros were stuffed with the meats. And, huge! These Cantina specials were just under $15 each. The Cantina prides itself on its salsa and margaritas and rightfully so. Again, the servings are large. The restaurant offers special deals Monday-Thursday (e.g., Taco Tuesdays) and happy hour is daily from 3-6 pm. Yes, these tourists will return.

Having dutifully researched Sedona restaurants in Trip Advisor, we were anxious to try #1 rated Elote Café and figured that if we were there right at opening time (5 pm), we would be able to get in without much of a wait. How naïve we were! The line already snaked well down the open air porch when we arrived, and after standing in line for 20 minutes with very little movement, we were asking ourselves "how good can Mexican food be to demand this kind of wait?" Since we were still on east coast time, tired and hungry, we bailed out of the line for the nearby Javelina Café. It sits on the side of a hill in the Hillside area and has nice views of nearby red rocks. This turned out to be its main claim to fame, however. The salsa was bland and not to my taste, our standard choices of enchiladas didn't match up well to the chain Mexican restaurant we eat at home, and the bill was twice what you would expect to pay for Mexican. The one redeeming feature of the menu was the local Oak Creek Canyon Nutty Brown Ale! But alas, that was not enough to rescue what was an average, overpriced meal.

Chips and salsa were excellent. The food was good, not great. The service was just terrible. They repeatedly served us the wrong dishes. The server would set a plate in front of us and be wisk it away 10 seconds later. They never brought the appetizer And they completely forgot our drink order. They served us a dessert we didn't order. It was so bad, I felt like I was on a hidden camera show to see how much we could take.

The statues out front of the kids on roller blades may entice you in, but the margaritas will have you ordering more chips! Try the cheese dip and the Fiesta Margarita for a great sweet and salty combo. Had a large group, but was accommodated nicely. Check out the javelina statues too.

We were very happy to find the outside patio deserted, even though the inside seating was almost full. There had been rain off and on during the afternoon and early evening, and I guess we were the only ones crazy enough to chance an outside table. We sat beside the fountain, with the Sedona landscape looking gorgeous in the setting sun. We gambled, and won, It was awesome! The food was pretty great too, and you should definitely believe the people commenting about the large portion sizes. I finished mine, but my friend could only managed about half -- we probably shouldn't have ordered the guac appetizer. Keep that in mind in you go. Doggy bags are fine when you're at home, aren't a realistic option when you're on vacation.
